Opis:
Several techniques were used to investigate the chemical and phase composition of four trial batches of nitinol powder produced by calciothermic reduction as well as their morphology and granulometric composition. Almost all powders produced by a similar procedure contained an allowable amount of impurities and were practically free of minor detrimental phases such as Ti₂Ni and Ni₃Ti. The powders under study have gamma or lognormal particle size distributions and spongy particles morphology typical of this production method. The tap density over 3g/cm³ was achieved at least in one case, which gives us an opportunity to successfully produce bulk articles by subsequent treatments such as sintering or hot isostatic pressing.

Opis:
Micro-composite materials based on $MgH_{2}$ with the addition of a relevant amount of $LaNi_{5}$ have been synthesized by reactive ball milling. The powder microstructure has been studied by a combination of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, while the decomposition behaviour and the hydrogen release properties have been obtained by differential thermal analysis and thermo-gravimetric measurements. Both temperature scans and constant temperature isotherms have been used to this purpose. Experimental results allow identifying optimum processing condition for synthesis of material that shows the onset of hydrogen release at temperatures as low as 450 K. The decomposition kinetics has been studied by isothermal measurements which show that the whole process cannot be described by just one mechanism limiting the reaction velocity. In fact in the first decomposition step the reaction is kinetically limited by the second phase nucleation, while, for partially decomposed samples the bulk diffusion appears to limit the process. On the basis of the experimental results we propose a mechanism of phase transformation where a percolating network of the two phases is formed.

Opis:
YVO₄ phosphors with different morphologies were synthesized by trisodium citrate (Na₃cit) surfactant-assisted hydrothermal process. Effects of molar ratio of $\text{cit}^{3-}$ to $Y^{3+}$ and pH value of reaction solution were intensively investigated on the morphologies, structures and luminescence properties of YVO₄ phosphor. The morphologies of the YVO₄ particles can be effectively controlled in strong acidic and strong alkaline environment by affecting the adsorption of $\text{cit}^{3-}$ on the (001) crystal plane of YVO₄. Strong acidic condition resulted into excessive adsorption of $\text{cit}^{3-}$ groups on the YVO₄ phosphor, which annihilated the superior luminescence of YVO₄ phosphors. On the contrary, strong alkaline condition does not result into the adsorption of $\text{cit}^{3-}$ groups. The synthesized YVO₄ phosphor without adsorption of $\text{cit}^{3-}$ groups showed superior luminescence even though the effective control of the morphology in alkaline condition is not so good as in strong acidic condition.

Opis:
The perovskite lithium lanthanum titanate shows high ionic conductivity at room temperature. Doping the lithium lanthanum titanate by niobium preserves the perovskite structure, which is synthesized by ceramic technology at high temperature (1300°C). The X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy results show that the samples exhibit single phase. AC impedance measurements indicate total conductivity of about $8.93 \times 10^{-4}$ S/cm for composition of x = 0.05 at room temperature. The Raman spectra and cyclic voltammetry results of the compound are also reported.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of biomass ashes - specifically wood biomass ash - on the surface of austenitic stainless steel 309 and 310. The process was carried out for 1000 h at 650°C. The microstructure and chemical composition of corrosion products were examined by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis. Phase analysis of corrosion product were done by X-ray diffraction and ash composition was investigated by X-ray fluorescence. It was observed that wood biomass ash caused the corrosion of the steel surface. On the surface of the steels exposed to wood biomass ash the layer of corrosion products was observed, mostly chromium, nickel and iron oxide. The thickness of mill scale formed during the process was in the range of h=15-30 μm.

Ni-Cr-Mo alloys, e.g. Inconel 625 and 686, exhibit high-temperature corrosion, oxidation and wear resistance. For this reason, these alloys are typically used as a coating material in different environments as effective solid-state diffusion barriers between the corrosive atmosphere and the base metal. To perform: the Ni-base weld overlays, without introducing too much Fe, a new welding technique called cold metal transfer was used. High-temperature corrosion of boiler parts during incineration of waste was investigated. Boiler tubes were coated with Inconel 625 and Inconel 686 nickel alloys and, after subjecting them to waste incineration ashes, they were examined by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer to reveal different corrosion mechanisms and their causes. Results indicate a strong dependence of the boiler steel corrosion on anions in the incineration waste ash. X-ray diffraction characteristics of the scale showed that surface corrosion processes induce the formation of CrO₂, NiO. The presence of iron in the clad weld surface is conductive to the formation of the Fe₂O₃ oxide.

Opis:
The effects of iron additions on the structure of (Cu_{0.47}Ti_{0.34}Zr_{0.11}Ni_{0.08})_{100-x}Fe_{x} (x=0, 1.5, 3, 6) glass forming system are presented. The alloys were synthesized by arc melting of high purity elements and melt spun to form: rapidly quenched ribbons. X-ray diffraction studies showed the amorphous structure of the base and Fe-containing alloys, confirmed by the presence of exothermic peaks on differential scanning calorimetry curves. Bulk samples in the form of rods (Φ3×55 mm) were cast using a suction casting unit attached to the arc melter. Structural investigations revealed partial crystallization of the base Cu₄₇Ti₃₄Zr₁₁Ni₈ alloy. Iron additions significantly decreased the glass forming ability of the alloy, leading to primary crystallization of dendrites.

X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and hardness measurements were applied as experimental methods to investigate the structure and properties of the crystalline-amorphous Al-based composites prepared by mechanical alloying and subsequent high pressure high temperature compaction of the powders. It was possible to obtain bulk, fully dense crystalline-amorphous composites and the applied compaction technique allowed preservation of amorphous structure in the composite. Addition of amorphous $Al_{60}Nb_{40}$ phase to AA6061 alloy resulted in significant increase of hardness of the composite (120 HV), comparing to pure Al alloy compacted at the same conditions (75 HV).

Opis:
TiH₂ content, mixing, pressing, different mold filling rate as the factors which affect foaming process on the powder metallurgical route were investigated. TiH₂ was added in the amount of 0.5-1-1.5-2 wt% to adjust the proper amount. Differential scanning calorimetry tests were conducted on the TiH₂ powders in order to obtain optimum hydrogen releasing condition. Aluminum and TiH₂ powders were blended with the different speed-time combination. The mix was compacted at different pressures with the aim of explaining of the oxide layer deformation. An acceptance-rejection criterion was developed and used in pore analysis. Also, the using of a borosilicate glass molding technique are completely original and a new approach.

Due to fact that Cu-based alloys are very sensitive to the thermal treatments, in scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction observations, according to the different quenching techniques Cu-26.04%Zn-4.01%Al alloys can display different product phases such as martensite and precipitation. Rapidly cooling sample was formed as M18R structure from the ordered $DO_3$ phase and in the monoclinic case, β=89.1° determined for sample. It was seen that a α-precipitation (fcc) phase in the matrix is slowly cooling.

Opis:
GaMnSb/GaSb(100) layers with embedded MnSb inclusions have been grown at 720 K using MBE technique. This paper presents the investigation of the defect structure of $Ga_{1-x}Mn_{x}Sb$ layers with different content of manganese (up to x = 0.07). X-ray diffraction method using conventional and synchrotron radiation was applied. Dimensions and shapes of inclusions were detected by scanning electron microscopy. Depth profiles of elements were measured using secondary ion mass spectroscopy technique.

The object of the present paper is the study of mechanical properties and microstructural evolution of AX41 magnesium alloy, severely deformed using a combination of hot extrusion and equal channel angular pressing. Equal channel angular pressing processing was performed at 250°C following route Bc. Mechanical properties of the ultrafine-grained alloy were investigated in tension at a constant strain rate of $10^{-4} s^{-1}$ at room temperature and 100°C. The dislocation density was determined by X-ray line profiles analysis. Microstructural observations performed by electron backscattering diffraction after 8 passes of equal channel angular pressing revealed very fine and homogeneous microstructure with a grain size of 0.3-6 μm. It has been found that the room temperature mechanical properties such as yield stress and tensile strength reach their maximum value even after the first pass which is in good agreement with the evolution of the dislocation density. Further processing by equal channel angular pressing led to the decrease in both the yield strength and the dislocation density, despite the slight grain size refinement.

In the present study the effect of mechanical alloying parameters on phase formation in $Al_{62}Cu_{25.5}Fe_{12.5}$ (at.%) alloy was investigated. Mixtures of Al, Cu and Fe powder with different particles size were ball milled in Fritsch 5 Pulverisette planetary mill using tungsten carbide vials and balls. The milling was performed with the rotation speed 250 and 300 rpm up to 40 h. Stearic acid or hexane were used as process control agent (PCA). The microstructure of the powders prepared with different milling parameters was investigated using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that increase of the rotation speed as well as decrease of particle size of initial Al powder particles accelerates the formation of homogeneous microstructure of the powder. The mixture of icosahedral quasicrystal and β-Al(Cu, Fe) cubic phase has been obtained for the powders milled at 300 rpm up to 20 h. Prolonged milling time results in transformation to single ordered β phase.

Opis:
Magnetoelectric multiferroics are materials which exhibit both magnetic order and ferroelectricity in the same phase. Multiferroic materials, where ferroelectricity and magnetism coexist, were extensively studied. This class of materials offers a large application potential for new devices due to the two coupled degrees of freedom based on the local off-centered distortion and the electron spin. The studied $Bi_5Ti_3FeO_{15}$ ceramics was prepared by conventional synthesis and hot uniaxial pressing reaction applying the conventional mixture of $TiO_2$, $Fe_2O_3$ and $Bi_2O_3$ oxides as precursor materials. The present work focuses on the structure analysis of multiferroic $Bi_5Ti_3FeO_{15}$ ceramics performed by X-ray diffraction method, scanning electron microscopy and the Mössbauer spectroscopy methods.

The effect of gamma radiation in the range of 0-1409 MGy on the structure of a new mineral additive to cement based composites was investigated in the perspective of employing them as radioactive waste protection material. According to the authors knowledge, it is the first paper dealing with observations of the cement matrix, both pure and modified, treated with so giant radiation dose. The absorption of gamma radiation modifies the morphology of the additive grains, causes decomposition of cement hydrates and clinker relicts in cement paste containing the additive at twice higher radiation dose than that inducing the decomposition of the reference pure cement paste and the cement paste containing pozzolane additives.
