Opis:
The paper discusses the attitude of the Fascist regime in Italy towards the dialects, which in that period were still used in everyday communication by most Italians. It analyses the language politics in the field of education and mass media. A lot of attention has been paid to the teaching program “from dialect to language”, which was experimented with at schools in the twenties and subsequently abandoned as a result of a growing anti-dialect campaign. It also discusses the restrictions in the use of dialects in the press, radio and cinema. The emerging picture of the language policy of that period shows a transition from relative tolerance towards the use of dialects in public area in the twenties to a rising hostility and the fight against them conducted for the sake of ideological and political unification of Italy.

Opis:
The history of the Gypsies concentrate on the research of their language because the language itself gives proof of their Indian origin. Scientists compared romani dialects with Sanscrit and New Indo-Aryan languages, which let them acknowledge that the Gypsies probably come from India. They left India in 10th century for unknown reasons. The romani language has been an oral language despite many trials to codify it. It has gone through a basic evolutionary way of being formed spontaneously by people. Nowadays, a lack of langauge standards and loanwords cause a problem for the Gypsies all over the world to communicate. However, whole Gypsy`s culture, including a language, is a mosaic of different cultures met on their century-old journey. The romani language illustrates routes of Gypsies migration and outer influences. Comminucation in the romani let the Gypsy save their tradition, sustain group identity and strengthen inner solidarity. The language is for them a certain code, known and used almost exclusively by the Gypsies. Although it is not single and common for all their speakers, it plays a linking role.

Opis:
The subject of considerations presented in this article is phraseological units appearing in Dominik Kuziniewicz’s tales. The research material was selected from two of his books: Kochaninkie, patrzajciesami (1989) and Żeby gembulka była uśmiechnięta (2007).The overwhelming majority of the phraseological relationships used by the storyteller is colloquial, which was dictated by the topics discussed in the texts that relate to various situations occuring in everyday life. The research shows that only a small group of phraseologies was used in the canonical form, while the absolute majority of phraseological units appear in a modified form. Their various transformations were largely favored by the stylization of the Polish dialects used in Lithuania. As a result of such an operation, in many phraseologisms (with original lexics), Polish grammatical forms were replaced by forms characteristic to these language varieties. Much more often, the author changes the lexical composition of phraseologisms, using various procedures, such as replacing the lexical component of phraseology, supplementing phraseology with new components and using phraseological calque of East Slavic languages.

“Swoja mowa” differs from literary Belarusian language in phonetics and from Ukrainian language in vocabulary, which is similar to Belarusian. “Swoja mowa” gained the status of Podlachian literary micro language. Intellectual accomplishments of its creators cannot obscure the fact that the language did not gain many followers. In my opinion the reason for this situation is the lack of a particular social concept of the future, not of the past. The same can be applied to Belarusian language, although its speakers can at least theoretically rely on the new Belarusianisation policy in Belarus. On the other hand, “the plain language” has found a niche – praise of the countryside and rebellion against the polish-speaking high culture.

The article aims to determine the status and origin of the verb pluszczyć in three Slavic languages. The analysis of linguistic data has shown that, in terms of diachronic perspective, the unit under scrutiny is a semantic innovation that is common to Belarusian, Ukrainian and Polish (the Mazovian dialect), but has a slightly different character in each of these languages. While in Belarusian pluszczyć belongs to the lexical inventory of literary language, in Ukrainian it appears rather occassionally, but in Polish it is a regionalism (Podlasie) that can be synchronically considered as a loanword adopted from Belarusian.

The article attempts to determine how to classify the verb szczupać ‘to touch, to feel’ that is present in Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian languages and also in the Polish-East Slavic borderland region. As has been revealed by the analysis of documents, linguistic data gathered from historical dictionaries and dictionaries of dialects along with literary sources, the verb in question is an East Slavic borrowing that has been adopted locally in a major part of Poland’s eastern borderland and reinforced by the existence of derivatives.

The article discusses characteristic features of the words kozytać ‘to tickle’, and kozytki ‘tickling’, that have a limited, regional distribution in Slavic languages and are present in Belarusian, Russian and Polish. A thorough analysis of dialectal data was conducted in an attempt to identify the origin and geographical markedness of these items. It has been revealed that *kozitati was most frequently used in North Belarus and was most probably a historic Belarusian-Polish innovation.

Opis:
The aim of the article was to present the lexical richness and word-formation potential of the lexeme matka [mother] in the dialects of Ostróda, Warmia and Mazury. The lexemes mother, mama and muter, as well as their derivatives were analyzed. The linguistic material was based on the file of Słownik gwar Ostródzkiego, Warmii i Mazur [A Dictionary of Dialects of Ostróda, Warmia and Masuria Regions] that is a record of dialect status at the end of the 1950s. The lexeme matka is connected with the creation of 10 derivatives, the lexeme mama – with 7 derivatives, and muter – 2 derivatives. The derivation of the last word is a proof of the adaptation of a German root in the dialects under discussion. The analysis of the material has shown that the derivatives have a modify ing semantic function and they convey positive emotions towards the referent. In this way, hypocoristic formations were created whose suffixes do not differ significantly from the general Polish word-formation system. In addition, it turned out that about 80% of the derivatives come from the dialect literary style, as the second degree suffixes are not functional in the analyzed dialects. In communicating positive feelings towards the designate, simple suffixes were sufficient for the language users. It is not possible to determine isomorphs on the basis of the material collected in the file, as questions about diminutives were attached to the questionnaire at the last stage of the fieldwork.

The article presents a manuscript collection of dialect lexicon from the 2nd half of the 19th century compiled by Artur Doliński. The glossary records the vocabulary characteristic of the folk dialect of the Vilnius area. The author has established that in terms of methodology, Doliński’s work differs from other studies of this type (the entries are not arranged alphabetically, they lack qualifiers or explicataions of how to use a particular word). However, this does not diminish the value of the work under discussion, since the glossary records unknown lexemes from historical Lithuania, and attests to phonetic and grammatical features inherent in the borderland variety of the language. This makes Doliński’s work an important source for the study of Polish dialects in the 19th century Northeastern Borderlands.

Pejorative deverbal names of subjects with a suffixal formant denoting a person with regard to making movement, motion in space are discussed in the article. The names are used in the peripheral Belarusian dialects of Lewkowo Stare. They refer mainly to men who perform an action. They can also be ambivalent with regard to grammatical gender. In the study about 170 derivatives formed by means of 30 suffixal formants have been analyzed. The analysis of the collected material has enabled to distinguish not only appropriate word-formation types within the studied category of names but also many and highly extended synonymic sequences of the analyzed derivational structures.

Opis:
This article concerns the manuscript Roślin potrzebnych by Krzysztof Kluk, an enlightenment priest and scientist from Podlasie, an author of botanic and zoological guidebooks. The manuscript of his first botanic handbook was recently found in Baworoscy’s Library in Lviv. Nevertheless, considering lack of direct authorship mark, an analysis focused on graphic and phonetic linguistic features has to be performed to confirm the authorship. Studies have shown some linguistic features, which have as much in common with 18th century Eastern Borderland Polish Language (especially the northeastern). Other linguistic features have much in common with the dialects of Mazowsze and Podlasie. It is very likely that the manuscript has been written by someone who lived on the borderland of Mazowsze and Podlasie. According to Kluk’s biography it is almost certain this person was Krzysztof Kluk. Therefore, the manuscript discovered in Baworowscy’s Library is Krzysztof Kluk’s autograph with all probability.
