Opis:
Secondary activation of commercial activated carbon (AC) ORGANOSORB 10-CO was carried out at 600, 700 and 800°C with mass ratios of potassium to AC (K/AC) in range 1–3. Crucial samples have shown following CO2  uptakes and SSA – 3.90 mmol/g and 1225 m2/g, 4.54 mmol/g and 1546 m2/g, 4.28 and 1717 m2/g for pristine material and samples obtained at 700°C with K/AC = 2 and at 800°C with K/AC = 3 respectively. Last sample also indicated significant mesopore volume increase in diameter range 2–5 nm, from 0.11 to 0.24 cm3/g. CO2 uptake increase was explained by formation of micropores up to diameter of 0.8 nm, which distribution was established from CO2  sorption using DFT. Surface chemistry of all samples has not changed during modification, what was proven by XPS. Moreover, deeper incorporation of potassium ions into graphite at higher temperatures was observed as confirmed with EDS, XPS and XRD.

Opis:
The effect of two-stage thermal disintegration of sewage sludge on the particle size distribution using laser diffraction method has been studied. The sludge was sampled from municipal sewage treatment plant after each stage of disintegration. The first stage of disintegration known as homogenization proceeds at temperature of 70-90°C and pressure of 3 bar, the second stage called thermal hydrolysis was performed at temperature of 160-170°C and pressure of 6 bar. It was found that the first stage of disintegration has the strongest impact on the reduction of the sludge particle size and changes in chemical properties. The maximum size of the particles from raw sewage before disintegration was 310 μm. After first stage of the process average size of the particles was 250 μm, and during the second stage it was reduced to 226 μm. Sludge disintegration degree (DDCOD) of 59% confirms high effectiveness of the process. We established that the redox potential (Eh) of sludge effluents was changed after each step of the studied process. Furthermore, chemical oxygen demand (COD) increases which leads to the conclusion that resizing of floccules is accompanied by hydrolysis.

Opis:
An attempt was made to synthesise magnesium oxide of a high degree of dispersion permitting its use as adsorbent or catalyst. The synthesis method proposed was precipitation with the use of magnesium nitrate or magnesium sulfate. The influence of temperature, the mode and the rate of dosing, the concentration and the ratio of the reagents on the properties of the final product was analysed. Magnesium oxides were obtained by thermal decomposition of magnesium hydroxides and subjected to thorough analysis. The results permitted selection of the reaction systems ensuring synthesis of the final products of the desired properties.

Opis:
Experimental tests covering the production of struvite MgNH4PO4ź6H2O from water solutions containing 1.0 mass % of phosphate(V) ions using magnesium and ammonium ions in stoichiometric proportions were carried out in a crystallizer of 1.2 dm3 working volume. The process temperature was 298 K. Struvite crystals of mean size Lm from ca. 14 to ca. 38 µm were produced depending on the process environment's pH (9-11) and the mean residence time of suspension in a crystallizer, τ (900-3600 s). In such defined process conditions the linear growth rate of struvite crystals changed from 1.45ź10-8 m/s (pH 9, τ 900 s) to 2.06ź10-9 m/s (pH 11, τ 3600 s) while the nucleation rate from 5.1ź10^7 to 3.2ź10^9 1/(sm3). Crystal product of the most advantageous granular characteristics was produced at pH 9 and the mean residence time 3600 s. Within this product population the largest sizes reached above 200 µm while the number of crystals smaller than 3 mm was kept below 6%.

Opis:
The study was undertaken to obtain an oxide composite (inorganic colourful pigment) in the method based on the use of postgalvanic waste solution of copper(II) sulfate. The conditions of the process of precipitation of synthetic CuOźSiO 2 were optimised by checking the effect of the concentration and the volume ratio of the reagents and the temperature on the physico-chemical parameters of the final product. The oxide composite obtained in the optimum conditions was characterised by high refinement of particles and large specific surface area BET of 326 m2/g.

Opis:
In this work, a modified random pore model was developed to study the kinetics of the carbonation reaction of CaO. Pore size distributions of the CaO pellets were measured by nitrogen adsorption and mercury porosimetry methods. The experiments were carried out in a thermogravimeter at different isothermal temperatures and CO2 partial pressures. A fractional concentration dependency function showed the best accuracy for predicting the intrinsic rate of reaction. The activation energy was determined as 11 kcal/mole between 550–700°C. The effect of product layer formation was also taken into account by using the variable product layer diffusivity. Also, the model was successfully predicted the natural lime carbonation reaction data extracted from the literature.
