    The literature in the leadership field covers extensive research, studies and compendia. However, only a small part of them are focused on leadership in research and development (R&D) teams working on innovations. Those authors who address the subject highlight the specifics of the scientists’ and engineers’ leadership engaged in creative work on innovation. Even less research and papers are connected with academic scientific teams searching for technology-based innovations, while one can recognize a research gap in the area of leadership, in sophisticated technology-based project teams like interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary teams. In this article was present a review of literature on leadership of innovative R&D teams. The goal of the article is to present a review of the literature in the area of leadership in R&D teams, along with a critical analysis of selected leadership models as well as an indication of the research interest and trends in terms of the described issues.

    The study identifies factors determining accounting policy in respect to signaling results of undertaken R&D activity. Under International Financial Reporting Standards there is a choice between the capitalization of R&D expenses in the form of intangible assets or treating them as reporting period costs thus decreasing financial result. In order to test if the decision to capitalize development expenditures is a way of signaling the success of undertaken research and development (R&D) activity to the stakeholders, a logistic regression analysis was performed on a sample of 112 non-financial firms listed on the WSE in 2010–2013. Development of enterprises in the global market depends on the implementation of innovative products and services. This can be achieved through the use of available intellectual resources and by investing in the R&D activity.

    The article shows problems of trust in building, development and functioning of scientific units with reference to given R & D networks. Three networks of scientific units which have different origin, potential and activity profile are discussed. The article refers to and is a continuation of an earlier publication titled “Trust in R & D network of scientific units. The role of originator” published in a quarterly “Management Science”. Case studies in this article show the importance of trust in different phases of development of a scientific unit as a key factor influencing network activity and illustrate the influence of conditioning on its level.

    The aim of the article is to discuss the innovation policies implemented in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico, which promote innovativeness of enterprises. It is claimed that the innovation policies in those countries should increasingly contribute to the so-called inclusive growth, which may be achieved by supporting the innovativeness of enterprises, SMEs in particular, as well as through the greater mobilisation of these entities to become actively involved in the promotion of innovation.Its promotion is considered to be the key course of action to boost the economic growth in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. The innovation policy should account for the aspect of inclusiveness and should be strongly focused on the structural modifications of national innovation systems in the discussed countries, with priority support for enterprises, including both small and medium ones as well as their capabilities to create innovations and absorb them.

    In contemporary research and economic discussions, a great deal of attention is paid to issues concerning the relationship between competitiveness and research and development (R&D) activity. The measurement and assessment of the impact of R&D activity are extremely difficult but at the same time very important, in particular for authorities determining the level of expenditure on R&D and the method of spending public funds as well as for enterprises assessing the expected profits derived from R&D. The main aim of the article is an attempt to quantify the impact of R&D expenditure on three selected characteristics defining the competitiveness of manufacturing enterprises (gross value added, sold production and labour productivity). The analysis was carried out using panel models. The study makes use of statistical data published by the Central Statistical Office for individual divisions of manufacturing (Section C of the Polish Classification of Activities – PKD) in the years 2009-2016. The conducted analyses indicate that R&D expenditure constitutes a significant determinant of the competitiveness of the analysed divisions of manufacturing.

    The paper contributes to the literature on voluntary disclosure of strategy and R&D issues. It refers to disclosures made in the annual reports and at the corporate websites of 69 Polish IT companies. It examines the association between the voluntary disclosure index and company age, size, ownership dispersion, board size, financial performance, leverage and growth prospects. The empirical evidence provided by the research study confirmed that the level of strategy and R&D disclosure was dependent on company age. It was also validated that the larger companies and these listed on the primary market revealed more information on strategy and R&D issues. The study gave evidence that if market capitalization of the company was higher as compared to peer entities managers provided more narratives about the strategy and R&D activities.

    The study offers a new reading of innovative environment, which when taken together constitute the basis for thinking about regions, society and space through the lens of smart specialisation. The aim of article is the identification and characterisation of the main features and challenges of smart specialisation, understood as a strategic approach to economic development through targeted support to research and innovation. This approach combines industrial, educational and innovation policies to suggest that countries or regions pinpoint and select a limited number of priority areas for knowledge- -based investments, focusing on their strengths and comparative advantages. In the article, three case studies (from Poland, the Czech Republic and Turkey) of different types of implementation of smart specialisation illustrate the utility of the intelligent policies.

Business environment institutions influence economic development through supporting entrepreneurship, and consequently play a significant role in the socio-economic development of a country.     An effective knowledge-based economy requires regular cooperation between science and business. This is possible thanks to enterprises that create and implement innovations The paper focuses on the recognition of R&D expenditure. This aims to verify if firms with a scientist on their board are more likely to invest in the R&D. We conduct a tobit panel analysis of over 18,000 Polish private firms combined with data on patents and scientists employed at universities. The findings show that firms with scientists on the supervisory board are likely to invest more in R&D. However, these investment in R&D of firms with a scientist on the board are financial constraint. Their growth depends on access to finance. Therefore, institutions in Poland should support and promote cooperation between science and business, aiming for the realization of the implementation research. This approach requires updated regulations in the accounting area relating to the recognition of R&D inputs and outcomes.

    EU strategy documents, including the Europe 2020 Strategy, emphasise the priority role of industry in the growth of EU economies. The aim of the presented research is to measure and assess the impact of expenditure on research and development (R&D) activities on the competitiveness of manufacturing divisions in Poland. Labour productivity, expressed as (1) a quotient of gross value added and employment, and (2) a quotient of sold production and employment in the analysed manufacturing divisions, was adopted as the measure of competitiveness. The empirical part of the paper is based on data published by the Central Statistical Office. The analysis covers the period 2009-2017 and provides a contribution to determining the role and importance of research and development as well as innovative activities in shaping competitive advantages of manufacturing enterprises. The obtained results for panel models confirm that R&D expenditure is a secondary factor in changes occurring in the Polish manufacturing industry.

    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest identyfikacja sposobu zarządzania projektem badawczo-rozwojowym (B+R) w obszarze e-usług dla mieszkańców, wytworzonych przez przedsiębiorstwo informatyczne AMM Systems Sp. z o.o. – grantobiorcę programu RPOWD 2014-2020, działanie 1.2.A. W artykule przedstawiono badanie wstępne o charakterze pilo- tażowym, po którym planuje się badanie pogłębione w przedsiębiorstwach, które skorzystały z dotacji na rozwój działalności B+R. Zdefiniowano pytania badawcze, m.in.: w jakim celu AMM podjął się rozwoju działalności badawczo-rozwojowej, opierając się na powołanym dziale badawczo-rozwojowym? Czy zaplanowane do wytworzenia produkty (e-usługi) zostały wykonane zgodnie z planem? Czy wytworzone e-usługi wykreowały przewagę konkurencyjną dla przedsiębiorstwa AMM? Podmiotem badanym był AMM Systems sp. z o.o. (wcześniej SISMS sp. z o.o.). Przedmiotem badań zaś – działalność spółki oraz działalność działu badawczo-rozwojowego, realizującego projekt badawczo-rozwojowy współfinansowany z UE.

    The main objective of the article is to select an optimal R&D area of the automotive sector in the context of the possibility of implementing the Follow-the-Sun (FTS) strategy. Empirical research covers three areas of R&D of this sector, excluding the area of Software Development, which according to current literature is the only one in which the FTS strategy is applied. The research was conducted between January and August 2019. The spatial scope of the research covered six international automotive companies providing R&D services in at least one of the three surveyed areas. Due to the innovativeness of the presented subject matter, the research part of the study was preceded by the necessary information on the FTS strategy itself. Its main objective is to further increase the pace of R&D work by using project teams dispersed in distant time zones and capable of ensuring a 24-hour work cycle without the need to perform it at night.
    Głównym celem artykułu jest wyłonienie optymalnego obszaru B+R sektora motoryzacyjnego w kontekście możliwości implementacji strategii Follow-the-Sun (FTS). Badania empiryczne obejmują trzy obszary B+R tego sektora, wykluczając obszar Software Development, będący według aktualnej literatury przedmiotu jedynym, w którym strategia FTS znajduje zastosowanie. Badania przeprowadzone zostały pomiędzy styczniem a sierpniem 2019 roku i objęły sześć międzynarodowych przedsiębiorstw sektora motoryzacyjnego świadczących usługi B+R przynajmniej w jednym z trzech badanych obszarów. Z uwagi na innowacyjność przedstawianej tematyki część badawcza opracowania została poprzedzona niezbędnymi informacjami na temat samej strategii FTS. Jej głównym założeniem jest dalszy wzrost tempa prac B+R z wykorzystaniem zespołów projektowych rozproszonych w odległych strefach czasowych oraz mogących zapewnić całodobowy cykl pracy bez konieczności wykonywania jej w nocy.

    Celem artykułu jest ocena poziomu innowacyjności Polski – głównie w kontekście źródeł finansowania działalności innowacyjnej, w tym badawczo-rozwojowej (B+R). Autor w artykule przedstawia strukturę finansowania B+R i innowacji w Polsce. Niskie wskaźniki innowacyjności polskiej gospodarki plasują nasz kraj na odległych miejscach w rankingach globalnej innowacyjności, co stanowi poważny problem rozwojowy. Wynika to między innymi z niskiego poziomu nakładów wewnętrznych na B+R. Z kolei brak środków jest wskazywany przez firmy jako jedna z głównych barier inwestycji w innowacje. W wykluczeniu innowacyjnym najbardziej tracą mikroprzedsiębiorcy i sektor małych i średnich przedsiębiorstw (MŚP), który to nie jest zdolny do ponoszenia wysokich nakładów na B+R. Autor, wykorzystując metody statystyki opisowej, zwraca uwagę na niski poziom innowacji w Polsce wywołany głównie niską innowacyjnością przedsiębiorstw, co wyklucza je ze światowego wyścigu budowy gospodarki opartej na wiedzy.
    Low levels of innovation indicators characterize Polish economy as being unable to generate innovations. This results in distant places of Poland in global innovation and competitiveness rankings and implies serious consequences for sustainable growth and development of the whole economy. The aim of this paper is to assess the level of Polish innovation mainly in the context of sources of financing innovative activities including research and development (R&D). In this paper the structure of financing of R&D and innovation activities in Poland is presented. Using the methods of descriptive statistics, the author draws attention to the low level of innovation in Poland caused mainly by low innovativeness of enterprises, which excludes them from the global race to build a knowledge-based economy. The main reasons for innovational exclusions found in this paper include inter alia, the low level of internal expenditure on R&D, and the lack of funds indicated by companies as one of the main barriers to investment in innovation.
