Opis:
The dependence of bilinear and biquadratic interlayer coupling on the thickness of magnetic films is analysed for a trilayer structure with specular reflection at the outer surfaces. It is shown that the oscillation periods corresponding to the case where the thickness of one of the two magnetic films is constant, while that of the second one is varied, can be different from the oscillation periods in the case where the thicknesses of both magnetic films vary simultaneously. The nonoscillatory component of the coupling parameter is shown to be weakly dependent on the thickness of the magnetic films.

Mixed-metal complex consisting of ruthenium(II,III) pivalate, ([Ru₂(piv)₄]⁺) (Hpiv = pivalic acid), tetraethylammonium and octacyanidotungstate(V) ions, (Et₄N)[{Ru₂(piv)₄}₂W(CN)₈]·4H₂O, was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared and UV-vis spectra and temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibilities (2-300 K). The magnetic susceptibilities, zero-field-cooled and field-cooled magnetizations, and AC susceptibility data showed that the present complex is ferrimagnetic with T_{c} value of 80 K. The field dependence of magnetization exhibited a hysteresis with a coercive field of 17000 Oe at 5 K.

We report the discovery of new effect in La$\text{}_{1}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{3}$ Nd$\text{}_{1}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{3}$ Ca$\text{}_{1}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{3}$ MnO$\text{}_{3}$ - the jump of magnetization induced by external electric field E (2.5-4)V/cm at a given magnetic field H (18-25) kOe at T=4.2 K. This effect is large when compared with a metamagnetic transition induced by the magnetic field in many substances. The origin of the magnetization jump induced by external electric field has not yet been explained. We assume that this transition is induced by the hopping of E-excited e$\text{}_{g}$ electrons and that this is a source of a jumpwise increase in magnetization in the non-collinear magnetic phase within the perovskite. This effect can be attributed to a strong coupling between carriers induced by the electric field (the conduction electrons e$\text{}_{g}$), and the local magnetic moments (t$\text{}_{2g}$-localized spins) through a mechanism of the Zener double exchange.

The role of double-exchange, a non-Heisenberg spin-spin interaction between the magnetic ions of identical chemical nature but different charge states, in the mixed-valency diluted magnetic semiconductors is discussed. The mechanism correlates the spins of magnetic ions by virtual hopping of a d-electron from one ion to the other via the p-band states. We calculate the energy spectrum for pairs of magnetic ions within the charged ionic clusters stabilized by the charge-charge correlations, taking into account simultaneously both the double and the superexchange. The ferromagnetic, non-Heisenberg double exchange might compete with the Heisenberg-like, ferrimagnetic superexchange, thus resulting in canted alignments of ionic spins.

Magnetic, transport and structural properties of bulk crystals of Sn$\text{}_{1-x}$Gd$\text{}_{x}$Te with Gd content 0.002 < x < 0.09 and varying carrier concentrations obtained by an isothermal annealing were studied in the temperature range T = 1.5 - 80 K. We found the effect of resonant increase in antiferromagnetic spin-spin exchange interactions in the crystals with 0.025 ≤ x ≤ 0.05. No effect was found in crystals either with higher (x > 0.05) or with lower (x < 0.025) Gd concentration. The observed Gd composition dependence of the magnetic and transport properties of SnGdTe can be explained in a proposed model relating these experimental properties to the Gd composition induced shift of the position of Gd$\text{}^{3+}\text{}^{/}\text{}^{2+}$ level with respect to the top of the valence band of SnGdTe.

The effect of disorder in magnetic layers, in the spacer, and at interfaces between them on periods, amplitudes, and phases of oscillations of interlayer exchange coupling in magnetic multilayers is studied theoretically on the ab initio level. We employ the spin-polarized surface Green function technique within the tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method and the Lloyd formulation of the interlayer exchange coupling. The coherent potential approximation is used to describe the effect of alloying. The calculations are significantly simplified by employing the vertex-cancellation theorem. Numerical results illustrating the effect of various kinds of disorder in the system on the properties of the interlayer exchange coupling are presented.

Magnetic properties of IV-VI semimagnetic (diluted magnetic) semiconductors with Mn or with Gd can be controlled by changing the electronic parameters such as carrier concentration, Fermi level position or density of states at the Fermi level. The examples of these effects are the carrier concentration induced paramagnet-ferromagnet and ferromagnet-spin glass transitions in PbSnMnTe and the Fermi level position controlled Gd-Gd exchange interactions in SnGdTe.

Antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling in semiconductor EuS-PbS-EuS ferromagnetic trilayers grown on PbS (001) substrates with ultrathin (0.6-1.2 nm) nonmagnetic PbS spacers is studied by SQUID magnetometry and model calculations. Analysis of the experimentally observed magnetic field and temperature dependence of the magnetization of EuS-PbS structures reveals a rapid decrease in the interlayer coupling energy with increasing temperature indicating a temperature dependence of the microscopic coupling mechanism acting in these all-semiconductor ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic multilayers.

The stiffness constant of the stationary spin excitation is calculated employing density functional theory and the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau energy functional in a site form. The exchange parameter of the magnetic functional is estimated within the framework of the nearest neighbours intermolecular interaction and the energy gain of non-magnetic state per atom. The stiffness constant of Fe, Co, and Ni metals is found based on the energies of spin polarization calculated numerically in the local spin density approximation by Moruzzi et al. as well as by Kübler. The calculated stiffness constants are compared with other theoretical calculations and experimental data.

Opis:
Optical magnons should occur in magnets containing two in-equivalent magnetic species only. However, Heisenberg interactions between in-equivalent magnetic atoms can be expected to be weak. This is because free exchange of electrons between chemically different magnetic atoms appears not generally possible. To the best of our knowledge optical magnons have never been identified unambiguously experimentally. Confusion is provided by the fact that two magnon branches commonly occur in antiferromagnets with ferromagnetically ordered crystallographic planes and opposite spin orientations from plane to plane. This applies to MnO, EuTe, CoCl₂, Fe₂O₃, K₂FeF₄. Associated with the ferromagnetic planes is a particular low-energy magnon branch. The high-energy magnon branch is the antiferromagnetic branch and not an optical magnon. In Fe₃O₄ (magnetite), weak interactions between the Fe²⁺ moments and the Fe³⁺ moments are evidenced by the fact that the order parameters of the FeO and of the Fe₂O₃ subsystem have different temperature dependencies. The observed two magnon branches can be attributed to the Fe₂O₃ and to the FeO subsystem, respectively. This applies equally to the two observed magnon branches in mixed crystals such as Rb₂Mn_{0.5}Ni_{0.5}F₄, KCo_{0.71}Mn_{0.29}F₃ or Mn_{0.3}Co_{0.7}F₂ that can be understood as modified dispersions of the constituent materials.

We report a relatively large exchange bias effect observed for the first time in Ni-Mn-Sn thin films with different microstructure and composition: a $Ni_{50}Mn_{36}Sn_{14}$ epitaxial film (A), a $Ni_{50}Mn_{43}Sn_7$ film which is phase decomposed (B), and a $NiMn//Ni_{50}Mn_{25}Sn_{25}$ bilayer (C). Despite the samples differ markedly in both microstructure and composition $H_{EB}$ does not substantially differs at 5 K. Exchange bias decreases with increasing T approximately as $H_{EB}$ (T) ∝ $H_{EB}$ (5K)/T with $H_{EB}$ (5K) of 180 Oe and 60 Oe for sample B and C, respectively and almost linearly for sample A with $H_{EB}$ (5K) = 65 Oe. Blocking temperature where the exchange bias vanishes is 40, 50 and 80 K for sample A, C and B, respectively. The results suggest that the role of AFM/FM interfaces is not substantial in formation of exchange bias in Ni-Mn-Sn Heusler alloy films and exchange bias is rather related to AFM/FM interactions in nanoscale.

Temperature and magnetic field dependence of magnetization of EuS-SrS multilayers grown epitaxially on KCl (001) substrate is experimentally studied by superconducting magnetometry technique. In these lattice-matched semiconductor heterostructures EuS layers are ferromagnetic quantum wells whereas SrS layers are nonmagnetic spacer barriers. The multilayers composed of EuS layers with thickness 3.5-5 nm and SrS layers (thickness 0.5-10 nm) exhibit ferromagnetic transition at 17 K. In the multilayers with ultrathin SrS spacers (0.5-1 nm) a nonmonotonic temperature dependence of magnetization as well as a characteristic switching in magnetic hysteresis loops is observed. These experimental findings are explained considering antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling between ferromagnetic EuS layers via nonmagnetic SrS spacers. The strength of this coupling is determined based on model magnetization calculations.

Magnetic and structural properties of EuS-SrS semiconductor multilayers were studied by SQUID and magneto-optical Kerr effect magnetometry techniques and by X-ray diffraction method. The multilayers composed of monocrystalline, lattice matched ferromagnetic EuS layers (thickness 35-50Å) and nonmagnetic SrS spacer layers (thickness 45-100Å) were grown epitaxially on KCl (001) substrates with PbS buffer layer. Ferromagnetic transition in EuS-SrS multilayers was found at the Curie temperature T$\text{}_{c}$=17 K. The multilayers exhibit only weak in-plane magnetic anisotropy with [110] easy magnetization axis. Coercive field of EuS-SrS multilayers shows a linear increase with decreasing temperature. Magneto-optical mapping of magnetic hysteresis loops of the multilayers revealed good spatial homogeneity of their magnetic properties.
