Opis:
The multitude of defining the concept of security is related to the fact that representatives of various fields of science describe and perceive this phenomenon from the point of view of terminology, own knowledge, as well as from the scope of their discipline. For many security is a belief that you are out of the reach of any threat. Based on the Copenhagen school theory, the essence of the objective and subjective understanding of security was emphasized. Against this background, the movement of people was analyzed as a security issue. Poles living in Great Britain are more often in contact with this issue than in their country of origin. The scale of threats is extremely different. For Poles migrating to the UK, the most dangerous threats appear to be in the social sphere. The aim of the article is to analyze the phenomenon of Polish migration to Great Britain after 2004. Additionally, the process of describing security and its transition from the sphere of theory to practice was attempted. Although in the open public space, on city streets, parks and squares, there are personal threats related to crimes, as well as to social threats – attacks and assaults caused by frustrated and aggressive groups or individuals, Poles feel safe. Despite knowing about terrorism or manifestations of social or cultural phobias, Poles migrate to Great Britain. In addition, the article attempts to prove that the technological extension of public space leads to a sense of greater security.

Opis:
A Transylvanian Prince Gyula I made a visit to Constantinople in 953, where he was baptised. The Patriarch of Constantinople ordained a monk Hierotheus the Hungarian as a bishop, who later baptised the family of Gyula. He also initiated the process of christianising his principality. Gyula’s daughter Sarolt married the Hungarian Prince Géza. Sarolt was very vigorous and she had a strong infl uence upon her husband. It was her who convinced Géza to invite Christian missionaries to Hungary in 972. She also established the fi rst Hungarian bishopric in her residence of Veszprém. This bishopric was consecrated to the Archangel Michael, to whom also the church in the residence of her father in Alba Iulia (Gyulafehérvár) was dedicated, later rebuilt and honoured with the title of the episcopal cathedral. Michael was not the only patron saint to protect Veszprém. There was also a rotunda of Saint George, considered a very old one at the time. Sarolt wanted to consecrate some church to Saint Michael in Veszprém, because she used to pray to him in Alba Iulia. That was the reason the bishopric of Veszprém did not accept the older dedication to Saint George. The cult of Saint George was very common in Bavaria during the nineth century, yet we have no evidence of Saint George veneration on the territory of Bavarian border marks – and for the same reason there is no evidence of it among the dedications of Pribina’s and Kocel’s churches in Pannonia. The rotunda in Veszprém was defi nitely not erected in Carolingian times and its dedication was not of Bavarian origin. Therefore, we can assume that is of Great Moravian origin. Another member of the Arpád dynasty was given a name Severin (Hungarian: Szörény) at his baptism in 972, but an old-Hungarian chronicler wrote down his name in the distorted form ‘Zyrind‘. Severin was the Duke of Szomogy, just as his son and successor, i.e., Koppány. Karolda, Sarolt’s older sister is believed to have been his wife. The Hungarian Prince Géza had younger brother Michael. The name Michael, which he took at his baptism in 972, was very popular in Bulgaria already in 866, when Bulgarian Prince Boris took this name at his baptism. If Michael took a Christian name popular in Bulgaria, he could have fulfi lled a wish of his Christian wife of probably Bulgarian origin, further indicated by her sons’ names, i.e., Ladislav and Vazul, which are derivations from the names Vladislav and Vasilij. Michael’s Bulgarian wife, as well as Géza’s Sarolt and Zyrind’s Karold, were Christians from their childhood and they persuaded their pagan husbands to accept Christian baptism. Members of the Arpadian state, who received their baptisms in 972, could be infl uenced by the impact of Great Moravian and Carolingian Christianity, which partially outlasted in the old pre-Hungarian centres, for example in Nitra, Bratislava, Blatnohrad, Veszprém and Pécs.

The article investigates an episode from Giacomo Casanova’s life concerning his stay in Wrocław, which was described in his biography entitled Histoire de ma vie. The analysis takes into consideration the structure of the whole biography. The main purpose of this article is to find in this work the most characteristic features of Casanova’s writing, as well as information on this period, its main representatives and the historical background of Wrocław of that time. Casanova, leaving Poland after a duel with Franciszek Ksawery Branicki, decides to go to Dresden, where his family lives, spending three days in Wrocław. In this short time Casanova makes the acquaintance of Abbot Bastiani, a very interesting person. At the same time, Casanova meets a young girl and once more begins to believe in love. The part of his biography concerning Wrocław provides an opportunity to analyse psychological aspects of these two people.

Opis:
From the position of Christian rulers, faith expansion concerned not only individuals, but also entire communities. A decision appertaining to the choice of Rome or Constantinople as a place of importation of Christianity was both signifi cant and political. Following a number of failed attempts of Christian missions among the Slavic tribes, the ninth and eleventh century saw the emergence of the foundations of statehood along with a number of conversions acts of rulers and their milieux. The eighth century saw the development of stronghold centres on the Morava river (Mikulčice, Staré Město, Uherske Hradiste). The strongholds were rapidly remodelled in the late eighth/early ninth century, hence even prior to the Moravians putting in an appearance in Frankfurt in 822. At the time in the area of western Slovakia occurred the most aggressive expansion into the territory of the Avars located on the left bank of the Danube and new Moravian strongholds (Pobedim, Devin, Smolenice–Molpír) were erected east of the White Carpathians, at least as far as The Váh. These phenomena can be regarded as social upheavals within the political elite of the Moravians, centred on the Morava River, which resulted in the expansion into the territories in south-western Slovakia occupied by the Avars and the ensuing construction of new stronghold centres. That expansion presumably presaged the creation of a base against the Khaganate in Pannonia. The erection of the fi rst churches in the area on the initiative of the princes and nobles attests to the scale of the changes which occurred among the Moravians, having probably stemmed from very intensive, yet unmentioned in written sources, contacts between the tribal Moravian aristocracy and the Frank Counts from the borderland. It is reasonable to conjecture that there was not any organised mission, as evidenced by the ethnical diversity of the Moravian clergy emerging at the time. It consisted, apart from the Bavarians, also of the clergy from Italy and the Greeks of the Dalmatian cities.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the problem of further steps that Great Britain could take to break the stalemate in which it found itself after June 2016 when the British decided to leave the European Union. Despite making this decision, it turned out that its implementation was unexpectedly difficult, which in turn caused a political crisis in Great Britain that has not been seen in this country for a long time. The aim of the article is to try to find answers to two research questions. First of all, could the Brexit process – both from a legal and political point of view – have been stopped and reversed, for example, by holding a second referendum? Secondly, whether, since Brexit has become a fact, we can expect a quick return of Great Britain to the European Union (“Breturn”). Using the method of institutional and legal analysis and the content analysis method, the Author tries to prove the thesis that the idea of a second referendum seemed unlikely, and hence – Brexit was rather inevitable. As for “Breturn” – this scenario also looks unrealistic, as it would involve various legal and political obstacles as well as practical inconveniences for Great Britain.

Ecological barriers to economic growth and the Third Great Depression are usually only seen as a threat. I argue that they can and should be treated as an opportunity to overcome the model of civilization of wastefulness and military expansionism, by creating and implementing a higher stage of progress: a civilization of rational sufficiency. Premises of such progress are now visible – not only in the virtual ideas and projects, but in the real innovations. Such progress requires changes not only in economics but also in political relations – democracy understood not only as the right to co-decision, but also as a duty of responsibility for social and ecological consequences of economic and political decisions.

This article aims to indicate the sources of problems in the field of governance and politics in the African Great Lakes Region. The countries of this region play an essential role in the global socio-political and economic system. Their development is hampered by numerous external and internal conflicts resulting from both the historical and contemporary problems of the countries. Colonialism had a major impact on the development of African countries. It manifested itself, among other things, in the spread of political domination. Adopting state management patterns from European culture and attempt to transplant them on African ground without understanding local cultural conditions contributed too much post-colonial fresh and modern conflict. Examples of this are failures to establish liberal democracy and its crises in the African Great Lakes Region.

Opis:
One of the most important factors affecting British politics is its membership to the European Communities (EC) and later the European Union (EU), which has already had massive implications for this country. The relationship between Britain and Europe has always been problematic. In Britain there has been little enthusiasm for European integration per se, and equally little understanding of the enthusiasm felt on the continent. Europe has been seen as a menace rather than an opportunity and very few British politicians have attempted to argue (as is commonplace on the continent) about monetary union, for instance, it is the only way of regaining control over financial policy. The European idea of pursuing economic integration as a means to political union has also been met with blank incomprehension, if not outright hostility. Britain has always been attempting to slow down the process of integration and, consequently, has often fallen behind and had no choice but to catch up. However, the portrayal of Britain as a “difficult partner” or “laggard leader” in European affairs is only partly justified. Based on its specific understanding of national sovereignty, Britain has developed a much more pragmatic and instrumental approach towards Europe than most of its partners on the continent.3Nevertheless, the country was a strong driving force in favor of integration in many crucial policy fields like the single market or trade policy. According to Alan Milward, the process of European integration entails “pooling” the sovereignty in order to protect national interests and extend national governments’ control of their own destinies. In Britain, contrary to the continent, national interests dictated a different line and it was only when exclusion from the Communities appeared to threaten them that the then British government began to accept the need for membership. The very different motivation behind British entry ensured that the British aims inside the Communities would be limited or “defensive”. The most controversial aspect of Britain’s membership of the EC has always related to “erosion” of its sovereignty.

The article is devoted to the problem of the place ascribed to liberal education (and most of all to humanities as constituting its essential part) in contemporary political thought. In times when many rightist as well as leftist thinkers diagnose a crisis of liberal democracy and its educational system, displaying much anxiety about the still-lowering level of citizens’ willingness to participate in a public sphere, some of them propose their diagnosis of such situation and postulates of reform aimed at raising the level of citizens’ engagement in democratic life. One of the means to achieving that goal is implementation of the idea of liberal education, which might work in favor of students’ character development, their acquisition of a holistic view of reality, and their consciousness of the fact of overlapping character of relations binding individual and communal wellbeing. The article aims at presenting theoretical ways of defending humanities in face of contemporary restatement of the role of liberal education in Western societies. The course of argument is following: firstly the transition made in XXth century from “liberal education” to “education to liberalism” (resulting in specialization and vocational character of science) will be traced. Then the opinions of critics to such model of education will be shown, focusing on the representatives of three political doctrines: republicanism, communitarianism and liberalism. In case of each of these group of thinkers their characteristic attitude towards humanities, will be displayed.
