    In his book Fiasco Stanisław Lem is asking what human nature is, what man aspires to, how he achieves it. What is Good and Evil? Who will win in the eternal fight between these two forces? Human beings conquer the outer space, but do they manage to subdue their inner space? Accustomed to thinking about themselves as the peak of the civilization progress and the quintessence of the Universe, are men capable of accepting meekly the unpleasant truth that in this Universe they were not given any exceptional and honourable role? Lem’s answers shatter the comfortable anthropocentric ideas of mankind and its place in the world. The author speaks directly of the difficulties of liberating our consciousness from the accumulated complexes, stereotypes and prejudice, from the intolerance towards everything different, foreign and incomprehensible. He states that even when they conquer time and space, men are helpless in the face of the dark forces hidden deep inside their souls, in the face of the unavoidable fall of Earth’s civilization.

    Opis:
    Jeśli zło jest bezmyślne, jak stwierdziła Hannah Arendt w Eichmann w Jerozolimie, to czy myślenie może ochronić nas przed złem? W pierwszej części artykułu dokonuję rozróżnienia między intelektem, który kieruje się logiką myślenia i rozumem, który kieruje się etyką myślenia. Stawiam tezę, że jeśli etyka myślenia (rozum) nie kieruje logiką myślenia (intelektem), to rodzi zło i fanatyzm. W części drugiej rozważam takie przyczyny współczesnej bezmyślności, jak: przeciętność, pragmatyzm, mierzalność i dominację mentalności merkantylnej. W części trzeciej piszę o odpowiedzialności uniwersytetów, a szczególnie nauk humanistycznych i szeroko pojętej kultury, za kształcenie rozumu.
    If, as Hannah Arendt stated in Eichmann in Jerusalem, evil is thoughtless, can thinking protect us from evil? In the first part of the article, I make a distinction between intellect (which follows the logic of thinking) and reason (which follows the ethics of thinking). I put forward the thesis that if the ethics of thinking (reason) does not guide the logic of thinking (intellect), it breeds evil and fanaticism. In the second part of this text, I address causes of contemporary thoughtlessness, including mediocrity, pragmatism, measurability, and the dominance of the mercantile mentality. The final part of this essay emphasizes the responsibility of universities (especially in the area of the humanities) and, in broader perspective, of culture, for the education of reason.

    Artykuł w zamierzeniu autora ma uwidaczniać poznawcze walory literatury w zakresie moralności i aksjologii. Tekst zaczyna się od wymienienia funkcji literatury, podkreślając funkcję poznawczą. Wskazuje na różnice poznania literackiego i naukowego. Następnie autor przedstawia możliwość skupienia się, podczas poznania literackiego, na kwestiach moralnych i aksjologicznych, posiłkuje się przy tym konkretnymi przykładami literackimi. Stoi na stanowisku, że przed-socjologiczne poznanie literackie może być nie mniej cenne i doniosłe od poznania socjologicznego. Oba, jego zdaniem, niejako się uzupełniają.
    Krzysztof Sztalt’s aim in this article is to highlight the cognitive values of literature in the field of morality and axiology. He begins by listing the functions of literature and emphasizing the cognitive function. He goes on to indicate the differences between literary and scientific cognition. He then considers the possibility of focusing, during the process of the cognition of literary works, on moral and axiological problems. Addressing these problems he cites a specific literary examples. He argues that pre-sociological literary cognition can be no less valuable and important than sociological cognition. In his opinion, both forms of cognition complement each other.
