Opis:
The article interprets selected works of two Belarusian writers, Sokrat Janowicz and Mira Łuksza and concentrates on the concept of ethnic focalization. Drawing on the idea of urban “mapping”, formulated by Katarzyna Szalewska, the author proposes one more strategy, namely ethinicization. This method seems indispensable in the topo-analysis of bi-ethnic regions, which evoke “hybrid constellations” between the author and the reader.

Rwanda today faces various challenges of civilization, first of all, however, it has ti copy with the legacy of the ehnic genocide. Not surprisingly, that one of the fundamental tasks that the country and its government set itself after 1994 became the problem of the legal judgement of persons responsible for genocide and of the establishing of national unity, which would prevent Rwanda from the next conflict. Therefore, apart from judging on a massive scale all those guilty of crimes, the government has taken parallel action for the idea of commemorating the victims and began the process of building national unity. Today, Rwanda is a place for education which aims at the creation of a one national community and the state, in other words „education for the community”.

Purpose – An assessment of the level of social capital in the context of ethnic diversity using the example of the Podlaskie voivodeship. Furthermore, showing the relationship between social capital and local and regional development.Research method – Quantitative and comparative analyses of selected indicators of the surveyed terri-torial units (powiats of the Podlaskie Voivodeship) while maintaining the criterion of ethnic diversity. Data from the Central Statistical Office (Local Data Bank) and the National Electoral Commission for the period 2010-2018 were used. Results – The level of social capital is higher in multi-ethnic powiats, in particular as far as the civic dimension is concerned, which is measured by the use of passive and active voting rights. Similarly, the number of foundations, associations and social organizations per 1,000 inhabitants is higher in multi-ethnic powiats. As far as the level of entrepreneurship is concerned, the majority of powiats of diversi-fied nationalities is insignificant, while single-nation powiats have higher rates in relation to member-ship in sports clubs.Originality / value / implications / recommendations – A thesis which is popular in the subject literature that ethnically diverse areas are characterized by lower social capital is not true in the case of the Podlaskie voivodeship, in which ethnic groups have been present for centuries. Consequently, it may be assumed that ethnic diversity has a negative impact on the level of social capital only temporarily.

Opis:
The dispute over whether there exists a Silesian nation, Silesian nationality or whether Silesians are an ethnic group, has flared up in Poland, but mainly in the Silesian Voivodeship, on a surprisingly large scale. This rather fresh controversy, growing since the turn of the 80s and 90s of the last century, i.e. since the beginning of the transformation processes in Poland, takes place in public discussions and in the media, and its finale – in the courts. Some believe that the basis is the Silesians’ disappointment with the way the region has been transformed, through a destructive rather than creative restructuring, through closure of coal mines and steel mills, all of which has resulted in citizens’ impoverishment, in sudden outbreak of unemployment, and in the lack of any program or strategy for the region. The 1990s saw the appearance of an idea of recognizing the Silesian national distinctiveness, founded on a wave of renaissance of Silesian cultural identity. Loud became demands of reviving the idea of autonomy of the Silesian province, and the fight for recognition of Silesian nationality as a different social and political entity. The Silesians, convinced of the marginalization of indigenous people as well as of injustices and wrongs inflicted by the Polish authorities after World War II, in various ways, including the political and judicial ones, are attempting to gain the status of a national minority or, as in recent times, an ethnic one. It is hard not to agree with the thesis that these efforts fit in with the idea of multiculturalism, which – being an indicator of the level of democratization of all spheres of life – has accelerated the revival of regional identity in a large part of the population of Silesia and provided them with the ideological basis to articulate their needs, expectations and aspirations.

The purpose of this article is to introduce the image of the Republic of Belarus and Belarusians in the context of the “Theory of the Turn” of Arjun Appadurai. It analyzes the ethnoscapes, mediascapes, technoscapes, finanscapes and ideascapes constituting the contemporary picture of the Republic of Belarus and Belarusians. In the modern, globalized world both imaginations and symbols served an important role in inter-ethnic relations. Contemporary images of the Republic of Belarus and Belarusian culture are constructed based on the actions of globalized mass media. The Polish media are dominated by the political image of Belarus. Belarusian society is being shown as passive in relation to Lukashenko’s dictatorship. Polish public media are not interested in the Belarusians’ culture, science or art. Contrary to widespread flow of information on the globalized world, the image of the Republic of Belarus and Belarusians is characterized by vagueness and insufficient information.

There is a stereotype that the Republic of Belarus is a country where pluralism does not exist in all spheres of life. However, this statement is not precisely correct, as contemporary Belarus demonstrates political neutrality and pluralism in the foreign policy and multiculturalism inside the country. Multiculturalism is viewed in the paper as mutual tolerance among the population and respect to the Otherness in cultural life. Two major spheres of pluralistic phenomenon are discussed: ethnic composition of Belarus and its religious confessions. Although a major part of the believers belongs to two Christian confessions, Orthodox and Catholic, many other confessions and new religious movements also exist. Religious pluralism is a practical reality in Belarus which has the reputation of the most religiously tolerant post-Soviet country. Contemporary laws provide the legal basis for tolerant relations in the country, and there is a historical tradition of religious tolerance in Belarus.

Opis:
Te article aims at inquiring whether using the category of 'multiculturality' in the analysis of the contemporary Polish society is at all meaningful. Building on the material from ethnographic feldwork carried in an ethnically and religiously diverse community, it argues that the study of diversity in Poland needs to take into consideration one basic fact: namely to recognize that diversity in Poland has been developing in the context of one dominant culture and that this context strongly infuences the relations between the majority and the minorities. In so doing, the article demonstrates that not only does the category of 'multiculturalism' is misused in the Polish scholarly discourse, but that it obscures the problem of domination and, rather than promoting diversity, it consolidates a view of a monocultural society.

These legal circumstances justify considering the significance of Kashubian language for the members of ethnic community and its relations to other key values of the group. The rebirth of the Polish state after a long period of partition constituted a great op-portunity as well as a new challenge for professionals in the Bar association. The Barassociation attained self-governing status. This, on the one hand, enabled the group tocreate an environment and to strengthen the social significance of this group in Poland. On the other hand, it created dangers caused by the different traditions which werecultivated in different parts of the formerly partitioned Poland. Another factor contri-buting to the problem was the multinational composition of the Bar. The Bar duringthe interwar years was highly divided ethnically. The Jewish and Ukrainian minoritieshad an especially strong representation. The Bar organizations protected their nationalautonomy. The conflict between the numerous associations, which were formally openfor minorities and practically organized according to national interests, was severe. Thisconflict was especially visible in Lesser Poland. The pressure of professional competiti-on cast a shadow over the Bar’s ethos. Antagonisms based on nationality were presentin the researched period with a varying degree of intensity and appeared in differentforms. The situation was finally alleviated by the act from 1938. The looming threat ofthe impending war also contributed to their appeasement.

The paper comprises a theoretical exploration focused upon the ethnic borderland and the potential factors of its decomposition present and active in contemporary world. Namely, attention and discussion had been focused upon peculiarity of ethnic borderland build and maintained by social and neighbourhood relationships between members of numerous local ethnic groups, and its distinction from areas located near the border-line, on the one, and from the social boundaries on the other hand. The argument of this paper is that contemporary further existence of ethnic borderland has been threatened by a number of factors, among them the uniformity caused by cultural globalisation, that is by globally transmitted products of popular culture, by mass emigration from the borderland, by multiculturalism, and by gradual deconstruction of the nation-state.

In the article the author analyzes the complex configurations that occurred in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe between the languages of communication there and the languages of particular ethnic groups. It further tries to answer the question of how to define communities defined as national but distinguishable by the use of another language that does not fall within the cultural code of the language of a given nation. The author analyzes the specific political game that takes place around linguistic minorities, which are generally not defined as ethnic minorities, mainly on the example of “Russian-linguistic Ukrainians” in Ukraine. The comparison of the characteristics of selected national minorities inhabiting the eastern part of the Podlaskie Voivodship in Poland is also presented. The article ends with the generalization that the basic direction of action is the legal, political and socio-cultural recognition of cultural diversity as an integral part of the structural character of each society.
