“Monitor Wołyński”
Opis:
The system transformation in 1989 in Poland brought about changes in the policy concerning Polish community abroad. One of its main objectives was to develop Polish language media in former Soviet Union states. Ukraine turned out to be an exceptionally difficult area for this activity. In the past the authorities did everything to forever wipe out Polish culture. Both communists and nationalists contributed to this fact. Many Ukrainian citizens of Polish nationality lost the spirit of their ancestors and the majority stopped speaking Polish. The development of Polish language press in this area was meant to solve those problems to some degree. Polish magazines and press is to increase contact with the forgotten language which is the carrier of Polish culture. An important objective of Polish press is to break the fear of speaking Polish, particularly in public places. Currently Polish press in Ukraine has an additional task as it is a true European barrier against Russian influence and protects the society against dangerous separating tendencies. Out of fourteen Polish language press titles which are issued in Ukraine a bilingual “Monitor Wołyński” plays a particular role. This bi-weekly has a circulation of five thousand and usually has 16 pages. It also has its online version. Its main objectives include: promoting the idea of European and Euro-Atlantic integration, familiarizing the Ukrainians with Poland (by informing them about Poland, her history, culture, traditions and events) informing the Poles about Volyn, facilitating dialogue among both nations and breaking stereotypes. Taking into account the contents presented in “Monitor Wołyński”, it can be said that the magazine fully meets its objectives and plays an educational and informative role. The news it covers reaches many Polish recipients who live in Ukrainian environment and cannot obtain such information from other sources. This magazine adequately shapes the national consciousness of the Poles living in Ukraine. It is a necessary source of information and both Polish and Ukrainian authorities should be interested in maintaining it.

Opis:
Since the early 1990s, the process of building a national identity among Polish minorities living on the territory of the Republic of Lithuania has clearly intensified. On the one hand, new Polish media initiatives have recently appeared in the digital space, where, until recently, the Polish community has not been widely represented. The first one is Wilnoteka - a multimedia web-based application, which uses the experience and materials of the television studio in Vilnius. Apart from Wilnoteka, Infopol has had an online versions of the daily Vilnius Kurier, Vilnius weekly and Vilnius Magazine for several years. In 2012 Delfi launched the project “Polish schools in Lithuania”, which resulted in a network of Internet portals building relationships between students and teachers in the Republic of Lithuania. Radio by the Neris has been one of the main centers of Polish thought and culture in Lithuania for over twenty years. It also operates several blogs and fanpages devoted primarily to Vilnius. However, the internet does not have professional media reaching to English speaking community of Polish origin who come from the present territory of the Republic of Lithuania and who live around the world. The editors of the Polish media pay attention to the fast expansion of Russian media in Lithuania and low activity of the Polish media. Therefore, we should consider what activities should be taken by the Polish authorities in order to form right conditions for the development of Polish television in Lithuania. Moreover, the media offer should be expanded and should include historical themes, for example the analysis of the fate of the Poles worldwide after 1945.

Opis:
An important instrument of the work of the Union of Poles in Belarus is its publication “Głos znad Niemna”, currently coming out with a note „in Exile”. Above all this weekly plays a significant social role: (1) – it causes the increase of the Polish minority rights; (2) – it strengthens the sense of national identity of our compatriots; (3) – transmits unadulterated (which means true) information to Poles in Belarus; (4) – supports the development of Polish community education; (5) – has an influence on the formation of pro-Polish youth attitudes in Belarus. „Głos znad Niemna na Uchodźstwie” („A voice from the Neman River in Exile” ) deepens personal and spiritual development of its readers. Its great importance is also appreciated by the Polish authorities and for this reason Polish people financially support the publication of this weekly.
