In recent times several features have emerged as regards the contemporary sculptures of Benin. These features have either overtly or covertly created the differences between the ancient and contemporary bronze sculptures of Benin. These unfortunate features includes (1) careless finishing, (2) contemporary bronze are heavier, (3) themes are repeated, (4) lack deep storylines, (5) most times, bronze antiques are forged, and (6) most lack sensitive commanding forms. Indeed, these are the traits which made ancient Benin bronze sculptures resonate, reverberate and resound both in ancient and contemporary time. What therefore should be done to move the contemporary Benin bronze sculptures to a higher artistic level is what this paper seeks to appraise and critically establish.

The author of the article discusses an individual strategy of presenting the image of Dmitry Zhilunovich in the 20th century Belarusian literature (based on a documentary novel “Without an epitaph”). The picture is created by a system of artistic devices which depend on the features of the selected genres. Quotations of archival material, historians’ opinions, friends’ and relatives’ comments and memories built an elementary layer of the text of a documentary.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to characterise epithet and its functions in Wybawienie Ruggiera z wyspy Alcyny by S.S. Jagodyński. Performed analysis has demonstrated that epithet, in the work covered by the study, is a form of expression of instrumental nature, although also one that serves a stylistic function. It is characterised by semantics that lack originality, rarely evoke metaphor, nevertheless, undoubtedly, it completes both the world presented on the plot level as well as the depiction of characters. It also often serves an important role as a component that improves cohesion of the text. This instrumentality and, at the same time, efficiency of an epithet may be attributed to the generic dimension of the work, i.e. opera libretto, and that is usually governed by plot and its dynamics, which is very important in an opera, as a peculiar synthesis of the arts.

The analysis of the concepts “ours” and “alien” takes place within the framework of the study of the actual imagology. Contemporary British English poetry expresses the ideas through the following concepts: the struggle of the Irish for their independence, the need for empathy and assistance to emigrants, the need to respect and study not only English but also foreign poets, the idea of the presence of highly artistic poetry as a criterion for assessing the spiritual and cultural level of the country as a whole, the idea of the need to travel around the world to learn about their national identity and for spiritual and cultural enrichment, the idea of mixing languages, cultures, religions during the immigration of eastern nations to multicultural Great Britain, the idea of the beauty of the native language and others.

Wartykule analizowana jest „mała” proza jako forma odzwierciedlająca samoidentyfikację osoby w utworach M. Hareckiego i L. Andriejewa. Specyfika samoidentyfikacji warunkowana jest poprzez szeroką reprezentację samoidentyfikacyjnych typów, sformowanymi charakterami i różnorodnością gatunków literackich „małej” prozy autorów. Głównymi cechami utworów M. Hareckiego są ich dokumentalność, obecność narratora identyfikującego się z autorem, koncentrującego się na narodowo-kulturalnej i społecznej identyfikacji; zaś dla „małej” prozy L. Andriejewa charakterystyczny jest alegoryczny, ekspresyjny oraz moralno-filozoficzny wydźwięk jego utworów dotyczących problemu samoidentyfikacji.
The article deals with short stories as the form of representation of selfidentification in M. Haretsky’s and L. Andreyev’s works. The specificity of selfidentification of characters is conditioned by multitude of identity types, formed characters, and genre diversity of the authors’ short stories.Main features of M. Haretsky’s oeuvre are its documentary orientation, presence of the narrator, whose self-identification is close to the author’s one, concentration on national and social identity. Allegorical and expressive narration, moral and philosophical components of identity are characteristic features of L. Andreyev’s prose.

The article analyzes the emotional aspect of autobiographical places in the works of Bohumil Hrabal. Its author observes that both the short and the long prosaic forms by the Czech writer are often set in the space stretching between ateliers of pubs and en plein-airs of Nymburk on the Elbe River (“the town on water”), forests of Kersko, and the degraded smelter plant Krásná Poldi in Kladno. The list of Hrabal’s locations does not end here and also includes the “borderland areas”, such as the control room and platforms of the railway station in Kostomlaty nad Labem; the basement of the wastepaper warehouse in Spalona Street in Prague (and pubs nearby); the author’s flat (which had neither windows nor a toilet) located at 24 Na Hrázi (Věčnosti) Street and many other streets leading directly to the Svět pub Special attention is also given to a place that the author had never visited – Drohobych, but got to know through the prose of Bruno Schulz.

Cel – Celem rozważań jest analiza sytuacji finansowo-ekonomicznej artystów i twórców w Polsce ze zwróceniem szczególnej uwagi na formy zatrudnienia oraz zaplecze socjalne. Metoda badań – Artykuł ma charakter przeglądu różnych źródeł historycznych przedstawiających sytuację i uwarunkowania finansowania twórców i artystów w Polsce od 2010 r. W artykule zastosowano analizę krytyczną literatury przedmiotu z zakresu rynku pracy artystów i twórców oraz ich finansowania. Wnioski – Sektor kultury, a tym samym artyści i twórcy będący na rynku pracy w Polsce stanowią nie tylko ważną grupę społeczną, ale także ważny element gospodarki. Finansowanie twórców i artystów w Polsce wydaje się, że nie jest wystarczające, zważywszy na ich wkład w gospodarkę kraju.
Purpose – The aim of the considerations is to analyze the financial and economic situation of artists and creators in Poland, paying particular attention to the forms of employment and welfare measuress. Research method – The article is a review of various historical sources presenting the situation and determinants of financing creators and artists in Poland since 2010. The article uses a critical analysis of the literature on the subject of the labor market of artists and creators and their financing. Results – The cultural sector, and thus artists and creators who are on the labor market in Poland, are not only an important social group, but also an important element of the economy. Funding creators and artists in Poland seems to be insufficient, considering their contribution to the country's economy.

In the article the works of Maxim Garetsky, a classic of Belarusian literature have been analyzed. The author directs his attention to multidimensionality, pluralism of artistic and aesthetic search, connection with existential-philosophical discourse, specificity of the writer’s approach to the essence of “existential” conflict, the problem of moral choice, responsibility for the evil. It is stated that the main line of the works is associated with the search for axiological priorities directly related to the problem of individual existence, to the option of “choice”, to the idea of preservation of human sovereignty and the protection of the right for a decent life.

Narrative strategies in the story “Weed” by S. Yanovich and in small prose by M. Straltsov are aimed at revealing the inner world of man. The heroes of the works of both writers are reflective people. The writers paid much attention to introspection.M. Straltsov preferred to modify the plot, the combination of lyricism and epic. S. Yanovich chose secondary artistic convention – satirical image.
Strategie narracyjne w powieści „Samosiej” S. Janowicza i opowiadaniach M. Stralcowa mają na celu badanie artystycznie świata człowieka. Bohaterowie utworów obu pisarzy są ludźmi refleksyjnymi. Pisarze przykładali dużą uwagę do introspekcji. M. Stralcow wolał zmieniać wątki fabularnie, kombinacje liryzmu i epiki podczas gdy S. Janowicz wybierał stosowanie drugorzędnej konwencji artystycznej, obrazu satyrycznego.

Мастацкае асэнсаванне творчага працэсу ў паэзii Уладзiмiра Дубоўкi 1920-х годоў было палемiчным у адносiнах да афiцыйных iдэалагiчных установак у вобласцi культуры. Поэт засяродзiў сваю ўвагу на такiх пытаннях, як основы творчасцi, лiтаратура i крытыка, паэт i мова, межы творчай свабоды. У. Дубоўка творча выкарыстоўваў для гэтага мастацкiя магчымасцi верша i паэмы, актыўна звяртаўся да iронii. Паэт лiчыў важнымi такiя функцыi лiтаратуры, як актуалiзацыя класiки, пазнанне свету i чалавека, выяўление духоўных магчымасцей асобы i соцыуму, развiццё мышлення чытачоў, пазiцыяванне эксперымента. Апрача таго, ён разумеў лiтаратурную творчасць як самавыяўленне i самахарактарыстыку поэта.
Artystyczna interpretacja literatury w poezji W. Dubouki w latach dwudziestych XX wieku miała charakter polemiczne w odniesieniu do oficjalnych warunków ideologicznych panujących w ówczesnej kulturze. Poeta koncentrował się na takich kwestiach, jak podstawy twórczości, literatura i krytyka, poeta i język, granice twórczej wolności. U. Dubouka twórczo wykorzystał artystyczne możliwości wiersza i poematu, aktywnie zwracał się ku ironii. Poeta analizował takie funkcje literatury, jak aktualizowanie klasyki, zdobywanie wiedzy o świecie i człowieku, pokazywanie duchowych możliwości jednostki i społeczeństwa, rozwijanie wrażliwości czytelników i pozycjonowanie eksperymentu. Rozumiał twórczość literacką jako samoidentyfikację i autocharakteryzację poety.
The artistic interpretation of literature in the poetry of U. Dubouka of the 1920s was polemical in reference to official ideological settings in the culture of that time. The poet’s attention was focused on such questions as the foundations of creativity, literature and criticism, poet and language, the boundaries of creative freedom. U. Dubouka creatively used the artistic possibilities of poetic verses and poems, he actively turned to irony. The poet considered such important functions of literature as updating the classics, acquiring the knowledge of the world and the man, revealing the spiritual possibilities of an individual and society, developing the thinking of readers, and experiment positioning. In addition, he understood literary creativity as self-identification and self-characterization of the poet.

In the poem “Son na kurganye” by Yanka Kupala the author uses symbolic form and content (dream, night dream) in order to present the existence of man from the perspective of his entitled fate and hostility of existential space. The author of the article directs his attention to the presence of poet’s social predictions for Belarusians. Symbolic form and content, conventionality of artistic form and its elements (mysticism, recurrence, analogy of events, etc.), semantic code, problems, combination of the past, present and future in the space of dream-code have been analyzed. In order to reinforce conclusions about the conceptual way of artistic presentation of reality in Y. В статье предпринята попытка анализа образа дома в творчестве автора “Дома с мезонином” в его фабульном, эстетическом и символическом аспектах, решаемых А.Чеховым целиком оригинально, так как писатель избегает прямой перекодировки реальных фактов в художественный материал. Такой прием приводит к тому, что каждое произведение Чехова приобретает значимость обобщения, близкого принципам онтологического познания.
One of the most essential motifs in Anton Chekhov’s literature is a house, its surroundings and dwellers. There are personal and artistic factors that determine these motifs. Personal aspects refer to the fact that the writer was compelled to change his place of residence several times in his short lifetime. Artistic aspects encompass Chekhov’s insightful employment of the architecture and its surroundings as an additional element in the modes of representation of his characters.
