Opis:
This paper presents methods to plan predictive maintenance for precision assembly tasks. One of the key aspects of this approach is handling the abnormalities during the development phase, i.e. before and during process implementation. The goal is to identify abnormalities which are prone to failure and finding methods to monitor them. To achieve this, an example assembly system is presented. A Failure Mode and Effects Analysis is then applied to this assembly system to show which key elements influence the overall product quality. Methods to monitor these elements are presented. A unique aspect of this approach is exploring additional routines which can be incorporated in the process to identify machine specific problems. As explained within the paper, the Failure Mode and Effects Analysis shows that the resulting quality in a case study from a precision assembly task is dependent on the precision of the rotational axis. Although the rotational axis plays a significant role in the resulting error, it is hard to explicitly find a correlation between its degradation and produced parts. To overcome this, an additional routine is added to the production process, which directly collects information about the rotational axis. In addition to the overall concept, this routine is discussed and its ability to monitor the rotational axis is confirmed in the paper.

As the market imposes constantly increasing levels of reliability and availability of production equipment, it is necessary to shift the focus of maintenance toward predictive strategies. However, as any other investment, implementation of the required condition monitoring systems has to be cost justified. This paper presents a case study showing use of LCC calculations to assess changes of maintenance strategy for a CNC machining centre. It was proven that replacing reactive maintenance tasks with simple condition monitoring and preventive activities results in lower whole life cycle cost of the analysed machining centre.

Opis:
Manufacturing industries strive to produce improved component accuracy while not reducing machine tool availability or production throughput. The accuracy of CNC production machines is one of the critical factors in determining the quality of these components. Maintaining the capability of the machine to produce in-tolerance parts can be approached in one of two ways: run to failure or periodic calibration and monitoring. The problem is analogous to general machine tool maintenance, but with the clear distinction that the failure mode of general machine tool components results in a loss of production, whereas that of accuracy allows parts to be produced, which are only later detected as non-conforming as part of the quality control processes. This distinction creates problems of cost-justification, since at this point in the manufacturing chain, any responsibility of the machine is not directly evident. Studies in the field of maintenance have resulted in cost calculations for the downtime associated with machine failure. This paper addresses the analogous, unanswered problem of maintaining the accuracy of CNC machine tools. A mathematical cost function is derived that can form the basis of a strategy for either running until non-conforming parts are detected or scheduling predictive CNC machine tool calibrations. This is sufficiently generic that it can consider that this decision will be based upon different scales of production, different values of components etc. Therefore, the model is broken down to a level where these variables for the different inputs can be tailored to the individual manufacturer.

Smart manufacturing and predictive maintenance are current trends in the manufacturing industry. However, the holistic understanding of the machine tool health condition in terms of accuracy, functions, process and availability is still unclear. This uncertainty renders the development of models and the data acquisition related to machine tool health condition ineffective. This paper proposes the term machine tool ability as an interconnection between the accuracy, functions, the process and the availability to overcome the lack of the holistic understanding of the machine tool. This will facilitate the further development of qualitative or quantitative methods as well as models. The research highlights the challenges and gaps to understand the machine tool ability.

Opis:
As a typical type of controller in the area of machine tools the classical cascade controller is used. It consists of several PI control loops and allows the position control of the machine tool. This type of controller is easy to be implemented and gives satisfactory results but only in the case that the sufficiently stiff machine tool is being controlled. If adverse is true the performance of the controller deteriorates. This is due to the fact, that the controller is limited by the structural properties of the machine tool. The bandwidth of the controller is restricted by the position of the first anti-resonant frequency of the machine tool. The control techniques overcoming this limitation have been extensively researched. As a result the control technique employing the additional measurement of TCP, the model-based predictive control and the Kalman filter is used and delivers the increased control system dynamics. The paper deals with the description of the proposed control concept and the practical methods for additional measurement together with the Kalman filter tuning are described. The evaluation of the proposed control concept is based on the experimentally measured data on the machine tool axis with significant flexibility.

Opis:
Modern production strategies increase the demand for closer monitoring of the machine's condition. Especially wear affects its condition. This paper deals with the methodology of condition monitoring that can be based on different sources of data such as controller NC CNC and additional sensors. Two main methods for assessment are signal analysis based exclusively on measurement data and a model based method The latter is based on comparing the simulation of the objects behaviour with the acquired data. Ball screw drives are key elements of machine tools. They considerably contribute to the machine's performance. The paper compares two signal-based wear inducing characteristics and discusses the results. Afterwards a model-based approach is discussed.

During execution of a schedule some uncertain events may take place for example: resources may become unavailable, machine can be broken. Uncertainty should be included in the process of job scheduling. In the paper the problem to generate a workable, proactive baseline schedule under production constraints and unexpected event occurrence conditions is considered. The proactive baseline schedule protects against anticipated occurrences that may appear during the schedule execution. The machine breaking time is searched and the information is used to generate a robust schedule. In the paper the method of data acquisition basing on probability theory is proposed. The time of machine breaking is acquired from historical data of frequency of machine failure. A numerical example of building a hypothesis H:{the cumulative distribution function of the failure time is a normal distribution}, verification of the hypothesis, and predictive scheduling is presented. The normal distribution is proposed to describe failure time of machine as it gives consideration to a gradual wear process of the machine. The paper is proposition of improving simulation systems such as the Enterprise Dynamics or Taylor and scheduling systems such as Knowledge based Rescheduling System and Multi Objective Immune Scheduling Algorithm.

Opis:
Industrie 4.0 has been becoming one of the most challenging topic areas in industrial production engineering within the last decade. The increasing and comprehensive digitization of industrial production processes allows the introduction of innovative data-driven business models using cyber-physical systems (CPS) and Internet of Things (IoT). Efficient and flexible manufacturing of goods assumes that all involved production systems are capable of fulfilling all necessary machining operations in the desired quality. To ensure this, production systems must be able to communicate and interact with machines and humans in a distributed environment, to monitor the wear condition of functionally relevant components, and to self-adapt their behaviour to a given situation. This article gives an overview about the historical development of intelligent production systems in the context of value-adding business models. The focus is on condition monitoring and predictive maintenance in an availability oriented business model. Technical as well as organizational prerequisites for an implementation in the production industry are critically analysed and discussed on the basis of best practice examples. The paper concludes with a summary and an outlook on future research topics that should be addressed.
