    Migration and emigration processes have always had and continue to have a significant impact on the socioeconomic and political situation of the whole world. The Zaporizhia Oblast will serve as an example of a multicultural area of Ukraine, as an attractive area for many newcomers since the 15th century. The multicultural borderlands of south¬ eastern Ukraine discussed in the paper are to demonstrate the influence of migration processes on the formation of individual identity, including in particular Polish identity. Nowadays, many in-habitants of the studied area are unable to clearly define their cultural identity.

    Experience of living in borderlands is the most important Upper Silesian experience. Com-plicated geopolitical situation affects on Silesian history, local inhabitants’ identity, specific character of this place (periphery complex, pressure of ideological and cultural centres versus everyday relations with the Other, who often is homely and who is different from stereo-types disseminated by ideological centres are experienced here). Upper Silesia had to – and still has to – struggle with typical borderlands’ problems such as: borders’ inconstancy, feel-ing of homeliness, everyday relations with the Others, extreme ideologization, danger, fear, multiculturalism, other culture’s remains even after a resettlements and emigrations. All these problems are a great theme in literature about Upper Silesia, which is trying to describe and understand inconstancy and tragedy of the borderland.

    The paper discusses the representation of the so-called Regained Territories in reportage and novels by Ziemowit Szczerek. The aim of the paper is to identify the ways of creating a caricatural imaginary geography of the Polish-German borderlands which Szczerek calls “Poniemiecja” [“Post-German lands”]. An analysis of the source material made it possible to determine the functions of the borderlands theme in Szczerek’s works (demythologisation, deheroisation, confrontation). The paper also presents strategies of revising the pioneer myth of the so-called Regained Territories and of representing the Polish-German relations in Szczerek’s works of fiction and non- fiction.

    The article is devoted to Leo Lipski’s short story, entitled “Miasteczko” [“A Small Town”], while its argument focuses on the traces and figures of subjectivity, yet those departing from the classical readings. Moreover, this text connects them with the issues of spectral transmission and prosthetic memory, visible in Lipski’s phantasmatic description of the eponymous small town. It is shown that the relation between experience (also a traumatic one), narration, and the linguisticstructure of subjectivity can be rethought in Lipski’s works by means of memory studies, and Maria Török and Nicolas Abraham’s psychoanalytical theory.
    Artykuł stanowi próbę interpretacji opowiadania Leo Lipskiego zatytułowanego Miasteczko.  Autor skupia się na śladach i figurach podmiotowości, które różnią się od tych tradycyjnie wskazywanych w dziele Lipskiego, a także łączy je z wątkami przekazu fantomowego i pamięci protetycznej, które ujawniają się w dokonywanym przez Lipskiego fantazmatycznym przedstawieniu kresowej osady. Autor projektuje ponowne przemyślenie relacji między doświadczeniem (również: doświadczeniem traumatycznym), narracją i językową strukturą podmiotowości w tekstach Leo Lipskiego, wykorzystując w tym celu narzędzia zaczerpnięte z myśli psychoanalitycznej Marii Török i Nicolasa Abrahama oraz ze studiów nad pamięcią.

    The Nowogródek i okolice [Nowogródek and environs] tourist guide by Józef Żmigrodzki occasionally reveals some phonetic features typical for North-Eastern Borderlands Polish (rznięty, najprzód, szkarpa), peculiar noun inflections (uczni, soft instead of hard adjectival stem – bezleśni), peculiar adjectival and adverbial gradation forms (najpamiętniejszy, najkonieczniejszy, szczególniej), emphasising word using the -ż particle (temuż). Typical word formation features include the adverbial suffix -o instead of -’e (zaledwo) and 23 peculiar prefixed verbs (e.g. pobudować – zbudować ). Syntax features present in the work include a total of 6 language structures: adjective/participle predicate in the locative instead of nominative case (2), historic non-compound form of the passive participle in the predicate (1), verbs governing unusual cases (3). Word material is much more abundant, with 63 single lexical units, 6 peculiar phrases and 1 peculiar expression.The text of Żmigrodzki’s book undoubtedly bears witness to the North-Eastern Borderlands heritage of its author. Other interwar writings originating from the North-Eastern Borderlands should be the subject of linguistic studies as well.

    The article attempts to reinterpret Marian Pankowski’s literary project. The author that has been marginally present in Polish reception, read once again in the context of modern theo-ries and discourses reveals the maturity and timeliness of his themes, asking difficult ques-tions concerning the identity of man in the 20th century. The author of Matuga is interested in the very foundations of pre-modern world; he asks questions about the sense of religion, meaning of the traditionally perceived concept of nationality and ‘functionality’ of pre- Victorian model of morality. In the article author’s conviction, such artistic attitude was possible only due to constant existence between the home country and the exile, between East and West, due to some ‘world-being’ that enabled him to ask a reader some difficult questions about condition of the contemporary man, question missing in Polish literature at that time. The author of the article is also convinced that the most important and interesting cultural (and literary) processes always take place at the borderlands, where different cultures, genres and identities meet. Such notion is based on postcolonial theory by Edward Said.

    In diesem Artikel werden ausgewählte Beiträge mit gegenwärtigen Geschichtsnarrativen zu den oberschlesischen Auswanderern nach Texas im 19. Jahrhundert, den sog. Silesian Texans, vorgestellt und besprochen. Dabei werden die darin vorkommenden Zuschreibungen von nationalen Kategorien hinsichtlich der Identität, Sprache, kulturellen und ortsgebundenen Herkunft kritisch hinterfragt. Die dabei verwendete Methode ist die komparatistische Imagologie nach dem „Aachener Programm“. Diese eignet sich in besonderer Weise für derartige Untersuchungen in transnationalen Gebieten wie Oberschlesien und ihren Überseeformen in Texas, USA. Die angeführten Quellen aus den letzten drei Jahrzehnten werden neuesten wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen hinsichtlich der Forschung zu den Silesian Texans wie auch der (ober)schlesischen Sprache gegenübergestellt. Der Artikel kann als Bestandaufnahme aktueller Quellen zum Phänomen der Silesian Texans wie auch als ihre kritische Besprechung verstanden werden. In der Untersuchung werden historische Fehler und Anachronismen in den Geschichtsnarrativen aufgezeigt, in denen die Herkunftsregion der Silesian Texans nicht ihrem Charakter als ein Grenzgebiet entsprechend, weder multikulturell noch transnational wahrgenommen wird.
     In this article, selected contemporary historical articles with narratives about the Upper Silesian emigrants to Texas in the 19th century, the so-called Silesian Texans, are cited and discussed. The attributions of national categories with regard to identity, language, cultural and local origin are critically examined. The method used is comparative imagology according to the “Aachener Programm”. This is especially suitable for alike studies in transnational areas such as Upper Silesia and its oversea diaspora in Texas, USA. The cited sources of the last three decades are contrasted with the latest scholarly findings regarding research on the Silesian Texans, as well as the (Upper) Silesian language itself. This article can be seen as a survey of current sources on the phenomenon of the Silesian Texans, as well as a critical discussion of them. The study highlights historical errors and anachronisms in historical narratives in which the Silesian Texans’ region of origin is perceived as neither multicultural nor transnational according to its character as a borderland.
    W niniejszym tekście przedstawiono i omówiono wybrane artykuły ze współczesnymi narracjami historycznymi na temat górnośląskich emigrantów do Teksasu w XIX wieku, tzw. śląskich Teksańczyków/Silesian Texans. Krytycznej analizie poddane zostały występujące w nich atrybucje kategorii narodowych w odniesieniu do tożsamości, języka, pochodzenia kulturowego i miejsca. Zastosowana metoda to imagologia porównawcza według „Aachener Programm/Programu z Akwizgranu”. Jest ona szczególnie przydatna do tego typu badań na obszarach transnarodowych, takich jak Górny Śląsk i jego zamorskie formy w Teksasie w USA. Przytoczone źródła z ostatnich trzech dekad są zestawione z najnowszymi wynikami badań nad śląskimi Teksańczykami, jak również nad językiem (górno) śląskim. Artykuł można traktować jako przegląd aktualnych źródeł na temat fenomenu śląskich Teksańczyków, jak również ich krytyczną dyskusję. Studium wskazuje na błędy historyczne i anachronizmy w narracjach historycznych, w których region pochodzenia śląskich Teksańczyków nie jest postrzegany zgodnie z jego charakterem jako region pogranicza, zatem ani jako region wielokulturowy, ani transnarodowy.
