The article discusses the functions of the map in the journalism and poetry of Michał Książek (Droga 816, Jakuck, Nauka o ptakach, Północny wschód). The author asserts that the map creates multiple tensions between the sign and reality and releases the emotions which accompany the journey, both in space and time. Książek constantly seeks correspondence between the world of the map and reality, which he merges in his travel narratives and observations.

The article discusses the monograph Mapy romantyków by Dorota Siwicka in the light of her earlier works about the connections between Romantic poetry and place, and Romantic culture and geography. This critical reading includes the contemporary, especially literary, interest in spatial studies. The article reviews Siwicka’s interdisciplinary work, characterizes her selection of maps and dissertations, and concentrates, among other categories, on the concept of “cartographic pact”, which is an instrument for mapping Romantic authors.

The article discusses the impact of place on the traveller’s eye. The author uses Hippolyte Taine’s Venetian episode in Voyage en Italie [Journey to Italy] to illustrate how Venice’s landscape transforms and rejuvenates Taine’s eye, modeling his emotions. It turns out that the traveller sees affectively. This way of seeing is no different from the aesthetic eye which, according to Taine’s theory, “uncovers” what is “conspicuous”. The Italian sketches demonstrate as a result that his “philosophy of art” is permeated by geopoetic thinking about the place agency.

The article discusses the relationships with places formed by two writers: Adam Mickiewicz and a forgotten Philomath from the region of Podlasie–MichałRukiewicz.Theauthorusesthemethodologiesdeveloped within geopoetics and humanist geography to discover how the biography is related to a specific physical place and to demonstrate how the two writers shaped their geobiographies. Rukiewicz left his mark on the places with activism within local communities; Mickiewicz textualized them in artistic gesture. The Philomath from Podlasie was happy to give himself to his nation but the Lithuanian poet spoke more through emotion and faith.

This paper demonstrates how space and spatial relations where conceptualized in the Polish poetics of the early nineteenth century. The author concentrates mainly on different uses of the term “place” in theoretical treaties of the period. Comparing how this term is used in reference to drama and to other genres which represent the epoch leads to the following conclusion. Namely, in literary criticism of the times the concept of literature understood as the practice of “painting with words” was in fact a substitute for the concept of literature as spatiotemporal structure.

The article provides a commentary of the monograph Rabka w literaturze, literaci w Rabce (Rabka 2018) edited on Zofia Budrewicz and Jan Ceklarz mainly in the context of anthropology of place and local microhistory. The author seeks to organize the geopoetic studies concerning Rabka, including affects, locality and material dimension of the place. She also points to the duality of the resort town of Rabka-Zdrój, seeing it as the space for intercultural encounters. Finally, she proposes Rabka’s cultural map and the Polish literary map of resort subculture.

The articles analyzes the poetics in Sylwia Chutnik’s Cwaniary. It is the audacious parody of urban courtyard ballad about four Warsaw feminist scallywags (Polish: 'cwaniary') who fist-fight to take control in the city. The author of the article demonstrates thatWarsaw is not merely the novel’s background scenery but also its main character. By analyzing the poetics of the city in the context of Chutnik’s metatextual remarks and her city guide Warszawa Kobiet (Women’s Warsaw) the author concentrates on the function of description to evoke the Warsaw genius loci. It is in the descriptive parts of the book that the writer particularly demonstrates her fascination with the city, which she herself calls ‘sickness’. This picture of Warsaw results from Chutnik’s social activism and from the attempts to ‘tame’ the place whose traumatic past leaves traces in her literary works.

The article analyzes the manuscript recovered in Lithuania which is a personal accountof Józef Weyssenhoff’s trip throughLivoniaat theend of the nineteenth century. Józef Weyssenhoff (1860–1932), the famous novelist and renowned “bard” of the landed gentry tradition, never recanted his Polish-Livonian roots. Thanks to his collector’s efforts we can now enjoy the invaluable documents on the history of the Weyssenhoff family. As his biography suggests Weyssenhoff’s travelling back to his homeland was influenced by something more than his intrinsic curiosity and collector’s passion. The author of the article investigates the significance of geography and enquires whether by reading these notes we can evaluate the writer’s attachment to the autobiographical place and whether the old Polish Livonia is a place of ancestors. Finally, the author identifies the function of emotions and senses in this personal creation and traces these planes of reference in the poetics of the text.

The article presents the way of domesticating the space of the health resort and hospital in three works of Miron Białoszewski: The Heart Attack, Konstancin and The Letters to Eumenides. The illness – in 1974 first and then in theyear 1983, second heartattack – forces thewriterto stay consecutively in unfamiliar health resorts, and at the same time it opens a new stage in his life and work. Following the assumptions of geopoetics that the way of seeing space is associated with the activity and the perception of the entity, as well as taking into account the causative role of the places, I analyze the changes occurring in Białoszewski’s health resort texts. I further present the stages of constructing the “self” and demonstrate the importance of space of the health resort and hospital in each of the stages.

The article presents the fourteen folk etymologies of a toponym Radziłów (the name of a village in the present district of Kolno in Podlaskie province) and also nine names of other villages situated in a parish Radziłów: Brychy, Glinki, Janowo, Konopki, Kramarzewo, Łoje, Rydzewo, Pieniążek and Wiązownica. The author juxtaposes all the folk etymologies of these names and compares them structurally and semantically with their scientific etymologies.

In the fiction and documentary literature of the XX century, a significant place was taken by the image of the hotel, which was due, on the one hand, to history, and on the other – to the properties of this type of space. Wars, revolutions, migrations, as well as the natural tendency of man to travel and adventure made the hotel an important sociocultural phenomenon. This article discusses strategies for depicting temporary residences as a special recreational and entertainment space. The object of the study was the texts of different genres in the collection 33 Hotels, or Hello, Beautiful Life! Particular attention is paid to the organization of various points of view in the book, the nature of the interaction of heroes and hotel spaces, hotels and other spatial objects, as well as to the motives associated with the three functions of hotels – escapic, entertainment and wellness.

The article discusses two texts. One is A Brief Stop on a Road from Auschwitz, a post memorial, non-fictional prose by Göran Rosenberg, the other – My Name is not Miriam, a novel by Majgull Axelsson. The main characters of these stories are Holocaust survivors, who after the war reach Sweden with the help of the local Red Cross. The article attempts to discover the intricate intersections between the concepts of space, time, trauma, memory and identity, as experienced during their migration.

In Kraszewski’s times the term ”vagrant” becomes a stigmatizing label. It denotes the Poles who return to politically-oppressed Poland, only to suffer exclusion by their fellow countrymen, who see them as suspicious revolutionists. The writer demonstrates the intersection of Polish and foreign culture from his own position of loner and emigrant in Dresden while the country faces at the time the imminent prospect of territorial fragmentation. The article attempts to interpret the intricate mechanism of changes in Polish mentality and culture which Kraszewski identified as resulting from territorial partitioning of Poland.
