The author analyzes the contribution of the Romanian Polonists to studying Polish literature on the basis of theories and methodologies that are characteristic of comparative studies, developed within the Romanian area (T. Vianu, Al. Dima, G. Calinescu, N. Manolescu). Thanks to the comparative method, Romanian specialists have extended their interpreting perspective by voicing original ideas on motifs, themes, influences, parallelisms etc. that are present in the works of Polish and Romanian writers. Special attention has been granted to comparative studies about Mickiewicz – Asachi, Sienkiewicz – Sadoveanu, Reymont – Re-breanu. In conclusion, the comparative method becomes a basic tool in the critical approach of foreign Polonists.

Opis:
Contemporary cultural changes force Polish literary critics to constantly change their views on literature. Traditional literary canon is prone to stagnation and inertia, but multiculturalism may lead to a dangerous melting in the multiplied maze of cultural interconnections. Trying to overcome such antinomies, the author of the article focuses on the criteria that are important in the reception of Polish culture abroad. Literary canon is not regarded as a standard, but it is worth taking into consideration as an exposition of some general aesthetic, axio- logical and worldview changes.

Opis:
Developments that have been observed in the last decades (globalisation, postmodernism, postcolonialism) have influenced changes in European critical discourse and brought cultural phenomena to the fore. One of the consequences of this new postcolonial consciousness is the challenging of the 19th century concept of Weltliteratur, which is based on Western European tradition. The author of the article refers to the postcolonial writings of E. Said, G.Ch. Spivak and H.K. Bhabhy as well as the concept of cultural dialogue by H. Gadamer, E. Levinas, P. Ricoeur and regards Polish contemporary literature from the perspective of Western research where the traditional, Platonian model of European culture as being a universal culture, is replaced by a dynamic, intercultural interaction. Confronting “homeliness” with “foreigness” produces less narrow assessments. Hierarchies and conditions disappear here and common cultural experience seems to be most important.

The article is dedicated to the comparative analysis of the Islamic legal culture and the Western legal culture. The article points out to the differences of those legal cultures and tries to find their roots. The author considers this problem in several basic contexts: the sources of law, the variability of law, the obligation of submission to law, the limits of legal system, the relation of law to morality, the functions which are attributed to law and the role of religion in public space. The paper examines each of them penetratingly. With reference to the author’s viewpoint, a prime difference between the Islamic and the Western legal cultures comes down to the number of normative systems possible to single out while examining the former or the latter. According to the text, in the Islamic legal culture there exists one universal normative system which includes legal rules as well as moral standards, unwritten laws, courtesy instructions, etc. On the other hand, the Western legal culture is characterized by strict separation between legal rules and other standards which belong to morality or customs. At the end of the article the author attempts to formulate a standpoint referring to the future of the Islamic and the Western legal cultures.

The subject of this analysis is the Polish translation of the work Kappa, also known in Poland under the title In the land of Aquarius, made by Mikołaj Melanowicz. The story shows a phantasmagoric visit to the strange country (peopled by anthropomorphic creatures) and some sober observations of this disturbingly atypical land made by the main character. Due to the multitude of culturally recognizable themes referring to the history of Gulliver, the work bears remarkable signs of anti-utopia. My analysis takes on the themes of the story that are important from the point of view of this branch of philosophy and on its symbolic dimension with its immersion in the tradition of Japanese aesthetics. Basing my interpretation on the critical revision of the basic assumptions of the Japanese aesthetics school and on the close reading of the two surfaces of the work (literal and symbolic), I consider how the text functions in a philosophical way. The article focuses both on the literally aesthetic level of expression (descriptions of the presented world) as well as on the aesthetics of narration and the way of constructing the text. Historia opowiada o fantasmagorycznej wizycie w kraju antropomorficznych istot oraz o trzeźwych obserwacjach niepokojąco nietypowej krainy czynionych przez głównego bohatera. Ze względu na mnogość rozpoznawalnych kulturowo wątków nawiązujących do historii o Guliwerze, utwór nosi znamiona antyutopii. Moja analiza podejmuje wątki opowiadania istotne z punktu widzenia tej gałęzi filozofii oraz jego symboliczny wymiar z jego zanurzeniem w tradycji japońskiej estetyki. Svijet u kojem živimo čini se stvoren za komparatističko‑traduktološka istraživanja. U humanistici i na području filoloških znanosti događa se prava revolucija, promjena sustava, uopće završava jedna era u povijesti civilizacije, počinje nova, digitalna epoha. Mijenjaju se dosadašnje metode istraživanja i predmet istraživanja. S jedne je strane književnost izgubila dosadašnju, visoku poziciju u društvu i zato nova formula komparatistike ne može se ograničavati na književnost ili na kulturu nego mora uzimati u obzir izvanumjetnička polja ljudske aktivnosti; filološki studij ako želi opstati ne može više biti književno i tekstocentričan. S druge strane doba Interneta i globalizacije, munjevite komunikacije, transkulturnog društva ne može funkcionirati bez prevođenja koje je najbolji način da se različite kulture zaista upoznaju i uzajamno obogate. Ovaj prostor između kultura i jezika, granična zona, koja implicira višeperspektivnost, čini se najprimjerenija za neofilološki studij i istraživanja.
The world we live in seems to be created for comparative-translation studies. There is real revolution, the change of system in the humanities and philology studies; there is the end of one world and the beginning of new digital era. Research methods and research themes are changing. On the one hand literature has lost its position in society and this is why a new formula of comparative studies cannot be limited to literature or culture but comparative studies must take into account non-artistic spheres of man’s activity; philology studies, if they want to survive, cannot be limited to exclusively literary, text oriented studies. On the other hand age of Internet, globalization, communication, transcultural society cannot function without translation which is the best way to get to know other cultures and enrich each other. The space between culture and languages, border zone which implies multiperspectivism seems to be the most appropriate for neo-philology studies and research.

The article’s aim is to reflect upon the transgenerational and transnational sustainability of Central European memory in literary and cultural space of South Africa. It also investigates links between John Maxwell Coetzee’s oeuvre, as well as works by other South African authors (e.g. Dan Jacobson, Lionel Abrahams, Deborah Levy), with cultural and, above all, literary universe of Central Europe. While analysing selected literary and cultural texts (among others, hitherto unpublished archival documents), the author points to the fact that the Nobel laureate’s consistently and programmatically displayed interest in Central Europe ought to be considered within a wider context of systematic and creative “dialogue” with Central Europe which has been carried out by writers and artists from South Africa in the 20th and 21st centuries. The present study is an original attempt at capturing the phenomenon of mutual cultural flows and horizontal exchange taking place between some minor literatures (and cultures), in this case: South African and Central European.

W dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym, zanim rozwinęła się komparatystyka literacka, najważniejsi polscy pisarze byli ujmowani na Węgrzech w ramach kanonu literatury światowej. W wielkiej syntezie Mihálya Babitsa pt. Az europai irodalom története [Historia literatury europejskiej] znajdziemy tylko nazwiska Adama Mickiewicza i Henryka Sienkiewicza (bez tytułów ich utworów), bo Babits dzieli literatury poszczególnych narodów na „wielkie” i „małe”, a te ostatnie ma reprezentować literatura tak polska, jak i węgierska. Autor nadal popularnej A világirodalom története [Historia literatury światowej], Antal Szerb, w osobnym podrozdziale kompetentnie scharakteryzował romantyzm polski i krótko podsumował epoki wcześniejsze. Jego zdaniem rozwój iteratury polskiej i węgierskiej jest paralelny. W epoce odrodzenia w obu krajach powstaje poezja w języku narodowym na najwyższym poziomie.Szerbchwali psalmy Jana Kochanowskiego i Bálinta Balassiego, zwraca uwagę na postać Adama Czahrowskiego, który odegrał ważną rolę w polsko-węgierskich kontaktach literackich. Autor podsunął kilka interesujących pomysłów do badań komparatystycznych. Warto byłoby np. porównać Mikołaja Doświadczyńskiego przypadki Ignacego Krasickiego z Tarimenes utazása [Podróż Tarimenesa] Györgya Bessenyeigeo. Był przekonany nie tylko o tym, że pewne epoki i poszczególni twórcy są „zdumiewająco podobni”, lecz także o tym, że cała historia obu literatur jest budowana na podobnych zasadach. Z kolei w następnych dekadach zbierano materiał faktograficzny i dane dotyczące polsko-węgierskich kontaktów literackich w duchu pozytywistycznej nauki o literaturze oraz skupiano się na recepcji i imagologii. Dzięki wieloletniej i systematycznej pracy Endre Bojtára powstała w Instytucie Badań Literackich Węgierskiej Akademii Nauk (WAN) komparatystyka środkowoeuropejska. Badacz przyczynił się do zmiany paradygmatu: między literaturą światową a węgierską pojawiła się nowa kategoria – Europa Środkowa. Profesor Bojtár nauczył się kilku języków regionu (obok słowiańskich także bałtyckich). Napisał monografie o środkowo-wschodnioeuropejskiej awangardzie, a następnie o oświeceniu i romantyzmie w literaturach regionu. Również György Spiró zajmował się komparatystyką regionalną. Opracował historię dramatu „od oświecenia do syntezy Wyspiańskiego”, która po transformacji ustrojowej jednak straciła na znaczeniu, a większość historyków literatury wróciła do komparatystyki bilateralnej. W latach 80. czołowi prozaicy węgierscy, tacy jak Péter Esterházy czy Péter Nádas, pilnie czytali i komentowali utwory m.in. Witolda Gombrowicza, natomiast młodsze pokolenie straciło kontakt z literaturą polską.
In the interwar period (1918–1939), prior to the development of the comparative literature discipline, the most important Polish authors would be included in the canon of world literature in studies published in Hungary. Mihály Babits’s great synthesis, Az európai irodalom története [History of European Literature], only includes the names of Adam Mickiewicz and Henryk Sienkiewicz (without stating the titles of their works), because Babits divided the individual national literatures into “major” and “minor” ones, and considered both Polish and Hungarian literature to belong to the latter group. In turn, Antal Szerb, author of the still popular A világirodalom története [History of World Literature], described Polish Romanticism competently in a separate subsection and provided a brief summary of the earlier periods. In his opinion, Polish and Hungarian literature developed parallel to each other, and during the Renaissance both literatures produced poetry at the highest level in the respective national languages. The researcher was convinced that not only were certain periods and individual authors “astonishingly similar”, but that the entire history of both literatures was built on similar principles. In the following decades, data was collected on Polish-Hungarian contacts, focusing on reception and imagology. Factual material was collected confirming Polish-Hungarian literary contacts in the spirit of positivist literary science. Thanks to Endre Bojtár’s many years of systematic work, Central European comparative literature established itself at the Institute for Literary Studies of Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Bojtár contributed to a paradigm shift, with a new category of Central European literature emerging between world literature and Hungarian literature. Another researcher, György Spiró, also worked in the field of regional comparative literature, and compiled a history of drama “from the Enlightenment to Wyspiański’s synthesis”. Not so long ago, in the 1980s, leading Hungarian prose writers such as Péter Esterházy and Péter Nádas, avidly read and commented on the works of Witold Gombrowicz, among others, but subsequent generations lost contact with Polish literature.

ZangariUniversity of MilanItaly“Things Change but the Amerecano Is Here to Stay”: America in Italian Popular Movies of the 1980sThe article focuses on a number of film comedies of the early 1980s. In different ways, the movies rearticulate the relationship between Italy and the United States. In showing how Italians can beat Americans at sports, how they can indulge in conspicuous consumption and finally how even the United States are not alien to provincialism and backwardness, these movies express a new mood of confidence that was widely felt in Italian society at the time. However, these movies came at a moment when the Italian film industry was on the verge of its decline. Starting from the 1980s, in fact, American movies and distributors would colonize the Italian movie market and depress the Italian movie industry.

Opis:
Vo svojom príspevku pod titulom Jozef Marušiak — prekladateľ — komparatista ideálny? autorka Marta Buczek sa zaoberá problémom nevyhnutných vzťahov súčasnej novej komparatistiky a translatolgie. Predložená v príspevku teória súčasnej komparatistiky a translatologie dokazuje, že sú to discipliny vzajomne spojené predmetom výskumu. Predmet záujmu komparatistiky sa zhoduje s rozsahom záujmu výskumu prekladu. Posun smerom k komparatistickému vnímaniu prekladu upozornil na tvorivú úlohu prekladov a tvorivú úlohu prekladateľa v kultúre a literatúre. V ďalšej časti príspevku autorka analyzuje prekladateľskú čínnosť známeho slovenského prekladateľa poľskej literatúry — Jozefa Marušiaka. Odpovedá na otázku, kto je komparatista ideálny, a čí možno slovenského prekladateľa predpokladať za komparatistu ideálneho.
In the article under the title Jozef Marušiak — the translator — the prefect comparatist? the author Marta Buczek raises the problem of necessary relationships between new Comparative Studies and Translation Studies. The theory of Comparative Studies and Translation Studies presented in this paper shows that that disciplines are closely connected to each other by the subject of research. The subject of interest of the Comparative Studies is consistent with the interest of research in Translation Studies. Turning towards comparative perception of the translation has focused its attention on the creative role of translation in the culture and the creative role of the translator. In the next part of the article the author analyzes the translation activity of well known Slovak translator of Polish literature — Jozef Marušiak. The author answers the question, who is the perfect comparatist and if the Slovak translator can be assumed for the perfect comparatist.

Giorgio MarianiUniversità “Sapienza” di RomaItalyHugo Pratt’s and Milo Manara’s Indian Summer: An Italian “Source” for The Scarlet LetterThis paper examines the allusions of Milo Manara’s and Hugo Pratt’s graphic novel, Tutto ricominciò con un’estate indiana (Indian Summer), to Hawthorne’s novel The Scarlett Letter in a variety of ways. In particular, this paper argues that not only some of Pratt and Manara’s characters are very liberal, creative reinventions of Hawthorne’s figures-they might be seen as “spin-offs” of Hawthorne’s narrative-but in many ways Indian Summer is also thematically close to The Scarlet Letter.
