It is shown that the wave function of the photon is a very useful concept with interesting ramifications. It plays a major role in bridging the gap between classical theory of electromagnetism and quantum electrodynamics. The photon wave function can also be used to construct a phase-space distribution for the photon (Wigner function) that describes the transport of radiation.

Modification of the spontaneous emission of dye molecules embedded in artificial opals exhibiting stop bands in the visible range is observed. Molecules embedded in artificial opals show dips in spontaneous emission spectra and modified fluorescence decay kinetics. Results are interpreted in terms of redistribution of the photon density of states. Effects of the multiple reabsorption and reemission of fluorescence photons and interaction of dye molecules with the silica surface are discussed.

Spontaneous decay of excited cold atoms into a cavity can drastically affect their translational dynamics, namely, atomic reflection, transmission and localization at the interface. We show that the quantum Zeno effect on excitation decay of an atom is observable in open cavities and waveguides, using a sequence of evolution-interrupting pulses on a nanosecond scale.

Opis:
A mathematical model describing the dynamic emission of intracavity polarized isotropic $Cr^{4+}:YAG$ solid-state saturable absorber was developed. This model considers double pumping laser pulses to simulate the actions of $Cr^{4+}:YAG$ as a dual Q-switched crystal (1.06 μm) and lasing medium (1.4 μm). The model describes the time evolution of interaction between the pumping laser pulse, partial polarizer and the polarized saturable absorber. The analysis of the polarization process is based on the assumption that at each moment of lasing evolution, the state of polarization represented by an eigenstate corresponds to the lowest radiation losses state. The model offers a simple mechanism for studying the kinetics of the pulsed lasers and the influence of the variations of the pumping laser power and nonlinear anisotropy parameter on the characteristics of the output laser pulses 1.06 μm and 1.4 μm. The angular rotation of the passive switch $Cr^{4+}:YAG$ reveals that the transmission of the polarized 1.06 μm laser radiation is strongly anisotropic in the saturation regime. The suggested model estimates the transmission of pumping laser density of the polarized light 1.06 μm radiation as a function of nonlinear anisotropy parameter, temporal behavior of the relative population inversion of Nd-laser, population inversion of the different polarized levels of $Cr^{4+}:YAG$ pulsed laser and the output laser pulse densities under impact of different values of the nonlinear anisotropy which is due to the self-induced anisotropy of its saturated absorption.

Opis:
In this paper, by employing two practical methods of multi-electrode design and tapered waveguide structure, compensation techniques to restore declining carrier density along the quantum dot semiconductor optical amplifier's waveguide are investigated. In the multi-electrode method, the effects of distributing current via electrodes on the gain and the cross-gain modulation for two, three and four-electrode structures are studied. These characteristics are also investigated for the quantum dot semiconductor optical amplifiers with a tapered waveguide structure for the first time, including waveguides with different profiles and width ratios. After due comparison between these two methods, optimum parameters of the two techniques will be used simultaneously along each other to form a combined method. Through these design developments, gain as the main feature of the quantum dot semiconductor optical amplifiers continuously increases, though cross-gain modulator results show that there is a trade-off between the modulation efficiency and improving structure capability of restoring carrier density.

Opis:
Spontaneous radiation by atoms in the presence of the planar dielectric-vacuum interface, planar dielectric waveguides and cylindrical dielectric waveguides are discussed in the frame of cavity quantum electrodynamics in full analogy with that in free space. However, quantization of the electromagnetic field should be based on the modes appropriate to the selected space structure. These quantizations are usually based on incoming waves. However, the discussion of the angular intensity pattern of spontaneous emission can be simplified if the quantization is based on outgoing modes. Using these outgoing photons the angular emission radiation pattern has been obtained from a straightforward application of the perturbative method of the quantum radiation theory. Adding a contribution of the waveguiding photons attached to the waveguides (when they are present) the total emission of the spontaneous radiation and excitation decay rates of atoms radiating in these systems have been derived.

We present absorption measurements of a pseudomorphic Zn$\text{}_{0.75}$Cd$\text{}_{0.25}$Se/ZnSe superlattice and a Zn$\text{}_{0.91}$Cd$\text{}_{0.09}$ Se/ZnSe single quantum well under high hydrostatic pressure applied by a diamond anvil cell. Excitonic transitions as 1s-heavy hole and 1s-light hole between the first bound states or minibands as well as transitions in the buffer material are visible. Transition energies are well understood by calculations of the band structure near Γ. The observed energy distance between photoluminescence and hh-absorption signal gives information on exciton localization. Whereas this distance is nearly pressure independent in the buffer, there is a significant increase at pressures P > 5 GPa for quantum structures.

Opis:
Normalized quantum Stokes operators introduced in Phys. Rev. A 95, 042113 (2017) enable one to better observe non-classical correlations of entangled states of optical fields with undefined photon numbers. For a given run of an experiment the new quantum Stokes operators are defined by the differences of the measured intensities (or photon numbers) at the exits of a polarizer divided by their sum. It is this ratio that is to be averaged, and not the numerator and the denominator separately, as it is in the conventional approach. The new approach allows to construct more robust entanglement indicators against photon-loss noise, which can detect entangled optical states in situations in which witnesses using standard Stokes operators fail. Here we show an extension of this approach beyond phenomena linked with polarization. We discuss EPR-like experiments involving correlations produced by optical beams in a multi-mode bright squeezed vacuum state. EPR-inspired entanglement conditions for all prime numbers of modes are presented. The conditions are much more resistant to noise due to photon loss than similar ones which employ standard Glauber-like intensity, correlations.
