Czy to był rok karnawału? Świadectwo odmiennych strategii wpływu w "Solidarności"

Opis:
Was it the Year of the Carnival? A Testimony to the Variety of Strategies of Influence Within “Solidarity” Sauerland’s text is concerned with the difference in the aspirations and dreams of influence in “Solidarity” on the subjective transformations of the country. The text is a testimony and a clear demonstration of a dramatic collision of the network and the self-government strategy which was taken into consideration at some point and the range of the social mobilization of „Solidarity” in Poland, as well as the need to create a new model of the state, as related to the drama of the model which eventually dominated the Polish transformation, with particular attention paid to the role and influence of Lech Wałęsa. The author considers the phenomenon of “Solidarity” as a process and a real change-oriented action heading towards self-government. He uses his own observations, experiences and notes from participation in these processes, for example in the context of planning reforms of higher education. He asks a crucial question concerning “Solidarity”: was it a carnival or a revolution? If it was a revolution, was it more like the French, the Russian, or the American one? He emphasizes that only Hanna Arendt understood not only the historical, but also the “futuristic” sense of the American revolution. Leadership is different in carnival and in revolution, with completely different contexts of action, and the American version is even more significant. The author analyzes the tragic position of Lech Wałęsa, suggesting the existence of a lost alternative for the scenario of influence which was eventually accepted under the influence of Wałęsa and his supporters, even though their domination weakened the final effects of the initialized actions and processes.

Opis:
The author begins his discussion of the problems associated with Marcus Antonius’s exercise of the office of a tribune of the plebs in 49 BC by indicating the peculiar features of his tribunate. For it turned out that Antonius had to hold his plebeian office in a time when the Roman Republic saw events which would determine its future fate. Antonius actively participated in these events and played a decisive role in them due to his political associations. The consequence of his engagement was a delay of many months in his activity associated with this tenure and active participation in the civil war. Antonius resumed his duties as the tribune of the plebs as late as at the end of his term i.e. shortly before 9 December, 49. Then the author describes the problems associated with Antonius’s appointment to the college of tribunes of the plebs for the year 49, especially the support that was expressed to him at that time by C. Scribonius Curio, a former‑year tribune of the plebs who was his friend, and by a protector and at the same time the principal of both men — C. Iulius Caesar. Due to this fact a great deal of attention was devoted to the analysis of source information associated with these issues, especially the ones contained in the Eighth Book of the Bellum Gallicum by Aulus Hirtius. The author begins his discussion of the activities initiated by Antonius after he assumed the office on 10 December, 50 by presenting his expression of support for the defence of Caesar and the activities directed against Pompeius that were realised until the end of this month. Then the author concentrateshis attention on the presentation of the most important and best known manoeuvres of Antonius that he realised in the senate forum during 1—7 January, 49, during the sessions devoted to Pompeius’s conflict with Caesar. The author devoted due attention to the events that happened in the senate room on the first and last day of the sessions. The activity of Antonius away from Rome during the Italic campaign was mentioned only briefly as it is not directly associated with the problem stated in the title of the article. The author’s considerations are concluded by a discussion of Antonius’s resumption of the duty of a tribune of the plebs in the final period of his tenure and an evaluation of his tribunate.

Opis:
In the process of political and legal transformations in Silesia, initiated in 1327, the events that took place in 1336 deserve more attention. The earliest one concerns the transformation of the Duchy of Wrocław into the hereditary Duchy of the Czech Crown, where the governor’s rule on behalf of the king would be held from then on by the land starost until 1742. The next one deals with the feudalisation of the first of the still free dukes of the Świdnicko- Jaworsk line, Bolko Ziębicki. The next one refers to the resignation of the rights to the Duchy of Ścinawa by its former liege duke from the Silesian Piast dynasty, Jan ścinawski, in favour of the Czech king, John of Bohemia, in exchange for lifetime governor’s rule in the Duchy of Głogów. The next one is connected with the childless death of the Upper Silesian Duke Leszek of Racibórz in 1336, which in 1337 would be the cause of a spectacular dispute over the inheritance rights after him. These events provoke an attempt to evaluate the Silesian policy of John of Bohemia and Casimir the Great after the Visegrad Congress of 1335.

Opis:
In the Year of the Four Emperors Rome saw many dramatic events. Despite the fact that in that period the capital of the empire was not the centre stage of events, both the city and its residents did suffer a great deal.  Numerous references furnished by source literature enable us to reconstruct the image of Rome of the years 68—69. The subsequent emperors who came to the capital: Galba, Otho and Vitellius, exploited it — each of them during their brief reign — to attain their personal goals, for example by placing numerous representations of themselves in various places in the city. Each subsequent entry of an emperor to the city entailed greater and great. However, it were the gods who were blamed to the greatest extent for destroying Rome. It was them who brought about many disasters in the city by the Tiber by sending numerous mala on the capital.

Opis:
In discussing C. Iulius Caesar’s office of aedile held by him in 65 BC, the author of the present article included in his deliberations Caesar’s activity on two levels: his actions going beyond the powers of the curule aedile and the measures closely related to the duties thereof. The former ones were connected to the accusations that Caesar had taken part in the conspiracies organized at that time, whose participants aimed at seizing power in the Republic. These allegations concerned Caesar’s cooperation, also in this context, with Marcus Licinius Crassus. The latter ones, that is the activities closely related to the duties of the curule aedile, pertained to Caesar’s actions implemented within the prerogatives of these officials, that he took either independently or in cooperation with Marcus Calpurnius Bibulus, his peer at the office. Discussing both abovementioned aspects, the author analyzes the grounds of Caesar’s specific initiatives, contemplates the course of their implementation as well as their circumstances and conditions. He pays special attention to the positive and negative outcomes of his moves, presenting them both on a personal and public level.
