Opis:
Item response theory (IRT) is widely used in educational and psychological research to model how participants respond to test items in isolation and in bundles. Item response theory has replaced classical measurement theory as a framework for test development, scale constructions, scree reporting and test evaluation. The most popular of the item response models for multiple choice tests are the one-parameter (i. e. the Rasch model) and threeparameter models. This is the general framework for specifying the functional relationship between a respondent’s underlying latent trait level, commonly known as ability in educational testing, or the factor score in the factor analysis tradition and an item level stimulus. In this paper, arguments are offered for continuing research and applying multidimensional IRT models. The position is also taken that multi-parameter IRT models have potentially important roles to play in the advancement of measurement theory about which models to use should depend on model fit to the test data. All calculations are conducted in R available from CRAN which is a widely-used and well-known environment for statistical computing and graphics.

In this article we investigate the latest developments on life expectancy modeling. We review some mortality projection stochastic models and their assumptions, and assess their impact on projections of future life expectancy for selected countries in the EU. More specifically, using the age- and sex-specific data of 20 countries, we compare the point projection accuracy and bias of six principal component methods for the projection of mortality rates and life expectancy. The six methods are variants and extensions of the Lee-Carter method. Based on one-step projection errors, the Renshaw and Haberman method provides the most accurate point projections of male mortality rates and the method is the least biased. The Quadratic CBD model with the cohort effects method performs the best for female mortality. While all methods rather underestimate variability in mortality rates and life expectancy, the Renshaw and Haberman method is the most accurate.

Opis:
The analysis of the international transmission of the economic shocks and influence, among them the international effects of the national macroeconomic policies, constitutes a very wide and multi-aspectual field of the open economy macroeconomics. Flourishing interest in this field of theory and research, resulting from the post-war dynamic development of the international economic relations (in many facets of this issue) and more broadly − globalization, has led to improving the ”old” schemes and models considered as underlying the core of the open economies’ theory. The evolution of the thougts on international economic linkages and progress made in analysing them were marked by including into the analysis some new assumptions more adequate to the changes observed in the global economy and more perfectly reflecting new tendencies creating modern global ”reality”. All above has led to shaping so called new advanced approach to the open economy macroeconomics. In the empirical aspect, this approach is based on wide implementation of econometric modelling and panel data analysis. As to the theory we can say it is a synthesis – the effect of many years’ scientific research in the field. The aim of the article is to present the new advanced models of the global economy, in particular this part of them which refers to the international transmission of the effects of national macroeconomic (fiscal and monetary) policies and other shocks influencing modern open markets (interest rate shocks, price shocks, terms of trade shocks etc.). To realize so specified goal the following models will be briefly presented: International Monetary Fund’s Multimod, INTERLINK OECD (widely used in the global research in the 80s and the 90s) and the New Global Model OECD (currently implemented). As the background the chosen key steps of the evolution in the theoretical approach as well as empirical research in this stream of the open economy macroeconomics will be overally presented, starting from the Mundell-Fleming model being the crucial turning point of the thoughts on international linkages and macroeconomic policy influence. The author is going to underline the following aspects of the progress which has taken place in the questioned field of research: implementation of new approaches originating from the neo-classical concepts (e.g. the monetary approach to modelling the exchange rates), incorporating the monopolistic competition, monopolistic and oligopolistic economy models into the overall analysis, taking into consideration the short-term effects of the dynamic changes coming from temporary or permanent price, demand or terms of trade shocks, taking the assumption of the incomplete markets and intertemporal choice as an integral part of the analysis.

Opis:
Item response theory (IRT) is a model-based theory in which the responses to test items depend on some person and item characteristics, according to specific probabilistic rela-tions. The simplest and most popular are dichotomous IRT models that specify a single (i.e. unidimensional) latent trait under the assumption of normal distribution. This article reviews the latent class ordinal polytomous item response models (LC-IRT) and presents the compari-son with the well-known traditional IRT models (based on the assumption of a normally dis-tributed latent trait). The main goal of the article is to compare the estimation results of differ-ent kinds of ordinal polytomous IRT models with continuous and discrete latent variable in measuring job satisfaction in Poland. We analyzed data collected as part of the International Social Survey Programme using the ltm and MultiLCIRT packages of R.

Opis:
EU strategy documents, including the Europe 2020 Strategy, emphasise the priority role of industry in the growth of EU economies. The aim of the presented research is to measure and assess the impact of expenditure on research and development (R&D) activities on the competitiveness of manufacturing divisions in Poland. Labour productivity, expressed as (1) a quotient of gross value added and employment, and (2) a quotient of sold production and employment in the analysed manufacturing divisions, was adopted as the measure of competitiveness. The empirical part of the paper is based on data published by the Central Statistical Office. The analysis covers the period 2009-2017 and provides a contribution to determining the role and importance of research and development as well as innovative activities in shaping competitive advantages of manufacturing enterprises. The obtained results for panel models confirm that R&D expenditure is a secondary factor in changes occurring in the Polish manufacturing industry.

Opis:
The goal of the paper was to verify the stability of Taylor rule parameters. The empirical analysis was performed for Poland; using 1996-2016 monthly data. More specifically, we verify two hyphotheses: (1) the behaviour of interest rate can be described using Taylor rule; (2) the Taylor rule with parameters subject to Markov switching performs better than the one with constant parameters. We take a system approach, where a Taylor rule is a part of small scale DSGE model. The bayesian inference is used to estimate the model and compare the specifications. The results indicate that models with switching parameters are better in terms of marginal data density. The best model is based on forward looking Taylor rule, where the parameters expressing the magnitude of the reaction to inflation and output gap were subject to Markov switching, while interest rate smoothing was constant. The identified regime switching can be interpreted as not responsing for inflation below the tar-get (opportunistic disinflation declared for 2001-2002 by Polish monetary authorities) or not responding to inflation driven mostly by EU accression (2004-2005) or increased VAT (2004-2005, 2011).

The problems referring to the functioning of economy are closely related to a territory. The place of their occurrence, whether it is a country, a region or a smaller territorial unit, implies the scale and the benchmark for carrying out analyses. Numerous phenomena within the area of economic research are of complex nature and, moreover, it is frequently difficult to express them in a measurable form. The solution to such “inconvenience” is e.g. the application of qualitative variables. Logistic regression is one of the tools allowing the assessment of dependence and prediction in case of qualitative variables of dichotomous type. The purpose of the study is to review the applications of logit models in regional studies.

Maturity models are a kind of compendium of knowledge from a given field and a guide for managers translating knowledge into concrete actions which aim is to change and improve an organization. They describe the evolutionary development path which enables an organization to move from the state of inconsistent, short-term business actions to the arranged, monitored and managed ones. The article presents and compares two procedures of maturity models designing and design principles, that is criteria which a maturity model should correspond to as a result of designing, helping potential users in comparing and assessing of existing models. The aim of the article is the assessment of EFQM excellence model as to meeting the criteria of usefulness and application included in design priniples. EFQM excellence model is an example of a well designed prescriptive model which sufficiently covers the most important usefulness criteria.

In recent years it has noticed that innovation and innovativeness have become the basis for the success of not only individual business entities but entire regions and economies. What is more, there have been opinions in the literature that individual innovations are no longer a guarantee of survival for an organization, but such a guarantee is rather the capacity for continuous innovation. Therefore the organization’s ability to transform resources in favour of the organization – the innovation capability – is decisive, while the ability to use resources appropriately, including innovation capabilities, is referred to as innovation maturity. In this article the author decided to introduce the essence of innovation maturity models as a tool for measuring innovation maturity. These models are a tool for assessing the level of innovation maturity of an organization. It is worth adding that maturity models originate from the Capability Maturity Model developed by the Software Engineering Institute.

Opis:
In contemporary research and economic discussions, a great deal of attention is paid to issues concerning the relationship between competitiveness and research and development (R&D) activity. The measurement and assessment of the impact of R&D activity are extremely difficult but at the same time very important, in particular for authorities determining the level of expenditure on R&D and the method of spending public funds as well as for enterprises assessing the expected profits derived from R&D. The main aim of the article is an attempt to quantify the impact of R&D expenditure on three selected characteristics defining the competitiveness of manufacturing enterprises (gross value added, sold production and labour productivity). The analysis was carried out using panel models. The study makes use of statistical data published by the Central Statistical Office for individual divisions of manufacturing (Section C of the Polish Classification of Activities – PKD) in the years 2009-2016. The conducted analyses indicate that R&D expenditure constitutes a significant determinant of the competitiveness of the analysed divisions of manufacturing.
