Opis:
Partly as a result of compartmentalized academic specializations and history teaching, in accounts of the global upheavals of 1968, Native Americans are either not mentioned, or at best are tagged on as an afterthought. “Was there a Native American 1968?” is the central question this article aims to answer. Native American activism in the 1960s was no less flashy, dramatic or confrontational than the protests by the era’s other struggles – it is simply overshadowed by later actions of the movement. Using approaches from Transnational American Studies and the history of social movements, this article argues that American Indians had a “long 1968” that originated in Native America’s responses to the US government’s Termination policy in the 1950s, and stretched from their ‘training’ period in the 1960s, through their dramatic protests from the late 1960s through the 1970s, all the way to their participation at the United Nations from 1977 through the rest of the Cold War. While their radicalism and protest strategies made Native American activism a part of the US domestic social movements of the long 1960s, the nature of American Indian sovereignty rights and transnationalism place the Native American long 1968 on the rights spectrum further away from civil rights, and closer to a national liberation struggle-which links American Indian activism to the decolonization movements of the Cold War.

Opis:
Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kiev is not just a geographic location, the city’s central square, but an area of freedom etched on the topography of the Ukrainian collective memory, an element of the symbolic resources on which today’s Ukrainian identity is founded. The concept of “Maidan” is filled with rich symbolic content. Maidan has become a social, political, ethical and religious category. Ukrainian revolution, Crimean crisis, separatist aspirations in Donetsk and Lugansk show how complicated the nation-building processes in Ukraine are. The role of Maidan in shaping citizenship among the competitive strategies of identity is worth noting. The question arises if a modern political nation was born in Maidan. Referring to my own observations made in Kiev in January and February 2013, the Ukrainian media coverage and numerous conversations with residents of Kiev, I would like to point to Kiev’s Maidan as a symbol in contemporary collective identity of Ukrainians.

On the territory of Poland, one can find numerous buildings, which became desolate as a result of the political transformation in 1989. Many have already been demolished to make room for new housing estates. Nevertheless, some still exist, and they are only visited by people specializing in their exploration. This article concerns these explorers, whose main goal is remembering the vanishing world. This world is vanishing for good right before our eyes. The article focuses on the similarities and differences between explorers. It also presents main ideas and principles of the movement, as well as the results of a recent stage of quantitative research.

Opis:
This paper attempts to show several aspects of relations between veganism and reducetarianism. It analyses current definitions of both practices with particular emphasis on the evolution of a definition of reducetarianism – from the practice of a reduction of meat's consumption to the practice of a reduction of consumption of animal products in general. Then, on a basis of reducetarian's publications, the depiction of vegans and veganism is analyzed. The article ends with a presentation of arguments for maintaining a two-element classification of dietary practices with regard to animal products: reducetarianism (a reduction of animal products without an intention of their exclusion) and veganism (a reduction with an intention of such an exclusion).

Opis:
The language of fire has sometimes been used in illustrative ways to describe how social movements spark, flare, and sometimes sputter out. Building on recent scholarship about protest camps, as well as borrowing language from environmental historians about fire behavior, this article draws from ethnographic research to describe the pyropolitics of the Indigenous-led anti-pipeline movement at Standing Rock-examining how fire was used as analogy and in material ways to support and drive the movement to protect water from industrial capitalism. Describing ceremonial fires, social fires, home fires, cooking fires, and fires lit in protest on the front line, this article details how fire was put to work in myriad ways in order to support the movement against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), and ensure social order and physical survival at the camps built to house supporters of the movement. This article concludes with descriptions of how these sparks ignited at Standing Rock followed activists home to their own communities, to other struggles that have been taken up to resist pipelines, the contamination of water, and the appropriation of Indigenous land.

social and religious movements of the Second Polish Republic
Opis:
The following article aims at showcasing the changes in the attitude of the Catholic Church towards various sects against the backdrop of the transformations in the Polish Upper Silesia. According to the Catholic Church, the existence of various sects contributed to the further destabilization of the world, already shaken by the events of World War I, and broke social order as well religious unity. For these reasons, apart from the obvious differences in dogma, the Church in the Polish Upper Silesia strongly opposed sectarian movements. The most effective way to counteract these perceived issues was, according to the Church, to discredit the sectarians in the eyes of the Catholic public. For that reason, the Catholic press published reports showing the devastating impact of sects on family life, vocational success or even personal happiness. However, in seeking help from the state, the Church had put itself in a precarious position, since the Church’s stance against the tolerant religious attitudes of the Second Polish Republic could have been perceived as nostalgia for the Prussian times and thus anti-patriotic. The principled position of the Catholic Church, as well as a desire to exclude other sects and the members of religious minorities from the Catholic ecclesiastical authority, created a precedent that promoted religious - and, in consequence, also social - intolerance. The right to a monopoly on spreading their ideology was a source of tension; however, that did not stop the process of social integration.
