Titanium dioxide $(TiO_2)$ thin films having different thicknesses of 220, 260, and 300 nm were deposited onto well-cleaned n-type silicon substrates by reactive DC magnetron sputtering and annealed in the range of 200-1000C in steps of 200°C. The effects of thermal annealing and thickness variation on the crystalline quality and surface morphology of the films were investigated by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy measurements. It was found that the film quality and morphology depend on the annealing temperature. $TiO_2$ films exhibit a grain-like surface morphology. The root-mean-square roughness and grain size on the surface increase as a result of increasing film thickness.

Magnesium and its alloys are interesting materials for biodegradable implant applications. Magnesium alloys have very good strength properties, they are lightweight, but their main disadvantage is a low corrosion resistance in the physiological environment. Various modifications of a Mg alloys surface by deposition of different coatings are used to prevent untimely dissolution. The article presents the investigation results of a thin ZnO coating deposited on a MgCa2Zn1Gd3 alloy by means of the magnetron sputtering method. The studies include: scanning electron microscope observation of the ZnO surface, X-ray phase analysis, surface roughness measurement in atomic force microscopy, the microhardness test and potentiodynamic corrosion resistance test in the Ringer solution at 37°C. It was found that the ZnO coating is compact and continuous. It increases the hardness of the MgCa2Zn1Gd3 alloy and also improves its corrosion resistance. The corrosion potential is shifted slightly towards the positive values from -1.52 V to -1.50 V for the alloy with the ZnO coating.

NbN and Nb-Si-N films were deposited by magnetron sputtering the Nb and Si targets on silicon wafers at various bias voltages, Uₛ. The deposited films were annealed to establish their thermal stability. The films were investigated by atomic force microscope, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and nanoindentation. The NbN films were nanostructured, and the Nb-Si-N films had a nanocomposite structure, and represented an aggregation of δ-NbNₓ nanocrystallites embedded into the amorphous Si₃N₄ tissue (nc-δ-NbNₓ/a-Si₃N₄).

In this study, molybdenum (Mo) thin films have been deposited on Si substrate by dc magnetron sputtering. Then for preparation of $MoO_3$ thin films the thermal oxidation of Mo thin films under the oxygen flow was employed in the electrical furnace. The influence of the different thermal oxidation temperatures at 400, 600, 800 and 1000C on the structural and morphological properties of $MoO_3$ thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy, respectively. The results show that the crystallinity and surface morphology of the films are strongly dependent on the thermal oxidation temperatures.

Opis:
ZnO (0001) layers on sapphire (0001) substrates were fabricated by means of high temperature high vacuum magnetron sputtering. The layers were deposited onto a thin MgO buffer and a low temperature ZnO nucleation layer, which is a technology commonly used in MBE ZnO growth. This paper reports on using this technology in the sputtering regime.

Series of Al₂O₃(0001)/Pt/(Fe/Pt)ₙ/Pt multilayers with variable number of bilayers n and thicknesses of individual layers were grown using molecular beam epitaxy to investigate influence of buffer layer structure, number of bilayers, and individual layer thickness on their structural and magnetic properties. Both columnar and monocrystalline 10 nm Pt (111) buffer layers were used in the experiment. Structure of Pt buffer layer determined the roughness of Fe/Pt interfaces and consequently magnetic properties of the multilayers. When multilayers were deposited on columnar Pt buffer layer, we observed increase of Fe/Pt interfaces roughness with increasing number of bilayers to values exceeding the nominal Fe/Pt bilayer thickness in the upper part of the sample volume, which resulted in the increment of coercivity in the sample with n=15 determined from hysteresis loops measured for perpendicular orientation of magnetic field. When Fe/Pt multilayers were deposited on monocrystalline Pt buffer layer, Fe/Pt interfaces were smooth regardless the number of bilayers. All samples, despite of the quality of buffer layer, number of bilayers, and individual layer thickness revealed easy magnetisation axis oriented in the sample plane.
