    For the residents of Cieszyn Silesia, especially Czech, the establishment of national boundaries along the course of the Olza River in 1920, meant that they had to form a new picture of the world and determine their own place in the community, which also had to be redefined. For Zaolzie residents, the process of constructing their own identity depends on mechanisms of competition, negotiation and power (media, education and administration). It also is a consequence of the recognition of the boundary as something natural and “ever” existent. The clash of different self-identifications is seen on the symbolic level, especially linguistic.

    The multidimensionality and multifacetedness of relations between residents and the area they inhabit in the form of regionalism, as well as the activities of organizations aimed at the development of pro-regional attitudes have found themselves in the field of interest of various scholarly disciplines, including geography. Roman Matykowski’s aim in this article is to examine this phenomenon from the perspective of geography, which in various periods of its development also used the achievements of other disciplines (e.g., sociology). In the second part his article, Matykowski uses the perspective of social geography to present selected results of his research on the specific regionalism in Cieszyn Silesia.

    The article is an attempt to reconstruct the image of Cieszyn Silesia contained in the works of Jan Szczepański. The author presents the most important elements of the image of Silesia (the Polish part of Silesia, i.e. the Silesian Voivodeship at that time) drawn by Szczepański in the interwar period, and the image of Cieszyn Silesia in the post-war period. In his opinion, the essence of Silesian reality is conflict and struggle. Treating Cieszyn Silesia as a borderland area with a strongly outlined cultural, religious (Protestant) and aesthetic distinctiveness, he argues about its Polishness, emphasizing that it is a misunderstood region in Poland. The author believes that in Jan Szczepański’s deliberations on Cieszyn Silesia, it is not possible to identify a clear “thinking style”, while Szczepański’s way of thinking about Cieszyn Silesia, despite its fragmentary nature and many understatements, is part of the two most important research paradigms identified in the sociology of Silesia: borderland and multiculturalism.

    In her article, Katarzyna Szkaradnik analyses the memoirs of the pioneers of the Polish national movement in the area of Cieszyn Silesia, and also the memoirs of subsequent social, cultural, and educational activists written before the end of World War I. Szkaradnik examines these texts by focusing on the representations of the idea which the authors were spokesmen for, i.e., Polishness as a cultural legacy as well as Poland as a promised land where the people of Cieszyn Silesiawill gain due rights. The metaphors “awakening” and “rebirth” naturalized the bond between these people and Polishness, which was supposed to last thanks to, among other things, Polish religious publications, despite Silesia’s separation from so-called Motherland. In this respect, the memoirs have persuasive-didactic functions in that they help to build and strengthen the national identity. Szkaradnik examines the rhetorical strategies used by the activists (and scholars) of the said movement as well as the system of values which they propagate. The fact of the national activists’ being servants of an ideology is accompanied by their ideology of service, akin to the positivist idea of educational and economic work. Importantly, most of the authors descended from local people of humble origin and they gave up on the chance of social advancement in order to help their countrymates to attain social, political, and intellectual emancipation.

    There are places where the ecumenical movement is born and grows out of the very essence of social and cultural reality. Cieszyn Silesia belongs to one of such places. Situated on the meeting point of various nationalities, cultures, and Churches, it constitutes a border region in a literal and symbolic sense. This region has become the home for the largest population of the Lutherans in Poland. The ecumenical movement which has been born and developed here is a necessary and inevitable consequence of such coexistence of Churches — the Roman Catholic Church and the Lutheran. Both Churches have become symbols of ecumenical life based on faith, tolerance, experience and respect. Nowadays all of these factors create a modern ecumenism. Ecumenism in Cieszyn Silesia has a very long and rich history. The phenomenon of Churches’ coexistence appeared almost five centuries ago. It means that the ecumenical movement had existed here long before the Catholic Church promulgated the encyclical Ut unum sint. On the basis of the examples of the ecumenical relationships mentioned in the article, it can be said that the look of the “wise” today at its “yesterday” helps to build a better “tomorrow”. Therefore it can be said that on the basis of a well-lived present, firmly rooted in history, rises a favourable hope for the future of the Church. Presenting the reception of John Paul’s II Ut unum sint among the multi-denominational population of Cieszyn Silesia one could quote Reverend Professor Wacław Hryniewicz, one of the most remarkable Polish ecumenists: “An authentic reception can be achieved only when the partners differ from each other because diversity enables the true relation of giving and taking.”

    The situation of Zaolzie, a historical and geographical part of Cieszyn Silesia, is complicated. Despite the years of appurtenance to Czechia and Chechoslovakia there is still active Polish residence and both nations continue to share their history. In this article I intend to show the tense Polish-Czech relationship in Zaolzie presented in Dziennik. Zapiski bibliofila i dziejopisa 1963–1995 by Jerzy Pilch, a writer and essayist from Ustroń. This will be shown in the context of local memory and activist memory stressing the Polishness of the region. It will be possible to analyze how the ideological dimension of the identity is interwoven with an effort to bring about a narrative restoration of Zaolzie, divided by an arbitrary border.

    Łukasz Wróblewski’s article is theoretical-empirical in character. In the first part, he focuses on a relatively recent and as yet underresearched category, that of the cross-border market. From the existing definitions of the market, Wróblewski derives a definition of the cross-border market of cultural services. He goes on to discuss the historical conditions of the creation of this market in the Cieszyn Silesia-Těšín Slezsko area. Next, he discusses the structure and specificity of the cross-border cultural product (CBCP). In the third part of the article, Wróblewski examines in detail the levels and nature of cooperation in the process of creating CBCP on the cross-border market of Cieszyn Silesia. He points out that local, regional, and Euroregional organizations and central authorities of the countries sharing the border are involved in the process of creating cultural products on the cross-border market.

    This article is devoted to an interest in local folk culture, regional heritage, and the past of Cieszyn Silesia, as well as to methods extending back through the 19th century for the documentation, popularization, and protection of the unique cultural knowledge of the region. Attention is primarily given to the activities of the Cieszyn Silesians themselves. The author examines multiple sources, including local periodicals, for elements of local culture (folklore, dialects, traditional outfits, customs). He tries to capture how the phenomena of cultural heritage is defined both regionally and nationally, and also how it can be used as a resource in tourism and in broadly-understood identity policy.

    In the article the subject of attention is the comm unication strategies of pupils in schools with Polish as the language of instruction in the Czech part of Cieszyn Silesia. The pupils know more than one language code – at a minimum, th e local dialect, Polish and Czech, and they alternating between these codes in linguistic communication daily. The article presents excerpts from interviews with these pupils conducte d by the authors (and researchers), in which the causes, methods and consequences of such specific communication strategies are revealed. The main triggers of code changes were found to be mainly changes of conversation topics and changes in the language of communication partners. The article also touches upon other issues: the conceptualization of the wor ld through traditional dialect, the utility of dialects in the contemporary world of technological, scientific and cultural progress and the emergence of mixed supranational spoken languages, etc.

    Cieszyn Silesia is a region which occupies both sides of the current Czech-Polish border. However, in the past, for many centuries it constituted a cohesive administrative unit belonging to Poland, Czech and Austria. After the I World War, Europe saw the formation or rebirth of several nations, such as Czechoslovakia and Poland. At that time, the region in question presented a rich cultural mosaic, even though the majority of the inhabitants were of Polish descent. The region was dedicated primarily to heavy engineering and coal mining.At the end of 1918, a conflict arose between the First Republic and the Second Polish Republic for this patch of Silesia, which ended with the decree of the Council of Ambassadors of 28 July 1920, ordering the division of the disputed area along the Olza river. The authorities in Warsaw did not come to terms with this verdict, and for a few months they entertained the prospect of regaining the land west of the Olza. The Czechoslovak government, in turn, carefully observed at the actions of its northern neighbour, while its agents sent reports to Prague about the current situation. The relations between the two countries had not stabilized until 1922.

    The reviewed book details the fifty-year-long activity of the Folkloristic Section (Sekcja Folklorystyczna) (later transformed into the Ethnological Section [Sekcja Etnograficzna]) and the Regional History Section of the Polish Cultural-Educational Union (Polski Związek Kulturalno-Oświatowy). It is aimed mainly at persons interested in the region of Zaolzie, yet some of the texts may also be referred to as a supplementary material by researchers undertaking broader subjects, such as the operation of national minorities’ associations in communist states, or “from below” visions of regional history.

    Euroregion to forma współpracy transgranicznej pomiędzy regionami państw członkowskich Unii Europejskiej, państw kandydujących oraz ich sąsiadów. Na terytorium Polski współpracę transgraniczną podjęto w ramach 16 euroregionów. W obrębie województwa śląskiego funkcjonują trzy: Euroregion Silesia, Euroregion Śląsk Cieszyński oraz Euroregion Beskidy. W artykule analizie zostały poddane działania bibliotek publicznych z gmin przynależących do poszczególnych euroregionów w województwie śląskim. Przedstawione zostały projekty kulturalne i edukacyjne podejmowane przez biblitoteki w ramach współpracy euroregionalnej.
    A Euroregion is a form of cross-border cooperation between the regions of the EU Member States, candidate countries and their neighbours. On the Polish territory, cross-border cooperation has been taken within sixteen Euroregions. In the Silesia province there are three: Euroregion Silesia, Cieszyn Silesia Euroregion and Beskidy Euroregion. The article presents the analysis of the activities of public libraries in municipalities belonging to the different Euroregions in Silesia. Cultural and educational projects undertaken by the libriaries under the euroregional cooperation programme are discussed.

    Publikacje regionalne, media i prasa oddziałują na społeczności lokalne, pełniąc tym samym, poza przekazywaniem informacji, szereg różnych funkcji. Ze względu na rozwój Internetu zakres ich działania został poszerzony i uzupełniony o nowe możliwości. W artykule opisano podstawowe cele mediów lokalnych, pokazano również szanse, jakie daje przestrzeń sieciowa. Okazuje się, że niekoniecznie jest ona zagrożeniem dla książek w tradycyjnej formie, może także służyć do ich promowania, podejmowania dyskusji, weryfikowania faktów. Nowoczesne rozwiązania pozytywnie wpływają na odbiór publikacji przez potencjalnych czytelników. W artykule opisany został portal gazetacodzienna.pl – Śląsk Cieszyński online oraz część prezentowanych tam książek o tematyce regionalnej.
    Regional publications, the media and the press influence local communities, thus performing a number of various tasks apart from the task of transmitting information. Due to the development of the internet, the range of their activities was extended and supplemented with new possibilities, which influenced the functions which were heretofore realised. The article describes the basic purposes of the local media, it also demonstrates the opportunities provided by the space of the internet. It turns out that this space is not necessarily a threat to the traditional forms of the book but an incentive to use them, to engage in discussion, to verify the facts that are provided. Modern solutions positively influence the reception of publications by potential readers. On the basis of general information and the functions which were adduced, one described the portal gazetacodzienna.pl – Śląsk Cieszyński online and a part of the regional-themed books which are promoted by this portal.

    Opis:
    The academic center of ethnological research in Cieszyn has a clearly defined profile, which distinguishes it from other centers of this kind in Poland. Its specificity results primarily from the research interests of the staff, which focus on the issues of cultural and ethnic borderlands and on contemporary socio-cultural transformations, including the role of tradition in the life of postmodern communities. The rich and multifaceted achievements over the past twenty-five years of the center’s operation can be seen as an obligation on the part of the researchers encouraging them to make further consistent efforts to consolidate its position on the map of ethnological studies in Poland, to make their research more effective, and to enhance and broaden international cooperation. A materialization of the idea of creating a permanent ethnological research institution in Silesia, the center plays an important and admittedly unique role in integrating research on cultural phenomena and processes in Central Europe.
