    Opis:
    The article attempts to reinterpret Marian Pankowski’s literary project. The author that has been marginally present in Polish reception, read once again in the context of modern theo-ries and discourses reveals the maturity and timeliness of his themes, asking difficult ques-tions concerning the identity of man in the 20th century. The author of Matuga is interested in the very foundations of pre-modern world; he asks questions about the sense of religion, meaning of the traditionally perceived concept of nationality and ‘functionality’ of pre- Victorian model of morality. In the article author’s conviction, such artistic attitude was possible only due to constant existence between the home country and the exile, between East and West, due to some ‘world-being’ that enabled him to ask a reader some difficult questions about condition of the contemporary man, question missing in Polish literature at that time. The author of the article is also convinced that the most important and interesting cultural (and literary) processes always take place at the borderlands, where different cultures, genres and identities meet. Such notion is based on postcolonial theory by Edward Said.

    Pytania dotyczące istoty sztuki, powinności artysty oraz zasad procesu twórczego nurtowały wielu twórców okresu modernizmu. Urodzony w Pradze niemieckojęzyczny poeta Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) zmagał się z nimi przez całe życie. Analizując twórczość poetycką, prozatorską, eseistyczną, ale także dzienniki czykorespondencję poety, autorka artykułu stara się odpowiedzieć na pytanie, jak i czy zmieniał się obraz artysty i sztuki u Rilkego. Za przełomowy należy uznać tom zatytułowany Nowe wiersze z roku 1907, od którego Rilke zaczyna tworzyć tzw. poetykę rzeczy (Dingdichtung). Artysta przestaje być prorokiem, twórcą prawie równym Bogu. Jego zadaniem jest teraz służba sztuce nawet za cenę cierpienia i samotności, choroby i obłędu. Dzieło stworzone przez takiego artystę jest w pełni autonomiczne, samodzielne i pozwala na zbliżenie się do istoty rzeczy. Z kolei w konstrukcji powieści pt. Zapiski Maltego Lauridsa Brigge doszukać się można analogii do procesu twórczego. Na zakończenie pojawia się pytanie: na ile Rilke i jego rozumienie sztuki i powinności artysty wpisują się w proces mitologizacji artysty, którego apogeum przypada na przełom wieku XIX i XX?
    Für viele Künstler der Moderne gehörten die Fragen nach dem Wesen der Kunst, den Aufgaben des Künstlers und den Prinzipien des schöpferischen Prozesses zu den ganz wesentlichen. Den in Prag geborenen deutschsprachigen Dichter Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) beschäftigten sie sein ganzes Leben lang. Der Beitrag versucht der Frage nachzugehen, wie und ob sich das Bild des Künstlers und der Kunst bei Rilke im Laufe der Zeit verändert hat. Befragt werden dabei sowohl seine literarischen Werke (Lyrik, Prosa, Essays) als auch die Tagebücher und die private Korrespondenz. Einen Durchbruch markiert der Gedichtband Neue Gedichte aus dem Jahre 1907, mit dem Rilke die sog. Dingdichtung zu schaffen beginnt. Der Künstler hört auf, ein Prophet zu sein, der Gott fast ebenbürtig ist. Seine Aufgabe beruht jetzt darauf, der Kunst zu dienen, auch wenn der Preis dafür Leiden und Einsamkeit, Krankheit und Wahnsinn sein sollten. Das von so einem Künstler geschaffene Werk ist autonom und souverän und erlaubt es, dem Wesen der Dinge näher zu treten. In der Konstruktion des Romans Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge lässt sich wiederrum eine Analogie zu dem schöpferischen Prozess feststellen. Zum Schluss wird gefragt, inwiefern Rilkes Kunst- und Künstlerverständnis sich in den Prozess der Mythologisierung des Künstlers um die Jahrhundertwende einschreibt.
    Numerous modernist authors pondered on questions concerning the essence of art, the duty of the artist and the principles of the creative process. A German-language poet born in Prague, Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) spent his lifetime trying to cope with these questions. By means of an analysis of his poetry, prose, and essays, but also diaries and correspondence, the author of this article endeavours to answer the question whether and how the image of the artist and art has been evolving in Rilke’s work. His volume from 1907, entitled New Poems, ought to be considered the groundbreaking one, as from this volume on Rilke begins to create the so-called poetry of things (Dingdichtung). The artist ceases to be a prophet, or a creator almost equal to God. His duty now is serving art, even at the price of suffering and loneliness, illness and insanity. The work created by such an artist is fully independent and unassisted; it makes it possible to get closer to the essence of things. In turn, in the structure of a novel entitled The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge, one can trace an analogy to the creative process. Finally, a question is posed to what extent Rilke, and his understanding of art and the duty of the artist contribute to the process of mythologising the artist, whose high point is identified at the turn of the 19th and the 20th centuries.
