Carlo MartinezUniversità “G. d’Annunzio” di Chieti-Pescara, Italy “The thin delights of moonshine and romance”: Romance, Tourism, and Realism in Hawthorne’s The Marble Faun Abstract: Hawthorne’s involvement with the logic of the tourism of his day is a key aspect of his development as a fiction writer. Starting from a discussion of the early sketch “My Visit to Niagara” the article argues that the discourse of tourism, with its protocols and practices, is for Hawthorne a fertile breeding ground and conceptual framework for the elaboration of a new rationale and a new aesthetic for the fiction writing he calls “romance.” It then explores how tourism resonates in the romance which takes it as its central thematic concern: The Marble Faun. Hawthorne’s last completed long work of fiction represents a moment of artistic and personal crisis for the author, who finds his notion of romance writing caught in a sort of double bind created by the touristic nature of his stay in Italy. As the plot of the novel suggests, in his efforts to extricate himself from the situation, Hawthorne, envisioned and experimented with a new kind of writing that led him to revise and alter radically the romance form he had previously elaborated in favor of a much more realistic style of fiction. The aim of the article is to interpret Ignacy Karpowicz’s novel Balladyny i romanse in the context of romantic literature. The concept of romantic irony becomes the main theme and here in this article it distinguishes, in Karpowicz’s work, the aesthetic features that are characteristic of such romantic texts as Balladyna or Beniowski by Juliusz Słowacki. The contradictions that are characteristic of romantic irony in Karpowicz’s novel exist as a process of creating and destroying, where interweaving and complicating cultures and orders result in creating a chaotic but deliberate reality. The digressive character of the novel, metaliterary reflections and selfreference, reveal the author’s attitude to the creative process as an intellectual, romantic and ironic game.

One of the most common clichés of our culture defines Judaism as the “religion of the Father.” For some this is just a neutral description referring to the fatherly aspect of the JewishGod; for others this is the very epitome of the patriarchal prejudice which privileges the masculine Father Figure at the expense of everything maternal. In my essay, however, I would like to challenge this staple association, by pointing to the simple fact that Jews themselves very rarely – if ever – describe their religion in openly patriarchal terms. In fact, when described in psychoanalytic terms, the role of the Father is here merely transitory: he is to inaugurate a series of subsequent detachments, starting from the disintegration of the first bonds of love (to maternal body and, more generally, to the body of nature) and ending with the complete neutralisation of the “family romance.” The Father Figure, therefore, is called upon only to counteract the power of the primordial “attachments” and initiate a process of separation which will allow the subject to establish himself as a free and mature moral agent, truly “born” into the world.

The paper contains some partial findings of a comparative research on the chivalry romance Buovo d’Antona as printed in Bologna and in Venice in the 1480s in a number of different, yet quite similar one to another, incunables; and its ottava rima adaptation in yiddish-taytsh, made by Elye Bokher (Elia Levita) in Padua around 1507, and then published as Bovo-Buch in Isny, Württemberg, as late as 1541. Respectively, the narratives implicitly deliver two different ideologies, meant as consequent sets of socially shared convictions about the good living. In particular, the place of women in society and the family, or better said, the male representation thereof, substantially differs in the Yiddish adaptation compared to the Venetian original.

The article considers circumstances contributing to the readership success of the Polish translation of The Goffredo… The author advances a thesis that the narrative poem in question met the expectations of Polish audience having been previously kindled not so much by Andrzej Kochanowski’s translation of The Aeneid, but rather by Polonized versions of mediaeval chivalric romances (Historja o cesarzu Otonie, Historia o Magielonie, Historia wdzięczna […] o Meluzynie). They gave the Polish readers their first chance to acquaint themselves with high chivalric culture, adventures of valiant knights, and their love affairs. After their publications in the 1560s, it was not until a half of century later that readers had a chance to enjoy a piece of literary work with a similar theme, that is The Goffredo… The success of the latter book was partly due to the precedence of particular literary pieces.

Warszawa, Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, 2015, ss. 507 + 8 s. wkł. zdj.New research on Polish‑language communities in Israel has a peculiar critical literary resonance in Poland, among others due to the complex, double, Polish‑Jewish identity of the authors. Thus, the fact that Polish literary criticism does not pay much attention to Elżbieta Kossewska’s book, Ona jeszcze mówi po polsku, ale śmieje się po hebrajsku…, is puzzling. This review points to this interesting study of the so far untackled issue of Polish‑language party press in Israel, which gives the recipient considerable cognitive satisfaction. Elżbieta Kossewska’s project included conducting research in several dozen libraries in Poland and abroad. The book resulting from it shows the richness of Polish‑language press in the Land of Israel. The thesis of the study concerns the dependence of particular press titles on political parties. Despite its monographic character, the publication is really a story about Jewish people moving from Poland to Israel, composed from scattered pages of Polish‑language Israeli newspapers. The reviewed piece should occupy an important position among the accomplishments of press studies in Poland.

Predvideni bralec izvirnika Sny i kamienie Magdalene Tulli in predvideni bralec prevoda Sanje in kamni v prevodu Jane Unuk sta dva ločena subjekta. Razlog za razliko med njima je drugačna konfiguracija odnosov med osebami izpovedi, intersemiotičnost in pragmatičnost prevoda ter drugačno funkcioniranje vsakega od teh besedil v drugi socialno‑kulturni resničnosti. Prevajalec, ki je najprej bralec izvirnika, potem pa avtor prevoda, izvaja dvojno aktualizacijo na podlagi lastnega vedenja, izkušenj in potencialnih bralčevih doživetij. Prevajalkin način branja in njena interpretacija, ki je osredotočena na zgodovinski kontekst, je opazna zlasti v leksikalni (prevod besednih zvez, frazemov in metafor) ter slovnični ravni, modalnih strukturah, v določanju kategorij, povezanih s časom, aksioloških kategorij „absolutnega” in metajeziku. Delo Sny i kamienie Magdalene Tulli je, zaradi mnogih kontekstov, strukturne sestavljenosti in večplastnosti izvor neenopomenskosti interpretacije in številnih morebitnih prevodoslovnih rešitev.
The designated reader of the original Sny i kamienie by Magdalena Tulli and the designated reader of the translation Sanje in kamni by Jana Unuk are two separate subjects. The reason for the difference is the differing configuration of the relationships between the current narrator, intersemiotics and the pragmatism of the translation as well as the differing functions in each of these texts’ socially‑cultural reality. A translator, who is first a reader of the original, and then the author of the translation, exercises a double actualization on the basis of her/his own behavior, life experiences and potential experiences as a reader of the text. The translator’s way of reading and her interpretation, which is focused on the historical context, is especially noticeable in the lexical (the translation of collocations, idioms and metaphors) and grammatical level, modal structure, determination of categories of time, axiological categories of „the absolute” and metalinguistics. The work Dreams and Stones by Magdalena Tulli is, due to the plethora of philosophical and historical contexts, its structural composition and multifacetedness the cause of multiple meanings of interpretation and therefore, contains multiple possible translation solutions.
