The main purpose of this study is to investigate the preferences of English-major students to determine their reading activities when they have the choice of reading a printed text or an electronic text. The participants chosen for the study were 105 students from English reading classes at an English department. For the purpose of finding out students’ preferences for English reading from printed or electronic texts, a questionnaire for online reading comprehension was employed. The result of an independent-samples t test showed that there was no significant difference between the genders (male and female) regarding preference for printed or electronic texts. The results of a one-way ANOVA showed that there were significant differences between the different proficiency levels (high, intermediate, and low) regarding their preferences for printed text or electronic text in male and female groups. Interestingly, both the males and females in the high proficiency group preferred the printed text over the electronic text, and the students at the low proficiency level preferred to use the electronic text over the printed text to read. In conclusion, these results can provide educators and instructors with text preferences for their students when they designate the reading medium which could improve readers’ reading comprehension performance in the long run.

In the last decade, the emergence of diverse students in a streamed class based on the mathematical ability brought upon challenges for the teacher to find an approach which could accommodate all students. This study aims to investigate the connection of students’ ability with their learning preferences in mathematics by applying differentiated instruction using tiered assignments and parallel tasks. This qualitative approach was used for this study from a sample of year 7 mathematics students within Pengukuhan Kemahiran Asas programme (PeKA) (the Basic Skills Strengthening programme), which revolved upon low ability for students with very weak numeracy skills. The findings in general revealed that there is an improvement in their performance.

The presented text is the result of reflections on the issue of perceiving visual messages which are an illustration of the content of printed text by adults as primary recipients of book illustrations addressed to children of pre-reading age. The article contains reflections on the pictorial character of our environment, it presents the underlying assumptions of the strategy of recognizing image preferences related to book illustration and trends in the preferences of adult intermediaries in the area of book illustration in the aspect of areas of image realization and artistic quality recognized as the dominant elements of imaging. The article concludes with fi nal reflections focused on the quality and value of observations in the context of a visual image in the form of a book illustration.

This article presents research on value preferences of eleven-year-old fifth grade pupils. Differences between two groups of gifted pupils were observed - between 71 contemporary pupils and 229 pupils in ELSPAC in the years 2002 - 03. The identical identification criteria were used in the selection of both groups. By selecting questions from the ELSPAC questionnaires we compared the value preferences data of both of the gifted groups. We were dealing with research questions: which values the gifted prefer in friends, which priorities of life values they have, and which one is the most important for them. No statistically significant differences were found in the comparison of the majority of the values of the two groups. In the evaluation of friends, all the respondents most preferred the item “how you get along“ and then “their reliability“. The most significant difference was found in the item “the gain from your friendship with them“ which moved from the 15t to the 5t place in 10 years. No statistically significant differences were found in the question of life values between the two groups of gifted children in our data set except for the item “personal property,“ which was more important for the gifted of 2012. The most important value for both of the groups was “family relations“ ahead of the item “health“ and “having friends“.

Vocabulary has long been taught and learned through single words. The traditional learning involved making lists of words with their translations into learner native language. Although words are the key blocks of language, they do not occur individually. To produce coherent texts, words are combined and integrated into various situations. Language practitioners, who are unaware of recent linguistic research, usually use commercial textbooks that rely on grammar syllabus. In 1993, M. Lewis introduced a lexical approach which claims that language consists of meaningful word combinations known as chunks. Corpus studies confirmed that chunks dominate all language structures. It is acknowledged that acquisition of lexis is a very complex and demanding process. Learners of each generation use different ways of learning. Recognition and recall are two key concepts that demonstrate how learners can cope with receptive and productive skills. Recognition implies understanding lexis while reading or listening, and recall refers to learners’ ability to remember and use it in speaking or writing. This article aims at investigating how students of Klaipeda University, who represent Generation Z (2000–present), prefer to learn English for Specific Purposes (ESP) lexis, which is one of key difficulties they encounter in learning English. The data are obtained from the two surveys that have been administered to the respondents. The analysis of the responses reveals that Generation Z prefers traditional ways of mastering lexis.

This article presents the issue of child readership in a multicultural world. The article is based on the VEGA 1/0455/18 research project named “Research and Development of Reading Enthusiasm with Younger School-Age Learners”,2 in which a team focused its research activities on the personality traits of readers, the social context of reading and their reading preferences. The period when children first encounter a book induces and stimulates a cultural need in children. This need appears at a pre-school age and fully develops during the early schooling years of a child. The current multicultural school presents relatively new social contexts that accompany the child in the context of their reading experience and experiences. The contents, genres and forms that children currently prefer when reading change in connection with cultural and social diversity. The article presents certain findings from two phases of research in which the research team used the qualitative method of discussions with focus groups and a questionnaire to identify the typical traits of readers and non-readers, the social context of readership and their preferred content, forms and media. Several noteworthy differences were identified, which are closely related to a multicultural environment and significantly differentiate the young readers of today from readers in the past.

The author presents the results of a research focused on finding a number of psychological characteristics of state administration and municipality managers who influence the school system at a regional level. The research, which was oriented towards determination of the value structure and preferences, comes out of the premise that values quite significantly regulate and correct human behaviour. The empiric probe signalizes that the tested persons do not show value recondition consistent with their professional roles and, at the same time, it also aspires to map mutual ties of the researched value aspects with other personality characteristics.

The existing multilateral trade regime is often beleaguered for unfairly privileging its Western guarantors. Since not all countries command the same opportunity sets to compete in global markets, world trade rules sanction über-rich markets to extend autonomous trade concessions to capital-poor countries without demanding any reciprocal treatment. Given the entanglements of trade in the thorny issues of international development and distributive justice, this paper joins a crowded trade as/and fairness debate by judging how the present global economic order (dis)favors developing and least developed countries on the basis of equal opportunity. In a Roemerian-Rawlsian reading of economic fairness, I start by elevating the demands of diffuse reciprocity over the misguided minimalism of mutual reciprocity in a twin attempt to morally defend asymmetric exchanges between asymmetric trading partners and to redress background inequalities in access to the merits of commerce. While the notion and praxis of altruism in international trade generally allude to northern democracies in modern political thought, this article also unmasks parallel models of special and differential treatment projects lorded over by two seemingly unusual suspects: the Eurasian Economic Union and the People’s Republic of China. In juxtaposing weak and strong conceptions of equal opportunity vis-à-vis leading compensatory measures presently open to needy nations, I articulate how the strong standard of equal opportunity is partially cantilevered by existing level-playing-field structures and yet brutally bulldozed at once by the politics of donor discretion. Finally, although a diluted form of diffuse reciprocity grows more fashionable among affluent and emerging economies, unlocking the strong standard of equal opportunity still insists on a solidaristic system of preferences to diffuse both opportunities and obligations arising from a less tilted trading order as widely and deeply as possible.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badania przeprowadzonego w ramach ogólnopolskiego projektu Political Preferences. Badanie przeprowadzono jesienią 2019 r. w wykorzystaniem metody ankietowej na liczącej 1072 osób reprezentatywnej próbie losowej dorosłych mieszkańców Polski.
Election silence is the time when any form of political campaigning is banned. It is the time that should be spent on peaceful reflection before making a conscious and well- -thought electoral decision. The aim of this paper is to seek the answer to the question whether Polish voters – in the era of development of modern information and communication technologies – find it rational to have the institution of election silence as an element of the electoral system. In the article, I present the findings of the study carried out as part of a nationwide project, Political Preferences. The research was conducted in autumn 2019 by way of a survey method on the representative random sample of 1,072 adult residents of Poland.

The article presents the results of an empirical study, whose purpose was to identify preferences for art motifs among fourth-grade primary school students in Slovenia and Croatia. From the viewpoint of the total sample (n=1,467), the study results have shown statistically significant gender-related differences in four out of five cases. No differences were observed with regard to social stratum. With regard to individual countries, statistically significant differences were noted in three out of the five cases. It was expected that there would be no differences in preferences for art motifs between Slovenian and Croatian students.

This article presents the results of the empirical research on the relationship between political preferences and environmental awareness among the inhabitants of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. The author’s aim was to answer whether respondents’ political preferences transfer to their environmental attitudes - how they perceive the hierarchy of beings and the moral meaning of nature in particular, but also, their willingness to pro-ecological attitude and their readiness to sacrifice their own business for the interest of the environment.
Niniejszy artykuł zawiera raport z badań empirycznych nad relacjami zachodzącymi pomiędzy preferencjami politycznymi a świadomością ekologiczną mieszkańców województwa kujawsko-pomorskiego. Autor postawił przed sobą zadanie uzyskania odpowiedzi na pytanie o to, czy deklarowane przez respondentów preferencje polityczne przekładają się na ich przekonania ekologiczne dotyczące sposobów postrzegania hierarchii bytów i znaczenia moralnego przyrody, a także gotowość do zachowań proekologicznych i poświęceń własnego interesu dla dobra środowiska przyrodniczego.

The aim of the study was a comparative analysis of reading preferences of elementary school younger learners in Slovakia, Czech Republic and Poland. A questionnaire of own design was used, based on an initial exploration by means of focus interviews. Respondents were divided by their reading levels. The research sample consisted of 693 Slovak, 254 Czech and 248 Polish learners. Findings indicated similarities, but also considerable differences offering a possibility to draw knowledge on international research of learners’ reading preferences. The most important finding was the difference of the Polish sample correlating with the best results of Polish learners in international measurements.

W opracowaniu scharakteryzowano przemiany w zakresie wartości cenionych przez dzieci i młodzież z pogranicza polsko-czeskiego – odwołując się do sformułowanych przez R. F. Ingleharta hipotez niedoboru i socjalizacji. Zakładają one – po pierwsze – że priorytetowe wartości jednostki odzwierciedlają jej środowisko społeczno-ekonomiczne, a przedmiotom, których jest w nim stosunkowo niewiele, nadaje się subiektywnie wyższą wartość i – po drugie – podstawowa struktura wartości jednostki odzwierciedla warunki, w jakich została ona wychowana. Przeprowadzenie badań w latach 1990–1991 oraz 2014–2015 – z wykorzystaniem strategii porównań podłużnych, opartej na kryterium czasu – umożliwiło poznanie czynników oddziałujących na preferencje aksjologiczne młodego pokolenia, jak również przedstawienie względnej dynamiki zmiany i uchwycenie wyznaczających ją mechanizmów.
What has been described in this study are the transformations of the values appreciated by children and youth in the Polish-Czech borderland. This is done in reference to Ronald F. Inglehart’s hypotheses of scarcity and socialization. They assume that: firstly, the individual’s priority values reflect his/her socio-economic environment and the relatively scarce objects in this environment are attributed a subjectively bigger value, and secondly – that the individual’s basic structure of values reflects the conditions in which s/he has been brought up. The studies, conducted in 1990–1991 and 2014–2015 with the use of longitudinal comparisons based on the time criterion, allowed for recognizing the determinants of the young generation’s axiological preferences, for presenting the relative dynamics of the change as well as for capturing the mechanisms which determine this change.

In the philosophical-pedagogical analysis of the undertaken issues, some theoretical and methodological conceptualizations have been applied that refer to Paweł Boski’s theory of the cultural identity based on values and practices in bi-or multicultural socialization and Harold J. Noah’s model of the comparison of academic education. The assumption was also made that the research into the quality of life of Polish and Ukrainian university students enables one to learn the way(s) in which students understand themselves, the others and the world - the way(s) anchored in their own experience and culture. The undertaken studies also address the important problem of forming students’ identity in the stage of the so called emerging adulthood. It occurs in the countries where a knowledge-based economy dominates and where the intensive changes both decrease the young’s motivation to engage in adult roles and make the young postpone them.
