Advice from the "Liber de festis" can be an inspiration for Christians. This book is also a certificate of the vision Bl. Dorothy of Montau. Dorothea’s feast day is celebrated on 25 June.

    Opis:
    The paper is devoted to the physical aspects of asceticism and mystical experience of Prussian female mystic, the blessed Dorothy of Montau, analysed based on the detailed and vivid description of John Marienwerder. It makes an attempt of hypothetic identification of actual character of somatic effects of visions and mystical unions with Christ (sweating, hot flushes, pain) with special consideration of spiritual “stabbings” of heart (and other bodily parts) with arrows and spears of Divine Love and the symptom of enlarged womb. The interpretation by John Marienwerder, rooted in the medieval knowledge of physiology and set in categories of the bridal mysticism, made a considered apology of the Prussian recluse. In effort to reinterpret the somatic symptoms described by medieval theologian, this paper controverts also the attempt of their evaluation and analysis appearing in contemporary scientific literature employing methods of the so called psycho-history. Most likely neither the female psychology nor the religious hysteria were responsible for the carnal symptoms described by John Marienwerder. The mystic throughout all her life heroically struggled with the consequences of scalding she had suffered as a child and of multiple childbirth intertwined with carnal mortifications, however the main cause of her painful experiences most probably was a progressing heart disease. Its increasing untreated symptoms (natural history of illness) can be identified in the writings by John Marienwerder and analysed in the light of contemporary medical knowledge. The holiness of the recluse manifested not only in the sphere of asceticism, renouncement, zealous religious practice and contemplation, but also in transmitting the corporal suffering of somatic origin into the sphere of deep spiritual experience based on the idea of Compassio Christi.

    Przedłożony artykuł stanowi próbę ukazania duchowego wymiaru mistyki polskiej XX w., określanej tu jako mistyka nadwiślańska [św. Adam Albert Chmielowski, św. Faustyna Kowalska, św. Jan Paweł, ks. Józef Tischner]. Jej szczególny charakter został wyeksponowany w krytycznej konfrontacji ze zjawiskiem racjonalizmu i intelektualizmu, a także w porównaniu z uznanymi powszechnie nurtami mistyki w Europie. Autor wskazał na podstawowe cechy mistyki nadwiślańskiej, do których należą: personalizm i doloryzm. Posłużyły temu świadectwa mistyków jak również ich nauczanie. Swoiste „sklepienie” omawianego nurtu stanowi część poświęcona Miłosierdziu. Ma ono bowiem znaczenie fundamentalne dla rozwoju życia mistycznego chrześcijanina, a w przypadku przedstawicieli mistyki nadwiślańskiej było ono swoistym antidotum na zło XX wieku.
    The article makes an attempt to depict the spiritual dimension of 20th century Polish Mysticism which here is named as Vistula Mysticism (Saint Adam Albert Chmielowski, Saint Faustina Kowalska, Saint John Paul, Father Joseph Tischner). Its special character has been highlighted in critical confrontation with the phenomenon of rationalism and intellectualization as well as in comparison with commonly accepted trends of mysticism in Europe. The author indicated basic features of Vistula Mysticism which are, among others, personalism and dolorism. The testimonies of the mystics as well as their teaching served as the evidence and support for the article. The culmination of the discussed trend is the part about the Divine Mercy. It has fundamental meaning for development of mystical life of a Christian. Moreover, in case of representatives of Vistula Mysticism it was a specific antidote on evil in 20th century.

    The author of this article, based on the accounts of the blessed Dorothy of Montau [Dorothea von Montau] (1347–1394), a medieval mystic, related by a theologian and confessor John of Kwidzyn [Joannes Marienwerder] (1343–1417), in a little work entitled Septililium, firstly, analyzes the degrees of spiritual life in order to present the degrees of supernatural love against such background, which were part of the experience of the recluse from the cathedral church in Kwidzyn. Spiritual life as a relationship of love with God encompasses an entire life. The pluralism of aspects is very rich. Traditionally understood religious life goes through the process of cleansings of the senses, then, the acceptance of the virtues of faith, hope and love, in order to enter a path of contemplative prayer and mystical communion. Love is the essence of spiritual life. The blessed Dorothy of Montau enjoyed a gift of seven graces: the gift of love, the gift of the Holy Spirit, the love of the Eucharist, contemplation, perfectness of life and the gift of penitence. God is worthy of perfect love. The Master of Kwidzyn mentions more degrees and characteristics of that love recognized in the theological reflection and mystical acts of the blessed Dorothy of Montau. The love of God should be: “wide” so in the love of God it is loving all men, then, “ordered”, as well as “limitless.” Perfect love as spiritual disposition is “continuous”, “deeply rooted”, “brave”, “constant”, then, “heated”, “on fire and wanting”, “ascending high”, i.e., exceeding the love of man and “overwhelming” as the one leading to God by the way of Commandments, the wandering from “virtue into virtue” and “the path of advice” of the Holy Spirit. The perfect love according to God’s inspiration is the highest elevation of the human spirit strengthened by God that is why it has the features of “hurt”, it is “unsettling”, “impatient”, and even surprisingly “crazy”, “sweet”, “greedy”, always “insatiable”, and since it is limited by human existence, it is thus “longing”, “intoxicating”, “enriching”, “cheering up”. Spiritual love must radiate. Joannes Marienwerder employs the word “gushing”, it is ample so it is “overflowing” every man and it is, of course, “wise”, as well as “invincible”, is not subject to “fatigue”, it is “impossible to lose”, “immortal”, “great and heart-breaking”. Finally, in the treatise entitled On Love by the blessed Dorothy of Montau as many as thirty six degrees of love are listed and briefly characterized.

    Master Johannes of Marienwerder (Kwidzyn), meticulous, day after day, noted, interpreted and elaborated the words of Christ which addressed to Dorothea. Three books about her life was the results of Jan’s efforts. While reading, at the forefront, we could see wish to leave evidence of the authenticity of the experience of Bl. Dorothea and to transfer the chronology of important events of her life for child’s intenal growth. Another important task which has taken in “Vitae” and “Septililium” Johannes of Marienwerder, was to organize and characterize the theological dimension of mystical experiences that were attended by the blessed patron of Prussia and Pomezania. The third dimension, which can not be disregarded because it somehow lead to all previously mentioned, is the desire of education nad openness to the grace of contemplative life the nexr generation. Their ultimate goal is the generation of the sanctity of the masses of people, men and women who are nurturing the love of God and neighbors, fulfilling the duties of their state, following the way of perfection ot the Christian’s life. As Dorothea of Montau tried to do so, for their whole live.
