The work Daddy #3 (2012) by Italian artist Giulia Andreani, inspired by a photographic archive, represents Heinrich Himmler with his daughter Gudrun. By means of adapting the photographic image into painting, the artist evokes the burden, sometimes heavy to carry, of family legacies. Moreover, Daddy #3 reveals Andreani’s interest in the woman artist figure, and in the issue of artistic heritage. The painting, which provokes one to ponder the political uses of the image of the family, can also be seen as one of the rare works of art representing an emotional relationship between a father and his daughter.

The multiple body escapes any form of confinement, restriction and constructs itself without any sign of sexual normativity. Guibert refuses both heterosexual and homosexual models and anchors himself in another space, uncertain and undefined. Key words: Hervé Guibert, political’s body, modesty and immodesty.

Opis:
The second half of the 19th century was a period of great transformations: science and painting entered the novel, the novel itself evolved to the point of breaking up, authors were looking for new forms of expressions. The representatives of naturalism took the novel away from its traditional role. After all, naturalism marked the novels’ death, but it was in the novel that this movement was obliged to realize its objectives. Naturalists assigned a new target to the novel, which was no longer aesthetic, but scientific. The novel was not a simple fictive story, but aimed at becoming a serious study. The novelists’ purpose was to “dissect” their characters, their passions and emotions, based on profound determinism. Zola wanted to make an “exact and meticulous copy of life”; Huysmans intended to “dissect love” and presented himself as a “beast exhibitor”; Goncourt chose a model based on history. Zola was most involved in his scientific theories, wishing to follow Claude Bernard to the point of replacing, in his book, the word “doctor” by the word “novelist,” in order to obtain a model of literary creation. Zola seemed convinced that objectivity is possible in this type of work, but his experiments took place in an imaginary world. He did not realize his program entirely though, and remained relatively faithful to the traditional rules of novel writing. He proclaimed his hunger for a revival in literature and he moved away from the naturalist principles. Other writers, like Huysmans or the signatories of the famous “Manifest of the Five,” criticized the naturalist errors and insufficiencies. This kind of criticism was heard everywhere: henceforth, it was clear that naturalism was soon to be replaced by something else. The interest in the Russian novel and Wagner’s music can be listed among the signs of this renewal. They suggest a profound need for another, irrational way of thinking. Music and painting contributed to the transformation of the novel, too, and witnessed a need for an opening, experienced by naturalists. One may conclude that degeneration of this movement was slow and progressive, and partially resulted from the principles of the movement itself. Key words: Science, roman, modification, art.

Opis:
The novel D’un pays sans amour (2011) by Gilles Rozier features two narrators who try to recapture the past and to reconstruct with letters the Yiddishland annihilated after World War II. This vanished state, with its cultural capital situated in Warsaw, is called Atlantis in the novel and presented as a paradise in the yiddish literature and language. The choice of this metaphor encourages the reflection on the ambivalence between reality and fiction, as well as on the oppositions between presence and absence or memory and oblivion. What is more, this metaphor refers to the categories of time and space. The aim of this article is to examine the function of the Atlantis metaphor on which the novel is based and to analyze the mechanisms of narrative as memorial (on the basis of Paul Ricœur’s concept) which allow the narrator to rebuild the annihilated world of the mythical island and to bring the non‑existent back into existence. Key words: Atlantis, mythical island, the yiddish literature and language, presence / absence, memory / oblivion, time and space

Gilles de Rais, the Marshal of France - who in 1429 fought beside Joan of Arc in some crucial campaigns during the Hundred Years War (such as the siege of Orléans) - after her burning at the stake in 1431, and after his maternal grand-father’s death the next year, became one of the most cruel and perverted serial murderers, pedophiles and necrophiles in the history of humanity. The paper describes this astonishing transformation that led him from the glorious military achievements to the stake after the controversial trial in Nantes in 1440. The article tries to answer the question if this transgressor (in the common sense of the word), who continues to fascinate people almost six centuries after his death, can also be considered a transgressor according to the criteria proposed by Józef Kozielecki, a Polish psychologist, and the father of psychotransgressionism. Opis:
Despite the passage of time, the literary output by Jean Genet keeps arousing controversy in both critics and readers. It is due to the contents of his works which reflect the private life of a man who is determined to separate himself from the world of “decent people” and to live among the “aristocrats of Evil”. The present study discusses the interference of various rituals that occur in Genet’s prose writing, full of villains and vagabonds. It analyses five novels: Our Lady of the Flowers, The Miracle of the Rose, Funeral Rites, Querelle of Brest and The Thief’s Journal. The main goal is to describe how those rituals are connected to one another and why Evil can be perceived as a driving force. To present a vast range of this problem, the paper takes into consideration a number of religious, erotic and criminal elements. Key words: prose works, rituals, religion, eroticism, Evil, delinquency

“The Myth of Supermale”: Between France and Maghreb in The Sexual Life of an Islamist in Paris by Leïla Marouane Leïla Marouane is a maghrebian writer and feminist. The Sexual Life of an Islamist in Paris is her 5th novel. It is a story of a 40-year-old Maghrebian man born in Algeria who spent his life in France in a traditional Muslim family. The tensions between his country of origin and the host country appear at all levels. The protagonist cannnot combine his traditional side (associated with religion and family life), with his modern side (his work and desires). These contradictory elements constitute his identity, but his psyche is occupied by the question of sexuality. Contrary to the expectations of the reader, “sexual life of an Islamist in Paris” is virtually non-existent, at least for the hero. The dissonance between the title of the novel and the story of the protagonist’s life reveals its schizophrenia. The inability to realize that it is impossible to achieve this “myth of masculinity” can lead to mental disorders, as in the case of Marouane’s hero. Key words: maghrebian literature, men’s studies, identity, sexuality, Islam.

Was the Commynes’s syntactic cohesion (a man “not literary”, father of the genre of memoirs and diplomat of the fifteenth century which syntax has been often described as paratactic or uncohesive) influenced, according to the received idea, by his habit of the diplomatic despatch and was she perceived as uncohesive by his contemporaries? To answer his questions, respectively, we compare the lack of cohesion of the Memoirs with those of his autograph letters and then we search the headlines of the publisher Sauvage (1552) who propose a version pointed as more cohesive than that of the manuscript which serve of base to his edition. The results will show that the letters seem more cohesive than the Memoirs and that its Mémoirs’ s syntax is not underlined as embarrassing by its editor.

The author looks at metaphors and comparisons used by researchers to describe a literature historian, utilizing a cognitivist approach – that in cognizance, metaphors serve a function analogous to our senses and like masks, they expose some features of an item. In the article, she emphasizes a multitude of masks a literature historian must wear, often forced by current paradigms, and thus – she points to a variety of the historian’s roles, which results in a blurred identity.

Claude-Henri Grignon’s novel Un homme et son péché presents the life of French Canadian colonial settlers of the Laurentides region at the end of XIXth century. It depicts a realistic image of the colonisation period of Quebec history. The novel is at the origin of a media series that englobes a radio adaptation, three filmic adaptations, theater adaptations, a comic, and two television series. The aim of this article is to discuss the vision of colonisation by analysing two television series based on Un homme et son péché: Les Belles Histoires des pays d’en haut broadcast from 1956 to 1970 and Les Pays d’en haut broadcast from 2016 to 2019 on ICI Radio-Canada Télé 1. The analysis will try to trace modifications inherent to the process of adaptation on different levels (protagonists, representation of space, ideological discourse) and their influence on the vision of the colonisation period.

Children’s literature is sometimes considered to be the poor relation of literary genres throughout the world, as it is often confined to the rank of literature for the very young. Yet, on closer inspection, does this literature not play an important role in establishing national identity? In other words, does it contribute to the spread of tolerance and therefore to living together? Backed by Pierre Barbéris’ sociocriticism and structured in three parts, this contribution first illustrates the motivations behind the characters’ behavioural imposture; then examines the internal components that articulate the novel’s literality. Finally, the analysis shows that Jeanne Abou’ou’s Lettre à Tita 2, beyond the stigmatization of a poorly assumed modernism or the exaltation of traditional values, deeply encapsulates the writer’s desire to postulate an emerging world in which Cameroonians would readily identify themselves.

This text is an attempt to touch on the theme of madness in literature. While recalling an interpretation of the first modern novel (Vladimir Nabokov, Lectures on Don Quixote), the author refers us to a Cartesian attempt of bypassing the madman position. This moment, described in Meditations on First Philosophy, becomes the starting point for musings on the nature of language and the contemporary state of literary research, erroneously seeking a basis in legal and economical sciences. The main subject here remains a rigorous analysis of Nikolai Gogol’s Diary of a Madman. In the course of the lecture, the nature of madness is revealed in front of the reader, the economy of “insane” writing, which jeopardizes any positivity of sense, and with it – the achievements of traditional metaphysics. A comparative dimension of interpretation also reveals historically fluid borders between a sane and insane subject.

The article is a theoretical consideration on translation perceived as a game. The aforementioned game, whose constituents were brought up at the beginning of the article, bears features typical of the practice of writing texts during the Thursday meetings of the OuLiPo members. The author assumes that every literary text is a result of the game proposed by the writer. The translator faces the challenge posed by the original text, and by translating it into a different cultural and linguistic reality, he makes his next move in the game. During the analysis of his actions, it occurs that translation resembles writing texts under strict rules. The ludic character of translation is also confirmed in the article by selected translators, who share their experiences related to the art of translation. The translator, just like an Oulipian, draws from the richness of language and literature, creating new texts based on those which have already been created. A translation’s level of difficulty depends on the source text’s type and characteristic, its cultural origin, as well as the culture of the target text. These elements constitute a sort of constraints, determining the choices made by the translator, nonetheless giving him some freedom as well. Translations are similar to OuLiPo practices, relying on intellectual exercise and the joy of creation, the purpose of which is to ensure that there is a continuity and freshness in literature and to provide it with new tools and structures. Key words: Game, translation, Oulipian works.
