Opis:
The reading of literary texts has been strongly affected by modern times and media developments. In the development of reading, a proficiency gap can be perceived. In this contribution theoretical starting points are presented for viewing reading from the perspective of scientific disciplines and these are supported by empirical data on the subjective concepts of reading literary texts among future teachers of foreign languages. Teachers, with their inclination or refusal to read and their competences, transmit their views intentionally or unintentionally, consciously or unconsciously to students. At this point their subjective concepts of reading have consequences beyond the subjective. Illustrative segments from interviews and subsequent analysis will allow for a discussion and categorization of concepts held by readers and of guidelines for the education of teachers.

This study aimed at discovering the characteristics of non/traditional readers that can be used to formulate a typology and identify students’ attitudes towards reading for pleasure. It also deals with the social context influencing students’ reading culture. The questionnaire survey was conducted on 381 students at the Faculty of Education, University of Ostrava. The results showed that students who read for more than one hour a day prefer to read books in paper form, including textbooks, over reading electronic books, multimedia texts or playing on computers and consider themselves traditional readers. Non-traditional readers use critical thinking methods to understand texts and prefer a multimedia format for texts when reading for pleasure over playing computer games, reading e-books, and reading paper-based books. The study also points to the growing importance of the evolving multimedia reading culture in the era of the 4.0 Industrial Revolution.

Opis:
The post-structuralist theory of literature brings a new concept of reading. A reader is not only a receiver who should decipher a linguistic code, but s/he becomes the subject of plural operations of reading: understanding, associations, evaluation, feelings and emotions. And the most important thing: reading can transform a reader’s mind and his/her sensibilities. This broad concept of reading gives the teacher of literature fantastic possibilities. The territory of literature is the esthetic and moral space, where a pupil can compare his/her experience with other better or worse subject. In the first chapter I try to show that the compulsion of reading books at school is arbitrary and makes the system of the policy of education invisible. I claim that a teacher (not the reading list) is the model of value of literature. S/He has no choice - texts in the classroom have my face and my voice and I have to personally confirm their advantage to life. In the next chapters (“Situations of Readings”, “Awakenings”, “Jealousy and Reading”, “Inducing to Infidelity”) I show how the teacher can produce “the event of reading”, using emotions of intimate reading. Every strategy that I describe - strategy of situational teaching - has the same question: whether a given narrative will work for good or ill in the life of other readers, after the last page has been turned. Will this fiction help form a character who is hypersensitive, properly sensitive, or insensitive; intellectually pretentious, thoughtful, or shallow; rash, bold, or timid; bigoted or tolerant? The answering to the questions means to win the battle of myself.

This paper presents teaching reading and bibliotherapy as useful methods for educating and rehabilitating children and youth with mental disability. The theoretical framework is connected with different examples of applying the methods and their real effectiveness. Particularly significant achievements of teaching reading may be observed in the rehabilitation of children with Down syndrome (DS). Teaching reading is very often matched with bibliotherapy programmes as a complex and coherent way for developing children’s speech, language, memory, imagination, creative thinking, and emotional maturity.

This article presents the issue of child readership in a multicultural world. The article is based on the VEGA 1/0455/18 research project named “Research and Development of Reading Enthusiasm with Younger School-Age Learners”,2 in which a team focused its research activities on the personality traits of readers, the social context of reading and their reading preferences. The period when children first encounter a book induces and stimulates a cultural need in children. This need appears at a pre-school age and fully develops during the early schooling years of a child. The current multicultural school presents relatively new social contexts that accompany the child in the context of their reading experience and experiences. The contents, genres and forms that children currently prefer when reading change in connection with cultural and social diversity. The article presents certain findings from two phases of research in which the research team used the qualitative method of discussions with focus groups and a questionnaire to identify the typical traits of readers and non-readers, the social context of readership and their preferred content, forms and media. Several noteworthy differences were identified, which are closely related to a multicultural environment and significantly differentiate the young readers of today from readers in the past.

The study was conducted on 122 first-year engineering students at the tertiary level to explore the students’ perceptions of themselves as readers and the concept of reading. Data collected by open-ended brainstorming interviews with the students were classified according to the themes and presented in tables. The result of the study demonstrates that most of the students at this level wish to be good readers since they feel that reading improves their personality, word power and employability skills. The presented study aimed at finding the opinions of young adults because in the present age, more emphasis is put on the role of the learner in the language learning process. As language learning is primarily a learner-oriented activity, learners’ preferences influence their learning. Interest on the part of the reader plays a vital role in developing the habit of reading. Hence, learners’ needs and interests should be taken into consideration for effective learning and teaching to take place. Thus, the study shows that it is appropriate to understand students’ conception of reading for promoting their interest in reading and enhancing their reading skills.

The study presents the results of PIAAC measurements and focuses on teachers as mediators of education and their achievements in literacy and skills in reading and writing at home and at work. Multiple regression analysis is used in the research to examine the influence of independent variables - earnings, age, gender and reading index - on the level of teachers’ literacy. Values of the coefficient of determination vary from 0.05 (Poland) to 0.23 (Belgium). The results are compared at the country level and show the position of Slovak teachers in these measurements. Also, they highlight the most successful countries and point to the countries with positions similar to Slovakia. Based on the research findings, it can be stated that the higher level of literacy is associated with a higher level of writing and reading activities at work more than at home. An important finding is also the result that in all countries, the literacy level declines with age.

This paper examines the effects of parental characteristics and home resources on reading performance of 15-year-old Filipino students using the 2018 International Assessment Program (PISA) Philippine dataset. Results revealed that the multiple linear regression model statistically significantly predicted reading performance. Parental education, parental occupational status, home educational resources, cultural possessions, and home ICT resources were found to be significant predictors of reading performance. With the Philippines ranking lowest on PISA reading performance, the results show that family variables are essential factors to consider. This study also provides empirical evidence of cultural capital importance in examining variations in educational outcomes.

This paper develops a novel approach, dubbed a Mind Story, to the thoughts of writers through decoding the writing and then constructing the deconstructed story into mind. It is beyond the traditional decoding reading for college learners in the curriculum of literature, wherein the interaction between authors and readers is processed as a story, being the most recognizable interface of minds. The principles and proceedings on the construction of mind story are firstly presented and then manifested by the teaching of “Hills Like White Elephants” written by Ernest Miller Hemingway. The differential results show that the construction of ‘Mind Story’ in decoding reading not only gives students interesting aura but also enhances the students’ English abilities throughout the curriculum of literature reading.

The study deals with the revealed social context influencing younger pupils’ reading. Respondents’ statements were obtained through a questionnaire of own design. Items related to the social context arose from a qualitative analysis of focus interviews in the previous research phase. The research sample consisted of 693 Slovak, 254 Czech and 248 Polish pupils 9-10 years old. Findings showed differences between national groups. Pupils prefer reading with someone; mothers are the most important partners for sharing, fathers read slightly more often only to Polish pupils. Polish pupils prefer reading aloud in front of an audience the most. Teachers as partners for reading interests are the most prominent in the Polish group. The study presents findings and differences in international comparisons of the social context of younger pupils’ reading.

This study examines the correlation between 9–10-year-old learners’ reading interest and four types of socio-cultural environments that stimulate their interest (enthusiasm) in reading as a fundamental pillar of reading literacy development. The study aimed to map and analyse the socio-cultural context of four levels of intensity of reading interest of 1195 Slovak, Czech and Polish learners. A 46-item questionnaire was used to achieve the aim of the study. Statistical testing using Spearman’s coefficient was used for analysis. The significant results of the research showed that the correlation between monitored younger learners’ reading interest and family environment is very weak, and reading as a leisure activity in the virtual environment is not attractive.
