    This article discusses the issue of the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on the processes of economic development of the region and the host country. It is commonly believed that foreign direct investments contribute to economic development and improve the competitive position of the host region. Thus, the article is an attempt to analyze the role of FDI for economic development of the country and the region. The discussion indicating benefits and risks in this area is essential to conduct a proper economic policy.

    The main goal of the paper is to investigate the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) in advanced business services sector on economic development. We analyse the topic on the regional level as FDI in Poland is not equally distributed across the country. In order to investigate the research problem we estimate linear regression model using panel data. The dependent variable is the value of GDP per capita as the indicator of economic development. The most important independent variable from the point of view of the main objective of the paper is the number of foreign-owned advanced business services firms. This variable will be also lagged to control time necessary for investment to materialise and influence the economy. The main conclusion of the analysis of data over the period of 10 years is that there is a positive influence of operations of foreign-owned firms in the analysed sector on the economic growth of particular regions in Poland.

    The goal of this paper is to present the results of the empirical analysis of the role of emerging Asian economies in the global market for business services. The focus is on India, as the leader in advanced business services in the region. The method applied in this paper is the quantitative analysis of data related to trade and foreign direct investment in services. The novelty of the paper lays in focusing on business services through their international exchange and activities of multinational corporations. This papers aims to focus on broader economic perspective rather than usual offshoring. The main conclusion of the paper is the rising role of services in economies that were previously focused on manufacturing and merchandise trade. Both due to the structural changes in foreign markets and home governments’ policies the process of tertiarisation is taking place. Special focus is on advanced business services which require and create vast amount of knowledge.

    The paper aims at diagnosing and evaluating the position of South Korea in contemporary, globalized economy. The basic problem of this publication is the assessment of South Korean economy internationalization in post-crisis period. The line of reasoning consists of four essential elements. At first socioeconomic situation in South Korea is presented and selected pro-development elements of its economic policy are discussed. The next part focuses on the analysis of South Korea’s engagement in international trade. Then South Korea’s participation in international transfer of capital in the form of form of foreign direct investment is described. Finally, international competitive position South Korea against the background of selected economies is shown. The research tools used in the paper include literature studies, descriptive and comparative analysis. The research proved a significant position of South Korea in international trade and world transfer of capital in the form of FDI.

    The deterioration of the general investment climate, the economic recession, and changes in consumption patterns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have forced various foreign investors to restrict or suspend investments. One of the possible reactions by investors to the coronavirus crisis is divestment. This article aimed at detecting and analysing the regularities between the risk of foreign divestment in various industry branches and the destinations of FDIs at the level of NUTS 1 macroregions of the Visegrad Group countries during the COVID-19 pandemic, using correspondence analysis. The results of the assessment of the risk of foreign divestment in NUTS 1 macroregions of the Visegrad Group countries are characterised by diversity in terms of territorial and sectoral layout, depending on the analysed scenario of the COVID-19 pandemic development. It is hard to clearly indicate a macroregion which, irrespective of the scale of the spread of the disease, could be perceived by foreign investors as invariably highly risky or characterised by a constantly low risk of divestment.

    This article examines the firm-level and regional determinants of inward FDI into Polish firms in the framework of sectoral analysis. All Polish companies with foreign capital (21 895 firms) were divided into three basic groups: firms of manufacturing sector (11 064 firms); services (6718) and sales (4149). This investigation includes the period from 2003 to 2012 (10 years). The main aim of this article is to determine what factors (firm-level or regional) have more impact on FDI attraction and how their impact depends on a sector which a host firm operates in. The firm-level characteristics which were used in this analysis were total assets of a host firm; its productivity; firm size; R&D expenditure; level of high-skilled workers and age of a recipient firm. The regional determinants of inward FDI into Polish firms were: the economic potential of a region in which a firm operates; the road and rail road density of this region and the location of a firm: closer to EU or non-EU countries and closer to seaside or to the capital city – Warsaw.

    This study examines the effects of financial globalisation on the Nigerian economy using data from the Central Bank of Nigeria statistical bulletin and the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics reports from 1992 to 2017. Using both descriptive and inferential statistical analyses, the study reveals that financial globalisation has helped to mobilise foreign direct investment into the economy and the significant positive effect of personal remittances on per capita income of Nigerians. Therefore it recommends that favourable policies to attract and retain FDI and personal remittances from developed nations should be encouraged and African governments and economic actors should consider all stakeholders’ interests, and ensure that an international financial and trade system is “fair and reciprocal” to eliminate the persisting trends in abject poverty, predatory trade policies and the escalation of economic inequalities in Africa.

    Japan as one of highly developed countries of the world, for many years, plays a significant role in the Asia-Pacific region. Countries of the region are the target market for Japanese products and Japanese capital. Through the foreign trade and foreign direct investment, Japan affects the shape of the relationship in the region and the process of Asian regionalism. Constantly around 50% of Japanese exports go to Asian countries and a similar percentage of Japanese imports come from the examined region. Japan is also a major exporter of capital in the form of foreign investment to countries in the region, which makes up a considerable part of it. Trade and foreign investment are the only part of the indicators of the role of Japan in the Asia-Pacific regionalism, but these are factors clearly indicating the strong commitment of Japan in the region. The aim of the article is to present the role played by Japan in the Asian regionalism, by showing the Japanese foreign trade and inflows and outflows of foreign direct investment.

    Głównym celem artykułu jest omówienie kwestii związanych z zawodnością państwa w kontekście wybranych obszarów działalności korporacji transnarodowych (KTN). Przeprowadzona analiza wykazała, że państwo w odniesieniu do korporacji transnarodowych okazuje się nieefektywne w wielu obszarach ich działalności (np. unikanie opodatkowania przez KTN, wykorzystywanie pozycji monopolistycznej przez te przedsiębiorstwa, ich negatywny wpływ na środowisko naturalne, a także ekonomiczna wrażliwość). Zrównoważony rozwój gospodarki światowej wymaga podjęcia działań na szczeblu nie tylko poszczególnych krajów, ale także organizacji międzynarodowych i ugrupowań integracyjnych, które mogłyby wypracować określone zasady dotyczące nie tylko przestrzegania prawa podatkowego przez KTN, ale także uzyskania większej kontroli nad działalnością tych podmiotów, w tym kontroli na przepływami kapitału w skali globalnej. Dyskutowane w artykule problemy włączają się w nurt badawczy dotyczący roli państwa w gospodarce rynkowej oraz ograniczonej efektywności tego podmiotu w zakresie sprawowania kontroli nad działalnością korporacji transnarodowych.
