history of translation
Opis:
In Poland, Slovak translatological thought is mainly associated with the concepts of Anton Popovič and his school of translation. The article presents an overview of the history of the de‑ velopment of translation and translation studies in Slovakia, and then discusses the poet L’ubomír Feldek’s concept based on his practical experiences as an interpreter and critic of translation. Feldek, like Popovič treats translation as a form of communication, emphasizing a focus on the issues of reception. He presented his conception in the book Z reči do reči (1977), which was met with great interest by Slovak theoreticians of translation. The article presents the polemical and critical opinions and acceptance and praise which were formulated at the time of the publication of the Feldek’s book, and the comments subsequent to the most recent controversy, which document the place of the views of the poet — translator in Slovak translatology.

This paper raises two main questions. The first one is how to situate the strategy of representation of Ottoman Turks in historical novels of Vera Mutafchieva "The Djem Affair" and "The Last Shishmans" in the frames of bulgarian historical and literary context of the ‘60s and ‘70s of the 20th century. It is not possibile to describe this strategy without reference to the impact of folklore and nineteenth century tradition of representing the Muslims and Turks. In this context fields three themes that causes conflicts are distinguished and their interpretation in the translation of the novel could be used as a criterium for the translation’s evaluation. These themes are the notion of East and West, the topic of multiethnicity in Ottoman Empire and bulgarian stereotypes of Turks, Islam and national identity. The second question is how the Polish translator interpreted above mentioned historical novels of Mutafchieva. The analysis of some important details shows that the polish translation of "The Djem Affair" do not follow original emphases and thus eliminate some local meanings of the novel, which means that it obliterates some of its key conflicts and contradictions.

This article aims to specify one method of descriptive analysis, which can be used in the epistemological framework of the Descriptive Translation Studies and the theory of the polysystem. The challenge is essentially to define the unit of analysis in relation to traditional translation methods (borrowing, tracing, literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence, adaptation), defined in 1958 by Jean-Paul Vinay and Jean Darbelnet. We aim to associate the comparative stylistics with polysystem theory on the descriptive studies of translation and to propose a method of qualitative and quantitative analysis on corpus of source and target texts. The method could be profitable especially for studies in the field of the history of translation (in the phase of “historical criticism” according to the taxonomy of the discipline formulated by A. Pym).

This article explores two paradoxes related to the concept of the Anthology of Contemporary Polish Poets that are associated with stereotypes about Polish poetry which exists amongst Bulgarian readers and researchers. The first paradox is related to the establishment of a model of the reader, introduced by Boyan Penev in his anthology from 1921, which limits opportunities for comparative reading of the proposed anthologized material. The second paradox is the discrepancy between the statements made in the introduction to the anthology that the relationships between literary phenomena of the periods before and after the Second World War will be clarified and elaborated and the actual omission of the role of the vanguard in the development of the Polish poetry. This paradox is caused by attempts to impose stereotyped notions of poetics and ideology of the literary avant-garde in the time the anthology was published.

Dora Gabe’s concept of translation as a product and creative practice was formed by her cooperation with one of the most prominent Bulgarian scholars – Boyan Penev. Later on, after Penev’s death, the poetess has changed and modified her understanding of the process of translation significantly. In this article the author claims that a corporeal experience of the process of translation, spontaneity and a consciously recognized need to cooperate with the author are the most important characteristics of Gabe’s own translational project. Gabe’s long-lasting correspondence with Anna Kamieńska shows all those characteristics and proves that in the late period of Gabe’s work translation was a way to establish a feeling of com-munion and transgress her cultural and artistic identity.

Opis:
Translations have been an interesting part of the history of literature. What has been their function and meaning in different literary epochs? Did they promote new tendencies or influence the creativity of the writers? What has been underestimated so far is the art of translation itself, that is, the development of techniques and styles of translation according to changes in the translator’s work conditions, especially the emancipation, secularization and professionalization of the profession, so that they have been seen as equal in importance to the writers themselves. What should be analyzed are the procedures and practices of translation, which can be interpreted according to contemporary textology. The history of the art of translation is also inspired by contemporary cultural studies, because it regards translation as an institution and focuses on translation discourse, that is, the complex of images, ideas and metaphors that each translator must respect when considering their readers. The tradition of translation is partly different from literary tradition in that the rules of ‘good translation’ promoted at certain times create a codex of a translator’s work.

The paper presents the work of Bulgarian literary critic and scholar Stefan Minchev (1874—1912). In his work Iz istorija na bylgarskija roman (From the History of Bulgarian Novel) created in 1908—1912, the author includes not only Bulgarian pieces, but also translated and adapted (pobalgareni) ones. The paper recounts Minchev’s project and attempts to answer the question about motivation of the literary scholar. Was it unreflective gesture, or rather treating it as a natural stage in history of the literary genre? Was it to gentrify young literature and language, or to show its weakness? And finally — was it based on already existing model or it was innovate, groundbreaking not only in the context of Bulgarian or Slavonic literary translation studies.

Ta svojevrstna perspektiva ni ohranjena v prevajanju, kjer prevajalka mora upoštevati predvsem poljskega bralca, ki slov‑ ensko zgodovino le bežno pozna. Avtorica članka še posebej posveča pozornost ponazoritvi posledic prevajalskih strategij in njihovih razmerij do eseja kot nosilca zgodovine. Raziskuje in analizira prevajalske izbire na leksikalno ‑semantični ravni ter prikazuje njihov vpliv na dojemanje prevedenega besedila.
The article deals with the topic of translator’s choices while investigating the case of the translation of Drago Jančar’s book, Terra incognita, translated in Poland by Joanna Pomorska. This article is based on the theory of tropes by Hayden White, whose research is directly related to the historiography, and points out to the trap of objective or truly scientific history which, in fact, cannot exist. The same also applies to the essays that include some threads of history, such as Jančar’s essays concerning Slovenian history, analyzed not only in the Slovenian, but also in Yugoslavian and even European context. The image of history in his works is built on the remarkable way, where prevails the irony arising from the specific argument on the wheel of history. This unique perspective cannot be retained in the translation, where the translator must take into account a Polish reader’s limited knowledge about the Slovenian history. The author pays particular attention to illustrating the effects of translation strategies and its attitude towards the essay as a relay of history. She analyzes the translation choices on the lexical ‑semantic level, and shows their impact on the perception of the text.

The article refers to J. Jarniewicz’s concept of two types of translators attitude: legislator and ambassador. Polish translations of Slovak literature generally exist as a representative of the original literature and culture. Circumstances of creating and publication of the oldest Polish translations of this literature: a folk song, part of J. Ros- tworowski’s novel Zamek na Czorsztynie, a novel by J. Kalinciak Restavracia translated by P. Stalmach and a drama Matka by J. Gregor Tajovsky translated by F. The paper attempts to describe selected aspects of the impact of new concepts (such as history of European literature or history of the world republic of literature) that have entered into the literary and translation discourse and that coexist with the traditional categories such as ancient literature, modern literature, national literature, world literature, synthesis of the history of literature or process of the history of literature. The “confusion of tongues” (confusio linguarum) connected with the emergence of these novel concepts has undoubtedly affected the discipline of translation studies and, in particular, the promotional aspects of translation and self-translation as well as other related phenomena. An interesting role in this discussion is also played by what I refer to as “perspective,” from which the incorporation of given works or authors into European literature or world literature is being observed. In two out of the four analyzed works, the French (Parisian) perspective prevails, characteristic of a certain stage of comparative studies that seemed to have lost significance some time ago. The two remaining works, written from the Czech perspective, are addressed to English- and German-speaking readers, respectively.
Práce je pokusem popsat některé aspekty vlivu jež v dyskursu literárnědnem (i překladatelském) maji některe nové koncepty (vedle již zavedených: literatura starověká, literatura novověká, literatura obecná, literárněhistorická synteza, literárněhistorický proces). Konkrétně jde o koncepty historie evropské literatury, historie světové literatury a zejmena světové republiky literatury. To, co vycházi z těchto konceptu (svého druhu confusio linguarum) muselo změnit široce pojatou translatologii, především pokud jde o propagační silu překladu, autopřekladu, atd.
