The JDC is an American Jewish organization that assists overseas Jewish communities in distress. It is responsible to “American Jewry” and those organizations that fund it. Bauer (1974, 19) argued that the JDC has been guided by its founding “pledge of impartiality – it steers clear of political involvements” and takes pride in being “probably the only really non-partisan organization in Jewish life.” This paper examines the role of the JDC in caring for Soviet émigrés who left on visas for Israel but chose to resettle elsewhere. They were known as “dropouts” (Noshrim in Hebrew). It also deals with the JDC policy toward recently settled Russian Jews who left Israel to resettle elsewhere. In its work with Soviet Jewish emigres did the JDC serve the interests of the Israeli government, its donors and or the emigres? Did the JDC abide by its pledge of impartiality? Did the JDC try to force them to resettle in Israel against their wishes? The paper focuses on the spring of 1976 when the number of dropouts outnumbered those resettling in Israel. This led to a joint committee of Israelis and American Jews to coordinate a response. The ‘freedom of choice’ debate ensued; should Soviet Jews resettle in Israel or have the freedom to choose where to resettle? The findings here are based on archival records in the JDC, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), the CJF (Jewish federations) and the American Jewish Committee (AJC). The author also conducted interviews and reviewed secondary sources. The paper should contribute to a better understanding of the JDC and its past ties to Israel and the American Jewish community.

This paper investigated the landscape, attractiveness, and contours of teleworking in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study adopted purely qualitative techniques. The sample size was 40 participants purposively selected in 25 work organizations in both private and public sectors. Study instruments were Key Informant Interviews conducted with 20 Human Resource Practitioners and In-Depth Interviews conducted with 20 senior staff members of the selected organizations. Most organizations in Lagos were forced to adopt teleworking during or after the 2020 lockdown and its landscape in Lagos state has become wider and smoother. Study also revealed that teleworking is attractive to employees in terms of avoiding road/traffic challenges, enhances work-family balance and a viable option for individuals living with disabilities, pregnant and nursing mothers. To employers, it enhances business continuity, saves cost, and reduces concerns about disease and illnesses. The study identifies poor technological and infrastructural base, absence of labour policy framework, organizational policy, capacity building, data security issues as contours hindering effective teleworking in Lagos State. The practice of teleworking has been firmly established in Lagos State, Nigeria. Governments and Employers of labour stand to gain immensely from the adoption of teleworking if relevant social and organizational policies are made available, as well as making the operating economic and technological environments more conducive.

At the turn of the twentieth and twenty-first century, the problem of the Muslim minority in Europe became a significant problem in religious, social and political terms. In this publication, we present the characteristics of the presence of Muslims in France only in terms of religious and organizational backgrounds. By analyzing the first aspect, the importance of Islam as the second religion in terms of the number of believers in France is shown. The second aspect describes the characteristics of some important Muslim organizations in France.

Despite the fact that Switzerland does not formally belong to the European Union, it has always been strongly associated with the above organization at various levels. At first, after World War II, the contact was established with considerable caution which resulted from economic and trade contacts of Swiss government with Germany and Italy maintained during the war. First international contracts were related to the economic sphere and later on expanded by addressing the sphere of social issues such as legal system, culture, charity, science and education. At present, due to bilateral agreements, Switzerland has been integrated with the European Union even more than its newest Member States, i.e. Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia, which confirms the significant flexibility of this Community as well as its great possibility to adapt to each of its Members. According to the Swiss, the greatest obstacle preventing this country from joining the EU is the upholding principle of eternal neutrality, although the importance of which has decreased over the years, it has been deeply rooted in Swiss mentality. Moreover, another factor preventing Switzerland from joining the EU is its strong economy as Swiss membership would result in the need to pay relatively higher contributions than that of other Member States of the Community. Although the contacts between the EU and Switzerland have been significantly intensified, the prospect of membership still seems relatively remote, all the more as bilateral agreements as well as participation in the Schengen area since 2008 make both parties satisfied and for now none of them intends to seek new solutions.

The study presents the results of research based on the review and identification of significant talent management methods used in different types of organizations. The study interprets the results of research conducted in 2016 on the set of 301 various companies operating in the Czech Republic. The authors of the study assume that the efficiency of the whole talent management should be based on the efficiency of its well-chosen methods. The research showed that there is a different understanding and application of talent management methods by organization management according to the size and legal form of the organization (company).

The article examines the concept and legal aspects of creating a special international tribunal regarding the crime of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. Although this research topic first emerged after the events of 2014 related to the aggressive actions of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea, scientific interest in the study of this problem increased after the criminal full-scale invasion of Russia on the territory of the sovereign state of Ukraine. The author considers the evolution of creation of select military tribunals, the specifics of their activities, and the established practice of prosecuting the crimes of aggression. Additionally, the analysis focuses on statements regarding the idea of creating a special international tribunal for the Russian Federation for crimes of aggression against Ukraine. It is substantiated that the highest form of international justice in the modern world is a tribunal, as it provides for a public and inevitable punishment and it acts as one of the elements guaranteeing the inviolability of the international legal order at the same time. The creation of a special tribunal for the Russian Federation will be the impetus for new approaches to expand the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court so that it can prosecute acts of aggression, and Ukraine will serve as an example for responding to aggression. The author determined, the establishment of an international tribunal for the first time is a complex process because it is often necessary to find new and completely original solutions to many legal and practical problems facing the tribunal. Moreover, the sum total of these decisions should provide the basis for a reasonable and universally applicable jurisdiction for future generations, at the same time allowing the tribunal to take into account the social, cultural and historical context of the conflict in question and to reflect this context to some extent in its decisions and practice.

The purpose of this article is to present the results of the research on the issues discussed in the educational initiatives undertaken by Polish non-governmental organizations. The results of the scientific explorations presented in the paper are the outcome of the PhD research project Intercultural Non-formal Education in Poland on the Example of Non-governmental organizations activity. The project included surveying 65 leaders of different non-governmental organizations from three cities with different cultural make-ups, i.e. Bialystok, Poznan and Warsaw. The study was conducted in 2010 – 2012 according to the eclectic research approach, which allowed gathering quantitative and qualitative data. Based on the analysis of the empirical material, the author of the article presents: the issues tackled in the initiatives carried out by Polish non-governmental organizations, the structure of their implementation and the types of activities undertaken (in view of the issues analysed). An outline of the research problems precedes the discussion on the research results.

Various social, political and economic contexts give rise to visibly different concepts of security and these differences make one ponder on the limitations of traditional concepts of democratization and political development. Scientists, politicians and activists are now ever more boldly beginning to ask difficult but necessary questions about the appropriate dynamics of the processes of creating security and about the priorities adopted within them, searching for ways on which these processes could be co-created by traditional, local visions of needs of citizens’ safe life. The review of scholarly literature and political journalism addressing security points out new spheres of debates and subjects of controversy within this discipline. In a situation where in security-related processes governments cannot be the only ones that dominate, a question about the possibility of expanding activities with non-governmental organizations arises.

Within a wealth of literature on the subject of the social and political participation of immigrants little has been said about the issue of the mount of immigrants’ engagement in immigrant organizations and its conditions. This paper, based on analysis of CAWI survey of 3500 Polish immigrants describes participations of Poles abroad in Polish immigrant organizations. It also defines three sets of factors determining the amount of engagement. The analysis of empirical data shows that the engagement of Poles abroad in activities of Polish immigrant organizations is limited. Hypotheses concerning factors determining participation in Polish immigrant organizations has been positively verified. Both previous experience of social participation in Poland as well as contemporary experience in country of residence positively influence engagement in Polish immigrant organizations. Also the relation between the country of residence, length of stay, as well as the year of with the level of activity in Polish immigrant organizations emigration has been observed. The participation in those organizations tends also to be influenced by such characteristics of a migrant like: age, size of the locality in which a migrant lives after migration, and type of professional activity. Only two of the assumed variables: size of the origin locality and material situation have not been related to participations of Poles abroad in Polish immigrant organizations.

Artykuł przedstawia powstanie i działalność Koła Naukowego Edukacji Międzykulturowej, organizacji studenckiej istniejącej od dziewięciu lat na cieszyńskim Wydziale Etnologii i Nauk o Edukacji Uniwersytetu Śląskiego w Katowicach. Udział studentów w konferencjach naukowych, projektach międzynarodowych i podejmowane przez nich inicjatywy pozwalają poszerzać wiedzę i zdobywać umiejętności społeczne (w tym międzykulturowe), organizacyjne, menedżerskie, a także naukowe. Okazują się one przydatne w dalszej pracy zawodowej, przez co wielu członków KNEM po studiach zostaje cenionymi przez pracodawców specjalistami.
The article presents the foundation and activity of the Science Club of Intercultural Education, a students’ organization which has existed for nine years at the Faculty of Ethnology and Education of the University of Silesia in Katowice. Students’ participation in academic conferences or international projects and the initiatives which they undertake allow for broadening the knowledge and for acquiring social (also intercultural), organizational, managing and scientific skills. They turn out to be useful in further professional career, therefore after graduation many club members become specialists who are highly valued by employers.

This article reflects a number of issues connected with the organizations of Ahiism (brotherhood) and Futuwwa (bravery, generosity) which have played an important role in the socio-political life of Azerbaijan and some other issues connected with their interrelations. It should be noted that Ahiism emerged in the Middle Ages as a result of the merge of the ideas of Futuwwa and Tasawwuf (Sufism), which were spread in a scattered form among the Arabs and Persians, adoption of Islam and the popular Turkic traditions of Alplıq (bravery), Aranlik (bravery and generosity). The Azerbaijanis also played an important role in the formation of Ahiism. From organizational, structural and ideological point of view Ahiism resembled the movement of Futuwwa very much, nevertheless, it was essentially a different organization from the point of view of its social base, idiosyncratic organizational-structural form, mission and other features, and all this differed it from Futuwwa.
Статья посвящена исследованию схожих и отличающихся сторон между организациями Ахизма и Футувват, широко распространенных в Исламской географии. В формировании идейных и организационно – структурных основ ахизма большую роль сыграло движение футувват. Схожесть между этими организациями возникли, в основном, как раз из этой близости. Но ахийство, по своей социальной базе, идейным основам, организационно-структурным особенностям, миссии и т.д. являлся совершенно отличающиеся структурой. В то время как Футувват придавал большее значение моральным принципам, индивидуальным героическим и военным качествам, Ахизм отличался больше экономическим уклоном. В организации футувват, члены, как правило, выбирались среди богатых, элитных слоев общества, в то время как в Ахизме при приеме в членства никаких дискриминаций по имущественному цензу не допускалось. Сердцевины организации Ахи составляли ремесленники, являющиеся по имущественному положению средние и относительно бедные слои общества. В отличие от футувватцев, ахисты жили только за счет своих трудовых заработков. Жить собственным трудом, честно зарабатывать свой хлеб являлся одним из фундаментальных принципов ахизма. Одним из главных условий ахизма являлся то, что наряду с высокими моральными качествами, кандидат обязательно должен был владеть определенным ремеслом, в то время как в фтувватизме членам не обязательно было иметь какое-либо ремесло. В организациях ахи дух взаимопомощи, взаимовыручки, гостеприимства был более сильным. По сравнении с организациями Футувват, Ахизм обладал более совершенной структурой и работающими механизмами для обеспечения взаимопомощи и солидарности.

The subject of the text concerns various forms and methods of the participation of selected Ukrainian youth organizations, which were particularly active in 2018. The author discusses the basic theoretical assumptions by analyzing the issue of participation in relation to Polish and foreign literature of the subject. Then, she describes the research material and methods of analysis of the collected empirical data. In the last part of the article, the author presents the most important conclusions regarding the „soft” and „hard” forms and methods of the participation of six youth organizations operating in Ukraine.
Problematyka tekstu dotyczy różnych form i metod partycypacji wybranych ukraińskich organizacji młodzieżowych, które były szczególnie aktywne w 2018 r. Autorka omawia podstawowe założenia teoretyczne analizując zagadnienie partycypacji w odniesieniu do polskiej i zagranicznej literatury przedmiotu. Następnie opisuje materiał badawczy oraz metody analizy zgromadzonych danych empirycznych. W ostatniej części artykułu autorka prezentuje najważniejsze konkluzje dotyczące „miękkich” i „twardych” form oraz metod partycypacji sześciu badanych organizacji młodzieżowych działających na terenie Ukrainy.

Opis:
The development of civil society in Poland was one of the goals of the political transformation in 1989. Since then, Polish interest in social issues has grown, although not to the extent expected, not fully realizing its potential. Since 2015, compared to previous years, there seems to be an increasing willingness among Poles to engage in social matters, evident through protest movements and demonstrations, and after 2022, also through involvement in humanitarian aid for refugees from Ukraine. To present the dynamics, evaluate, and outline a forecast for the development of Polish civil society, the article starts by presenting the evolution of the concept and its significance for democracy. It also highlights practical manifestations of civil society functioning. Drawing on statistical research conducted by CBOS and GUS regarding the social engagement of Poles, as well as Elżbieta Korolczuk’s article on the nature of contemporary civil society in Poland, the article analyzes trends and changes in the activation of Poles, pointing out areas of greatest interest. The paper also presents challenges faced by contemporary civil society to effectively outline potential directions of its development.

The article is presenting axiological conditions of the activity of paramilitary organizations and military classes in context of recruitment. Przedmiotem artykułu są aksjologiczne uwarunkowania działalności organizacji paramilitarnych oraz szkół z klasami mundurowymi. W ramach artykułu autor prezentuje narrację towarzyszącą tworzeniu oraz działalności podmiotów edukacyjnych i szkoleniowych. Celem praktyczno-wdrożeniowym jest wskazanie rozróżnienia między pobudkami kandydatów do szkół z klasami wojskowymi oraz kandydatów do organizacji paramilitarnych. Zauważone zostały różnice w podejściu do kandydatów wynikające z odmiennych grup docelowych.
