Polish education and research in Korea has become systematic since the establishment of the Department of Polish Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS). The Department of Polish Studies at HUFS is the only academic department in Korea which teaches and studies the politics, economy, history, and culture of Poland, as well as the Polish language and literature. Since its establishment in 1987, the department has produced more than 800 graduates. The Department of Polish Studies forms and maintains a close relationship with universities in Poland. It also makes continuous effort for more students to study the Polish language at universities in Poland.

This paper is a report of some studies conducted by the author in the Roma community in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. After a brief introduction and characteristics of the surveyed group, the theoretical basis of the research and the methodological approach was presented. The project was supposed to be an attempt to show the difference between the education of Roma and of the dominant community in their country of residence. The research objective of the project was to identify the Roma perception of education and school duty, to identify and understand the relationship between the Roma identity and their relation to education and participation. Three areas were analysed: identities, culture, and education. The identification of their identities, their participation in culture and the education of the culturally dominant group are indicated. The conclusions concern the current situation of the Roma in these areas and possible recommendations or solutions for the future.

The study presents an assessment of the achievements and problems of intercultural pedagogy as an important educational (sub)discipline, which has been developing intensively in Poland – particularly since the 1990s. Against the background of a crisis of multicultural education, a new suggestion was presented aimed at overcoming its drawbacks in the form of the theoretical assumptions and practical solutions of intercultural education. However, understanding and accepting intercultural education depends on many factors – e.g., historical experiences, the developmental level of societies and the socio-political system. This necessitates presenting the essence of intercultural education as well as formulating its message both in Poland and worldwide.

The article shows the three aspects of research on the history of Slavonic studies in Poland: the developmental trends in Polish historiography, the scale of interest in the Slavs living in Poland and the position of the other Slavic nations in the Polish historiography. Education and research into the history of Slavonic studies in Poland in the past and in the present have taken place on three levels: the general developmental trends in Polish historiography as the leading Slavic historiography, the scale of interest in the other Slavs living in the Polish Commonwealth and the positions of the other Slavic states and nations in Polish historiography and historical education. Research into the history of Slavonic studies in Poland enjoys a noble tradition. Its origin goes back to the late 18th and the early 19th centuries. The research gained institutional support in the second half of the 19th century. In the 20th century, Polish Slavonic studies were rejuvenated in the interwar period, after 1945 (to the largest degree) and after 1989. This was reflected primarily in the notably increasing number of publications. Sadly, the quality of the research remains inferior.

As a part of its long-term strategic objectives, the European Union has set efforts to increase internal cohesion, improve economic growth levels, which will strengthen its position in the world economy area and also strengthen its competitiveness vis-à-vis other key players in the world economy. The level and quality of education, as well as the level and quality of science and research, are key areas for achieving this goal. Thus, the main attention at the level of the European Union and its individual member states should be focused on the implementation of systemic measures aimed at improving the educational process and research activities in all aspects (legislative, personnel, financial, procedural, etc.). The article focuses on the definition and analysis of the main developmental trends and tendencies in the area of education and support of science and research in the area of the European Union and the Slovak Republic.

Artykuł opisuje działalność naukowo-badawczą pracowników Instytutu Pedagogiki (Zakład Pedagogiki Ogólnej i Zakład Historii Nauki, Oświaty i Wychowania), którzy pod kierunkiem prof. UG dr. hab. Kazimierza Kossak- -Główczewskiego podejmują badania nad tematyką wielokulturowości (w tym wielokulturowości Pomorza Gdańskiego), edukacją regionalną (w tym edukacją kaszubską) i zagadnieniami międzykulturowości. Badania pedagogiczne stanowią zaledwie fragment szerszego nurtu badań humanistycznych i społecznych podejmowanych w Uniwersytecie Gdańskim i Instytucie Kaszubskim w Gdańsku. Badania te inspirowane są także praktyką edukacyjną. Stąd opis dotyczy także wybranych działań gdańskich socjologów, językoznawców, literaturoznawców i historyków problematyki kaszubskiej. Przywołano także wybrane nazwiska praktyków edukacji kaszubskiej.
The article depicts the research activity of employees of the Pedagogical Institute (General Pedagogy Department and Department of the History of Science and Education). They conduct research under the guidance of prof. Dr. UG. hab. Kazimierz Kossak-Główczewski. The main topics are multiculturalism (including multiculturalism of Gdansk Pomerania), regional education (including Kashubian education) and intercultural issues. Pedagogical research represents only a part of wider mainstream of humanistic and social studies which are conducted at the University of Gdansk and Kashubian Institute in Gdańsk. These studies are also inspired by educational practice. The description also applies to selected activities of Gdańsk sociologists, linguists, literary scholars and historians of Kashubian issues. The names of selected practitioners are listed.

W opracowaniu wskazuje się, że nauka stanowi podstawę rozwoju współczesnej cywilizacji informacyjnej. W Polsce postrzegana jest jako podstawowy czynnik rozwoju. Prowadzenie badań naukowych oraz edukacji osadzone jest w regulacji konstytucyjnej RP oraz porządku prawnym o zasięgu krajowym, europejskim i globalnym. Współczesne tempo przekształceń kulturowo-cywilizacyjnych powoduje rodzenie się niektórych sprzeczności w urzeczywistnianiu zasad konstytucyjnych oraz ogłaszanych wciąż nowych norm prawnych odnoszących się do szkolnictwa wyższego. Przestrzeń sprzeczności stanowi zwłaszcza urzeczywistnianie polskiej tradycji naukowej i akademickiej w powiązaniu za standardami europejskimi (Unii Europejskiej) oraz globalnymi (filozofii postmodernizmu).
The study indicates that science is the basis for the development of modern information civilization. It is regarded as an essential factor of development in Poland. Research and education are embedded in the constitutional regulation of the Republic of Poland and the legal order of the national, European and global level. Today’s pace of cultural and civilization transformation causes the occurrence of some contradictions in the achievement of the constitutional principles and communicated new legal standards to higher education. The space conflict means especially the achievement of the Polish scientific and academic traditions in connection with the European standards (European Union) and the global standards (philosophy of postmodernism).

In this article we explore and discuss the benefits of and the challenges that arise when using qualitative methods to conduct research internationally. We firstly discuss the relationship that writers of qualitative studies have with their readers and the implications of this for writing style. This is then followed by an overview of different aspects of data collection design. Within this section we discuss research that we have conducted, as part of a variety of international projects, using two qualitative approaches: systematic documentary research and interview. We then focus on using interview as a research method. This discussion regarding using interviews is divided into two chapters. Firstly, we discuss issues of access and sampling, then the interview itself and the analysis of interview data. The final sections involve a discussion of ways in which validity and reliability can be contextualised within qualitative studies, and also a discussion on generalisability and the possibility of theory generation. We conclude with sections on ethics and possible future directions for international qualitative studies into teacher education.

The paper presents practical execution of a course The Qualitative Research Methods at the two-year master’s programs 3+2 (MA) in pedagogy at the Faculty of Education of University of Białystok, conducted according to premises of research-based learning (RBL). The aim of The Qualitative Research Methods is to develop research competence of students in the area of designing, conducting and reporting qualitative research. During classes the students prepare team projects of qualitative research dealing with their everyday life. The paper presents the results of analysis of 161 projects of qualitative research done over three-year period (2017–2020). Methodological premises done by the students at the stage of research planning were reconstructed: 1) the topic of research; 2) the subject and the goals of research; 3) motivation of a subject choice; 4) research problems. The analysis allowed to establish that linking research with teaching enables students to gain knowledge of: 1) conducting scientific research; 2) the scientific field they study as well as the fields related to it; 3) team work (including one dealing with executing and presenting the scientific research); 4) themselves as researchers.

Action-Research Methodology and gender sensitivity linked to solve gender violence expression in prisons. The curriculum negotiation is a principle that allowed prisoners to engage in the activities in a voluntary way. Six months of field qualitative implementation-contrary to Blitzkrieg Ethnographyallowed us to get a real change of abilities as team trust, cooperation skills, decision-making process to avoid violence and to recognize the need the prisoners have to express their sentiments. Results show a success of critical Action Research and active participation of all the actors as well as the construction of a peace culture and a new field of work for pedagogues.

The contextual analysis including the embedding of phenomena in their logic of historical events is the basic task of comparative education. The article presents a new approach to comparative education in the Polish comparative discourse, based primarily on the ideas of pedagogical constructivism, opening a discussion on a new methodological paradigm, which is the place of historical context and memory in comparative research. Taking into account the importance of historical thinking in the methodology of comparative education is important insofar as it shows a wide context and allows for understanding and not only presenting phenomena.
Analiza kontekstualna, w tym osadzenie zjawisk w ich logice historycznych wydarzeń, jest podstawowym zadaniem pedagogiki porównawczej. W polskiej pedagogice porównawczej zwykło się przywiązywać mniejszą wagę do roli historii i znaczenia pamięci dla całościowego uchwycenia znaczeń analizowanych zjawisk i poszukiwania odpowiedzi na istotne problemy poznawcze. Tradycyjne podejście skoncentrowane jest na perspektywie teraźniejszej i przyszłej, i tak też postrzega się problemy edukacyjne w prowadzonym dyskursie pedagogiki porównawczej. Uwzględnianie znaczenia myślenia historycznego w metodologii pedagogiki porównawczej jest o tyle istotne, że ukazuje szeroki kontekst i pozwala na rozumienie, a nie wyłącznie przedstawianie zjawisk.

The aim of the article is to present selected themes that form part of the contemporary discourse on informal learning, which since the 1970s has dominated the scientific debate on learning, especially in the area of adult education. The authors, using Polish and German-language literature, outline areas of scientific and research interest, as well as tendencies in the contemporary approach to the learning processes of adolescents and adults. Moreover, they present exemplary results of research on informal learning, conducted within various fields: adult education, social pedagogy, economics and others. They indicate that separate treatment of human learning (division into formal, non-formal, and informal learning) is not always justified, and is not conducive to the analysis of learning processes.

Opis:
The existence of language varieties has a considerable impact on communication. They influence the interaction between language users from various centres due to the number of linguistic differences observed on the level of phonetics, spelling, grammar, lexis, and pragmatics. On the one hand, pluricentric languages connect people from various centres by using the “same” language, and on the other hand, they separate them by developing national norms. This article aims to demonstrate the importance of teaching language varieties in foreign language classes because the knowledge of national norms of pluricentric languages is essential in communication with people from various centres. Both English and German are pluricentric languages. Advanced language users should be aware of the differences between language varieties and be able to use the appropriate variety according to the communicative situation. The research undertaken in this article is meant to verify the undergraduate students’ knowledge of English and German varieties, emphasising terminology used in everyday life and their abilities to communicate in languages other than English or German.
