Opis:
Significant for the history of the reception of the Polish poet in Bulgaria are the book published in the Czesław Miłosz year: It (translated by Silvia Borisova and Kamen Rikev). The volume It is discussed from the point of view of the faithfulness of the translation of the poet’s specific philosophical interests. The translation of Native Realm is also of significance to the Bulgarian perception of Miłosz. The artistic value of the translation (Родната Европа, 2012) done by Margreta Grigorova and Mira Kostova is considered with reference to the various meanings of the notion of what it means to be European.

The article comments on Milen Ruskov’s third novel Summit (The Heights / Възвишение, 2011) and its critical acclaim in Bulgaria. Set in 19th-century milieu, the revolutionary struggles and the novel’s unique language have been indicated by critics as its most outstanding aspects that provoke new debates on the national and linguistic identity of contemporary Bulgarians. At the same time the novel’s Polish translation by Magdalena Pytlak (Wzniesienie, 2017) poses other questions concerning the promotion of modern Bulgarian culture abroad, the translatability of Ruskov’s work and the translator’s strategies in terms of successfully “importing” Bulgarian literature into the Polish context.

Opis:
The paper gives an overview of the history and present-day status of Polish studies at St Kliment Ohridski University in Sofia and discusses several key aspects of Polish cultural presence in contemporary Bulgaria. It explains the specific structure of Polish philology studies at the University in the light of the country’s modern educational system and highlights the most prominent scholars that have shaped the prestige of this particular branch of Slavistics. Apart from academic research and educational achievements, another factor playing a significant role in present-day Polish-Bulgarian cultural dialogue is the Polish Institute in Sofia. The paper demonstrates how positive attitudes towards Poland and its cultural heritage have substantially influenced the reception of prominent Poles in Bulgaria. The cases of Lech Wałęsa, pope John Paul II and Czesław Miłosz reveal a tendency to idealize their legacy due to the need of public values lacking in Bulgarian society.

The paper discusses the historical reception of Polish trifles (fraszki) in Bulgaria, as well as the specific status of that genre in Bulgarian literary studies. Bulgarian translators of trifles have been constantly experiencing two major challenges: to successfully adapt old¬ Polish reality to their national cultural context and to express the uniqueness of trifles as a separate literary genre. The beginning of the 21st century brings new translations of classic trifles in Bulgaria, but most importantly marks the appearance of original writings that have undoubtedly been influenced by their authors’ scholarly research and translations of trifles. The best examples are some fiction and poetry works by Boyan Biolchev and Panayot Karagyozov.

Opis:
The article deals with a Bulgarian translation of Czesław Miłosz’s poem Child of Europe. The author of the translation, Katia Mitova, was a well-known interpreter of Polish literature and an expert in literature. The translation itself, which appeared in fifty numbered copies, forms a separate bibliophile edition (the illustrator of the volume was Jan Libenstein). The article discusses the aspects connected with the elitism of the edition in the context of interesting Bulgarian bibliophile tradition observed in the interwar period, but also in connection with ambiguous and difficult to understand concepts found in the poem written by the Polish Noble Prize Laureate. The author of the article focuses on the very concept of Europe as it appears in the poem and its connotations to the essence of human intelligence and cogni-tion. Additionally, the article presents various aspects of irony regarded as a form of speech, important not only in the process of appropriate comprehension of this poetic work. In translation, it also helps to attain the correct interpretation of the ideological and artistic contents of the poem.

Opis:
This study presents various perspectives on cultural communication issues, in the context of globalization and political and economic transformation in Poland and Bulgaria since the democratic revolution of the 1989. Poland and Bulgaria have old historical and cultural relations, defined and developed institutionally in different spheres of social life at the be-ginning of the twentieth century. Cultural cooperation is a kind of catalyst for the country’s foreign policy: maintains the historical, ethnic, and regional cooperation, symbolizes the successes, compensates for the negative relations and is an indirect tool for deepening the breakthrough in bilateral relations. Nowadays, branding models are used to promote the image of countries as a tool of the public diplomacy. This article examines the dynamic role of the changes in the cross-cultural communication. The article draws on the most important cultural and scientific publications and literature to argue that building this cultural coopera-tion has its roots in the capability to mobilize and use culture as a resource for collaborative action between Poland and Bulgaria.

Years 2011 and 2015 are two anniversaries both linked with the name of Tadeusz Grabowski – 130th anniversary of the Polish professor and diplomat and 100th anniversary of the Bulgarian questionnaire on the Polish issue (1915–1916) – an important document about Polish-Bulgarian relations. Prof. Magda Karabelova initiated the two publications about Prof. Grabowski and his work in Bulgaria – biography of Tadeusz Grabowski and the first Bulgarian translation of the Bulgarian questionnaire on the Polish issue (1915–1916). These two publications are presented in the article. Prof. Tadeusz Grabowski has played a very important role in Polish-Bulgarian relations, both as a scientist and as a polish ambassador in Bulgaria. Probably the Questionnaire is one of his most important publications – a document not only about the diplomatic mission of Poland at that time but also a record of the vision of the highest Bulgarian public figures about the political situation and relations with Poland. A careful reading of both surveys leaves no doubt that it is worth the efforts of Prof. Karabelova to present them to the Bulgarian audience. The mission of Prof. Tadeusz Grabowski has influenced not only Polish-Bulgarian relations, but also our understanding of the political and social situation in the country.

Разглеждайки го списъка на преведените през последните петдесет годин книги от български на полски очевидно е, че след 1989 година броят на артистичните преводи систематично и драматично намалява. Причината на тези негативни тенденции трябва да се търси в крайно неразбираема културна политика — отлагане на съответните институции задалженията си да се подкрепя междукултурен диалог. Очевидно е, че без структурните промяни (подкрепящи активно действаши преводачи) няма шанс за прогресивните промяни.
After 1989 the number of translations of Bulgarian literature into Polish decreased dramatically in comparison with the output of the previous 50 years. On the one hand, this seems to be caused by a complete change of the Polish state’s cultural policy principles, too little activity on the part of relevant institutions, or even giving up the obligation to create and support the inter‑cultural dialogue or to mediate in this process. On the other hand, it is primarily market economy and interest of the media and not the efforts or commitment of the translators that are decisive factors for the number and quality of publications.

The article comments on the presence of Bulgarian literature in Poland in 2015 from the perspective of genre forms, conventions, stylistic devices, and topics. In the abovementioned year, translations (by Hanna Karpińska) of the following works were published: Kalin Terziyski’s collection of short stories Is there anybody to love you?, Zachary Karabashliev’s road novel 18% gray, and Georgi Tenev’s crime drama The Evil Prince. The writers created texts that elicit strong emotions, based on realistic convention, in a simplified, accessible style. Terziyski and Karabashliev created a reality recognized by the reader, in which at the forefront there is the present social and cultural situation along with the problems of modern man (the breakdown of interpersonal relationships, as well as feelings of dissatisfaction, loneliness, and misery, accompanied by the desire for true love, devotion, and dedication). Tenev presents a crime drama based on the current elements of the political and social life, thereby exposing corrupt and criminal practices.
