Gender politics in The Kiss of the Spider Woman by Manuel Puig The objective of the present work is to study the constructions of sexual identities that are found in The Kiss of the Spider Woman by Manuel Puig. In order to clarify this concept, it is important to contextualize the book in its period, its area of political conflicts that were present in Argentina in the 70s, as well as in the significantly phallic-centered society. Subsequently, through the use of dichotomies, the text will analyze the problem of the rigidity of the binary logic and, at the same time, will present new forms of gender-sexual constructions. Finally, this article will investigate the notion of homosexuality as a transgressive practice that questions the hegemonic discourse of heterosexuality seen and understood as the only legitimate orientation. Key words: Manuel Puig, gender, sexuality, heterosexual hegemony, politics.

Although the works of Michel Tremblay are replete with references to other authors, it is the phenomenon of autotextuality that becomes the focal point of the analysis in this article. The author of “Chroniques du Plateau Mont-Royal” and numerous plays and novels binds them all together by resorting to the recurrence of his figures. Thus, the figure of Mother, a figure grafted onto the network of Michel Tremblay’s works, undergoes a metamorphosis from boisterous and authoritarian Nana Tremblay (in the autobiographical prose and drama) to a symbol of ideal motherhood embodied by The Great Mother of Tremblay’s universe. She gives the beginning to both new life and new writing and hence she becomes her writer-son’s inspiration and creative muse. Key words: Michel Tremblay; autotextuality; metamorphoses; mother; writing

Our article talk (once again) about the literary history; it calls into question the relationship, not very good, between the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and the French writer Madame de Staël in the early nineteenth century. Devoid of all civic and political rights, like all women at that time, Madame de Staël has established herself before the most important statesman of Europe by her intelligence and by the great power of her writings.

The practice of invoking rituals is one of the resources most often employed in the Spanish New Theatre: a play may represent a rite, or resemble a certain ceremony. The characters celebrate little daily ceremonies or acts, often blasphemous, involving a ritual victim. In this respect, Bilbatúa notes that one can even observe a certain trend in the theatrical practice, namely, resorting to ceremonies on a regular basis. This however, may only be justified when used in order to “highlight religious, sexual, political and other repressions in a way they appear in our sub‑consious”. The authors, who seem to share the opinion of Riaza that “ceremonial theatre is better suited to challenge bourgeois spectator”, engage in rituals to denounce highly ritualised socio‑political reality of the Francoist period, to deal with present problems alluding to human condition more generally, or to counter taboos and social conventions overwhelming human beings, and leading to frustration and permanent malaise they suffer from. Key words: the Spanish New Theatre, the theatre in the Francoist period, the theatre as an anti‑Francoist opposition, the ceremonial theatre, dramatization of rites and ceremonies

Insights and Limitations of a Feminist Reading of La Princesse de Clèves According to Queer Theory Often interpreted from the feminist perspective, La Princesse de Clèves has come to represent a tale of feminine oppression and feminine heroism. As enlightening as such a reading may be, this paper seeks to further explore the gendered identities at stake in the novel, with the help of a Nietzschean queer theory. Underlining the role of Madame de Clèves in the economy of desire that constructs space and power in the world of the text is an important step toward a more subtle understanding of the narrative. Key words: Clèves, Lafayette, queer, feminism, 17th century.

The weight of the figure of Gabriel García Márquez and of magical realism in later generations is the root of a conflict that has become a part of literary matters. The writer’s work has become an inevitable reference for all Colombian writers, no matter how much it is hated, petrifying into a label that is as frequent as it is erroneous. In the writings of such authors as Fernando Vallejo, Héctor Abad Faciolince, Nahum Montt or Juan Gabriel Vásquez, the complex relationship with the heritage of García Márquez is reiterated as a secondary theme, complementing the image of violent Colombia. The article discusses specific examples of narrative works of the above mentioned authors and their very specific, respectful attitude to the paternal figure of García Márquez and his work, to love-and-hate, to rejection-and-tribute, to a simultaneous affirmation-and-negation, which results in an ironic transformation and reinterpretation of the concept of magical realism and of the Macondian heritage, and subsequently widens the perspective from which the literary image of contemporary Colombia is constructed and read. Key words: Magical realism, Colombia, recent literature, Gabriel García Márquez.

In her first novel, La fille de la Casbah (The Daughter of the Casbah), published in 1996, Leïla Marouane describes daily life of women living in the heart of Algiers in the late 80s. This was the time of sociopolitical transformations (the birth of multiparty and the rise of Islamic fundamentalism). This article analyzes the practices and rituals mentioned by the writer on three levels: that of everyday life, tradition and Islam. The analysis demonstrated that these rites are used as benchmarks in the world undergoing violent changes, but at the same time they hinder the emancipation of the modern woman by dictating her behaviors consistent with social roles attributed to her (daughter, wife, mother). The tragic end of the Templars turned them into a myth that has left a deep mark on the contemporary narrative. Currently, seen as innocent martyrs, the Templars acquired features, as wanted San Bernardo, of celestial militia, fighting the forces of evil. However, the legends that bind tight and unorthodox beliefs have shifted even historiographical versions, and the Templars also become dark and intriguing characters. Before the massive appearance of the Templars in Spanish narrative of the end of the millennium, the Galician filmmaker Amando de Ossorio made some films about the warriors-monks, giving them horror film features and binding them to the family of vampires, mummies and zombies. The treatment they were given by the Galician filmmaker, despite the originality and some of the literary reminiscences, is to be inserted in the continuous process of mystification of the Templars. Key words: Order of the Temple, mythology, Amando de Ossorio, cinema, medieval-themed narrative

Opis:
In this article I delve into a recently published novel, El dios de Darwin (2014), written by Sabina Berman. Its purpose revolves around the utopic implications of the author´s esthetic project. First, I examine the relationship between the two plots which are intertwined in the novel. One of them takes place nowadays, around 2012; the other happens in 1876, in the decline of Darwin’s life, since he is the main character. El dios de Darwin is the story of a secret document found in Westminster Abbey by Antonio Márquez, a zoologist. A moment before his murder by a fundamentalist cell in Dubai, he attains to send by email fragments of the secret document to three other pro‑evolutionist friends. One of them is Karen Nieto, the main character of the contemporary plot. Struggling against Franco, Márquez’s former lover, who was a spy of a fundamentalist organization, Nieto at the end manages to rescue the secret document, he attempted to destroy. Within the second plot, the secret document (Theological Autobiography) and the circumstances of it being written by Darwin are interspersed until the end. The Autobiography was verily brought to light from censorship by Nora Barlow (1995), Darwin’s great‑granddaughter. The story unravels the unknown conversion to agnosticism experienced by the British naturalist. Since the novel is rich enough in scientific data and demonstrations extracted from The Origins of Species, The Descend of Man and the authentic Autobiography, I establish a parallelism between Darwin’s revolutionary contribution and the set of ideas about planetary ethics posed by the Brazilian theologian, Leonardo Boff. Key words: Darwin, natural morality, planetary ethics, Sabina Berman

Femininity in Canadian Children’s Literature. An Analysis of the Incomparable Mademoiselle Charlotte The influence of children’s literature on the development of gender identity has been well established. However, it seems that many children’s books are conveying stereotypical representations of genders as well as notable iniquities among males and females characters. Therefore, to counterbalance the detrimental effects that this could have on gender role socialisation, books that are presenting positive, non-traditional representations of masculinities and femininities should be put forward. In this regards, the incomparable Mademoiselle Charlotte, the beloved main character of a young Canadian readers series, is certainly bringing her share to the diversity of female models. In this article, this unconventional, eccentric lady is the subject of our interest.A content analysis was performed on the seven novels of the series in order to highlight many facets of her persona that could influence the developing minds of young readers by broadening their perceptions regarding variable femininities. Key words: children’s literature, social construction of gender, femininity, stereotypes.

Maryse, a postmodern novel by Francine Noël, offers an ironic look at the baby boomers’ uncertain axiology. We focus on the multiple levels of irony inherent in the portrait of the characters of the novel. Our analysis of the ironic discourse has two interpretative components. First, we closely examine the dialogue between two characters, lovers, which reflects, as in a mise en abyme, the baby boomers’ generally accepted idea of the couple. Second, we study the ironic discourse of the couple from the social perspective, as seen through Maryse’s sentimental affair, whose personal and professional journey exemplifies the intertextual game found in other French classic novels (Marcel Proust’s À la recherche du temps perdu and Quebecois novels (Gabrielle Roy’s Bonheur d’occasion). Key words: The postmodern novel, the couple, intertextual game, the baby boom generation, the literary portrait of a protagonist, the ironic.

Opis:
Transgression is everywhere in Les Âmes fortes. It is present in the form of the narrative in which two opposite versions of events question the very notion of truth and well-established moral norms of judgement. As the novel of the impossible truth, Les Âmes fortes highlights the power of fiction, of lies, and of manipulation. Moral virtues are inverted in two opposite versions of the events: when generosity is increasingly showed, does it become a mark of ferocity and pride, a means of domination, or an aspect of the superior art of loosing? The Biblical values are constantly profaned in this complex novel: numerous Biblical references are quoted only to be perverted immediately afterwards. For example, in one of the two versions of her own story, one of the protagonists, Therese, manages to reach sanctity in evil, which enables her to assert her absolute domination - the main feature of the strong souls, the “âmes fortes”. Key words: Transgression, profanation, manipulation, perversion, illusion.
