Opis:
Many European children begin to learn a (foreign) language at a very early age, and early foreign language learning has thus evolved into a paradigm that seems to have settled as a steady companion of everyday school life. The aim of this contribution, which addresses the topic of early foreign language learning from the participant’s, i.e. the student’s, point-of-view, is to determine students’ reasons for learning a foreign language, as articulated by the students themselves. The research analysis will investigate the motivational aspects that influence learning, and will also illustrate and interpret the research results of a study in which approx. 300 students aged 6-10 years from 9 different countries participated. The analysis will not be country specific, but will highlight common motivational features that recur in all the students’ replies and reveal – as expected-not a linguistic, but a decisively pragmatic focus in the process of language learning.

Previous research examined only the role of interpersonal competition in academic self-handicapping. Therefore, from the multidimensional perspective, the goal of the presented research on academic self-handicapping was to determine the role of (1) different attitudes to competition, (2) the reasons that motivate people for competition and (3) the reasons for avoidance of competition. We also aimed at distinguishing the roles of different types of motivation for education in academic self-handicapping, according to the level of self-determination. Participants were 748 high school students. In academic self-handicapping the results confirmed the relevance of distinguishing among different dimensions of competitiveness. Those denoted by selfworth protection proved to be more characteristic of academic self-handicapping than those depicted by testing one’s own limits and by high importance of the quality of task accomplishment. Regarding motivation for education, amotivation played the important role. Intrinsic motivation correlated with academic self-handicapping negatively, but extrinsic motivation showed no significant correlation. Important implications for refinements of pedagogical practice are discussed.

Psychometrically sound and practical measures of school value, teacher autonomy, and teacher motivation were developed. Further, this study examined relationships among school value, teacher autonomy, and teacher motivation and compared the differences between elementary and secondary school teachers in those variables. Findings showed that those measures are reliable and valid. Also, elementary school teachers scored higher in those three variables than secondary school teachers. Particularly, school value and teacher autonomy were significant predictors of teacher motivation. The implication for school organization is to enhance positive school value and provide teachers with more autonomy, which will encourage teacher motivation.

This paper presents the results of our research related to the motivation of the adults when learning. Our analysis is focused on the comparison of the motivational features of adults learning process in four Eastern and Central European countries (Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine). The research is based on a qualitative survey. We used questionnaire of our design to learn about their motivation to participate in trainings, their interest and the possible hindrances. The subjects of the study are adult learners from the mentioned countries (N=556) who were in contact with the research partner institutions. Our results show that the majority of the respondents looked for pragmatic opportunities in learning useful for work and life, but also wanted to develop their interests and expand their knowledge. No country-specific characteristics were found, and potential differences were only observable in some cases.

This paper aims to shed some light on the correlation between teacher stress, on the one hand, and motivation of teachers and students, on the other hand – observed in an EFL environment. The data sample comprising responses given by EFL teachers and students from the primary education cycle was collected via the teacher stress measurement scale and motivation for learning scale, applied for teachers and students, respectively. Apart from the basic descriptive statistics used to describe the relationship between the variables, the paper’s methodology is also characterised by applying the Pearson correlation coefficient. The results led to interesting conclusions; while, as expected, workload directly affects stress levels of teachers, who, following the results, are highly motivated to work with teenagers, contrary to what could be believed, teacher motivation is not directly related to student motivation, what could be further analysed in the future studies.

This paper is a Central European contribution to the current knowledge of Erasmus students‘ motivations. It takes as its starting point the fact that one of the reasons for studying in a foreign country is learning about different cultures. 30 Erasmus students from 8 European countries, enrolled in Museum Education course in two academic years at the Faculty of Education, University of Ljubljana, participated in the research. The analysis of qualitative data, collected by individual interviews, a focus group and written personal reflections, revealed that, when making specific country and study decisions, students are driven by three motivational factors: discovery, change and curiosity. The research, done from the perspective of cultural heritage, additionally indicated how geography shapes the cultural experience of Erasmus students and what role museum and heritage site visiting play in it.

This study introduced an anthropomorphized robot-assisted instructional tool that we developed for English as a foreign language (EFL) learning and assessed the effectiveness of robot-assisted English learning. An experimental design was adopted in this study and a total of 53 Taiwanese students in the third grade of elementary school participated in the experiment, including: one class consisting of 28 students, which was labeled as the experimental group, while another class of 25 students was labeled as the control group. There were two kinds of data collection that were used in this study: two tests (listening-and-acting as well as questioning-and-answering tests) and a questionnaire (learning material motivation scale). On the whole, the experimental group performed better than the control group on the listening-and-acting as well as on the questioning-and-answering tests. Additionally, the experimental group had higher learning material motivation than the control group, inclusive of attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction domains. The overall results suggest a new paradigm about our applications in teaching and learning English for Taiwanese EFL elementary school students.

In recent years we have been able to observe the phenomenon of Fifty Shades of Grey. This poses questions about why the primary, female target audience liked the book. In the presented study we asked what aspects of the book attract female attention, what they despise and how the book assessment relates to sexual satisfaction or motivation. 217 respondents participated in the study. The variables analysed in the study included book assessment, sexual motivations, satisfaction and other features characterising individual sexuality. A positive assessment was negatively correlated with the respondents’ emotional satisfaction. The respondents who read similar books assessed Fifty Shades of Grey higher and reported lower emotional satisfaction compared to those who did not read such books.

The contribution presents results of the non-hierarchical cluster analysis of academic performance and aspects of achievement motivation of a sample of undergraduate students. The Achievement Motivation Questionnaire (AMQ) (Dotazník motivácie výkonu, Pardel, Maršálová, Hrabovská, 1984) was used as the research method. School success was established using the arithmetic mean of study results of 213 undergraduate students after completion of a term. In the AMQ, the Achievement Motive variable was focused on, consisting of the following aspects: achievementoriented behaviour, aspiration level, persever- ance at work, and future time orientation. The main aim of our research was to determine undergraduate student types by their academic performance and aspects of achievement motive. Based on the assessment of generated three to six-cluster solutions, the six-cluster solution appeared optimal, within which the following types of undergraduate students were identified: type of unused potential, unbalanced type, balanced type, type unoriented in time, academi- cally indifferent type, and industrious type.
