Opis:
Machine tools are expected to be highly available. Unintended failure incurs high costs for repairs and through production losses. Maintenance is a major cost factor and is still mostly reactive today, as a result of failures. Maintenance plans by manufacturers that require preventive maintenance based on running hours are often not implemented consistently. It would be ideal to perform condition-dependent preventive maintenance of the most critical and cost-intensive assemblies of a machine tool. This would make it possible to move repair times into non-productive periods and to procure any spare parts at the right time. Eventually, this would lead to cost savings. This article describes the design of a condition monitoring system for machine tools and shows ways of monitoring the most critical machine tool assemblies.

Opis:
Parallel kinematics with a higher end-effector degree of freedom such as hexapods and pentapods consist of a large number of joints and slender struts. However, it is only possible to create comparably low levelsof bearing and strut bending stiffness atreasonable expense due to the limited construction space. That means that these structures are very susceptible to vibration. Even in the low-frequency range they have a large number of relevant eigenmodes that are only dampened slightly. Simultaneously, it is difficult to analyze vibrational properties due to coupled eigenmodes, which also makes it difficult to discover ways to remedy this situation. This article will take the example of a pentapod to analyze the dynamic properties of slightly dampened parallel kinematics by simulation to study potential means of manipulating it. This will include a description of the model formation of the mechanical system. The article will also address ways of reducing model size and using various simulation environments to boost analysis efficiency. Finally, both passive and active strategies will be studied and evaluated for boosting damping. Amongst others it could be shown that it is not necessary to damp every of the five kinematic chains to achieve effective improvement of the system damping behaviour.

This article summarizes experimental analyses for the determination of process parameters that can be achieved in an industrial machine tool with parallel kinematics. Focus is on the examination of the machining results' dependency on position and direction. Therefore milling experiments are conducted, testing different positions and directions within the workspace. Surface quality, process forces, acceleration as well as vibration characteristics of the working platform are assessed. Based on measured frequency responses the stability limits are determined at different locations within the workspace. By these examinations it can be confirmed that the dependency of static and dynamic machine properties on position and direction has an influence on machining results. Best results are achieved in central positions of the machine used for most of respective operations. Furthermore it's represented that the machining results are comparable to conventional serial machines though parallel kinematics show a stronger dependency on direction.

The widespread use of robots in industry contributes significantly to high productivity. Serial 6-axis robots are used in large quantities, e.g. for assembly or welding. A current emerging trend is the use of robots for classic tasks of a machine tool like finishing of milled workpieces. For such applications, standard robots are usually extended by additional axes like linear axes or rotary tilting tables. Therefore, the overall system becomes kinematically redundant. To be able to calculate the axis quantities via inverse kinematics for a given path, additional degrees of freedom must be bound. In order to automatically and optimally consider the additional axis motion a method, using the pseudoinverse of the Jacobian matrix, is discussed. Due to the dependence of the Jacobi matrix on the robot's current joint position, numerical inaccuracies, which in turn reflect a path error, are inherent to this method. By feedback control of the path error, in the form of a classic control loop, the error can be reduced so that a practical implementation on industrial robot controller is possible. In the article possibilities for parameterisation of the algorithm as well as proof of stability of the closed loop are presented. The results obtained are verified by a concrete application.

The quality of the controller parameterization of a drive system has direct influence on the obtained performance. Nevertheless, the commissioning is mainly done today by the application of basic tuning rules or not comprehensible automatisms. This often leads to not optimal performance. An alternative approach is to parameterize the typical controller cascade, which is widely used in standard industrial controllers, in one step by using the so-called “simulation-based optimization” (SBO). Significant advantages are the opportunity of defining specific restrictions concerning the desired controller parameterization and the possibility for directly processing non-linear systems without approximations. Furthermore, friction, additional filters in the cascade or controller structure extensions like the Advanced Position Control (APC) can be considered. Therefore, in the present paper, the application and the results of the SBO for different drive systems will be presented. After an introduction, the paper describes the basic principles of the simulation based optimization including the application for controller parameterization. Subsequently, the results for indirect velocity control of a test rig are discussed. After that, the findings for the commissioning of a direct position controller of an industrial servo press are presented. The paper closes with a summary and an outlook.

The position controller cascade is widely used in standard industrial controllers. Its controller parameterisation is commonly performed by either applying basic tuning rules or by carrying out not comprehensible design automatisms.In this paper an alternative approach to parameterise the cascade in one step is presented. It bases on established methods within the field of optimisation research specifically the so-called simulation-based optimisation (SBO), which can also handle non-linear models and various constrains. Own research showed, that criteria in the time domain as well as in the frequency domain are suitable optimisation criteria. However, both types have individual advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, in this research, selected representatives from both types were combined as new multi-objective optimisation criteria and investigated according to their performance. Investigations were performed for a test rig model (third order transfer function plus dead time and friction).The paper presents fundamentals of the SBO and a description of the optimisation criteria, obtained results as well as their verification on the test rig. Also, the derived controller parameterisations are compared to the integrated tuning automatism.

The life cycle costs of machine tools are much higher determined by their energy costs than what is often roughly assessed. The growing demand for consumer goods and especially possibilities of individual mobility in major parts of the developing world - e. g. Asia - will lead to serious problems in meeting the demand for an abundant energy supply and will increase the cost for energy further in the near-term future. Harder efforts are necessary to "reach more with less" - using less energy than today to reach a defined goal in production. The paper deals with a methodology to design machine tools with a high "energy efficiency". Based on the property-driven design methodology by Weber a systematic approach is shown to enhance the design of machine tools. Energy efficiency is a new additional and central property in the design process. To attain these given properties characterisations are determined by the engineer to fulfil these properties. On the developing-path the characterisations are defined in more detail step by step, and after each step it is assured if the accounted properties where met by the defined characteristics. The approach is to first analyse existing machine tools and therefore define prior energy consumers. The identified major consumers are afterwards systematically addressed to reduce their energy consumption. The result is an enhanced machine tool with state-of-the-art energy usage. This addresses the objectives of the EU and takes pressure of the energy supply by reducing the energy demand in production.

A number of efficient solutions are already in existence today for reducing specific energy and raw material needs, and they are continuously being improved. Since the competition between individual solutions for sustained energy efficiency may prove to be an obstacle to the system as a whole, the interaction of individual elements and sub-systems in complex domains must be considered in an integrated way with an eye to their reciprocal energy effects. What will be the impact of energy savings resulting from innovative approaches and intelligent solutions at a single systemic level on the system as a whole? Do they serve to reduce overall energy costs? What kinds of energy-related information are necessary to answer these questions? This article examines the issue of how dedicated energy savings in the production sector impact on the total energy requirement in factory systems. In one example, process and building are examined together in order to thereby recognize energy relationships. It was demonstrate that waste heat from machine tools has a significant impact on the factory hall climate and therefore on the heating needs of factory buildings. A model calculation demonstrated that energy savings at individual system levels are transferable to the entire system in direct proportion to the energy efficiency of the building.
