Opis:
The article analyses the image of a foreigner, a recurring protagonist in Start, which is a series of contemporary textbooks for teaching Polish as a foreign language for levels A0-A2. The analysis aims to reveal the extent to which his native cultural background, reflected in the social behaviour, habits, preferences and interests, expressed views and emotions, self-awareness of identity, values and reaction to the encounter with Polish culture, is taken into account in the way he is shown, and to what degree this character has been culturally “Polonized”. The authors conclude that the resource presents a rather ethnocentric point of view and, as such,  might undermine the teachers’ efforts to develop intercultural awareness among students.

Due to the growing number of students from Ukraine, the goals, effects and content of teaching in this field should be transformed to meet the specific linguistic needs of students from beyond the eastern border. The aim of the article is to present the teaching goals and priorities of students from Ukraine. The results of the study will be compared with the teaching rules of the contemporary methodology of teaching Polish as a foreign language to Eastern Slavs.

The changing status and conditions of teaching Polish language in the European context have led to a fundamental shift in the profile of Polish language learners, their needs, motivation and learning aims. What follows is the fact that the curricula creators, course organisers and the authors of teaching materials, course books and learning aids have faced new challenges, problems, and learner expectations. The following paper is an attempt to outline the profile of an adult learner studying Polish in Poland.

A language biography is most often a reflection on one’s own linguistic development and therefore can be termed “language autobiography”. In its a broad sense, a language biography may include mother tongue acquisition, yet this article focuses solely on foreign language learning, with a special emphasis on the German language. The article provides insights into factors that motivate learners of German and into changes in these factors over a period of time, including the role of intercultural motivators. A theoretical and methodological introduction is followed by the results of a qualitative study conducted in five Polish institutions of tertiary education on a group of 73 students learning German. The excerpts of biographies quoted provide a picture of motivation as a dynamic process and moreover indicate that as present-day students get older, they are increasingly more thoughtful about their learning.

Efficient teaching of speaking and writing in a foreign language is always a challenge. In particular, the development of productive skills requires the employment of a variety of methods designed to provide necessary encouragement. Teaching Polish in a country as distant from Poland as Japan seems to be even more demanding than might be the case with more popular languages, such as English, because students have very limited opportunities to use Polish in their daily lives. My solution involves the use of pictures, employed in the course of the class as cues stimulating students imagination and thus generating a context conducive to real communication.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to discuss the main Polish educational legislation aimed at promoting diversity and individualization in the the process of schooling. The focus is on dealing with heterogeneity, which has become frequent in Polish schools and kindergartens. This includes various aspects concerning differentiation in children and young people, such as individual developmentental characteristics, gender, socio-cultural environment, special educational needs or giftedness. Heterogeneity requires individualization of the educational process, which also applies to the teaching of foreign languages. This poses a challenge for many teachers, including foreign language teachers. In many respects Polish legislation regulates how to deal with heterogeneity and individualization in the educational context.

Languages for specific purposes (LSP) are taught in two different contexts – for academic and for professional needs. In the first case, they are primarily tools for acquiring and processing knowledge, which is possible by knowing a number of terms. That is why B2 is indicated as the optimal level for starting their acquisition. LSP for professional purposes are primarily intended for effective communication and can be taught independently from general language proficiency. In this paper, the authors describe the findings of a survey in which Chinese students of Polish language and culture were asked to express their opinions on the publication Truchcikiem z Kopernikiem. The analysis aims to show if this book is a suitable tool for training LSP in an academic context. It covers levels from A to C (CEFR) and offers training of language in higher education for academic purposes as well as practical language training in situations typical for everyday life at the university. The respondents, representing A2-B1+ proficiency levels, found the book useful for language learning (70%) and for studying in Poland (92%). At the same time, however, 45% of them considered that the exercises were too difficult (for 50% they were adequate), which was explained by the high complexity of vocabulary. They also expressed their expectations for a higher number of grammar tasks in the book.

Opis:
The professional development of teachers is associated with increased specialized competence and professional advancement, which usually correlate with a specific level of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The vagaries of Polish education and its contemporary image are not always conducive to such development and generate situations, or circumstances, which demotivate some teachers, despite the availability of many possibilities for development. This article aims to present a catalogue of options for teacher development. It discusses selected issues relating to the motivation and demotivation of foreign language teachers employed in the general public education system, in particular primary and lower secondary schools, with regard to engaging in professional development.

Opis:
The article discusses the use of conventional metaphors, proposed by G. Lakoff and M. Johnson, as a tool for teaching vocabulary and phraseology at advanced levels of language proficiency in the context of learning Polish as a foreign language. As this methodology is insufficiently represented in teaching materials, the article highlights the advantages of a systematic and long-term approach to teaching metaphors. Such advantages include deepening knowledge of vocabulary by a consideration of metaphorical meanings, understanding the role of metaphors in mental processes; providing insights into Polish culture and mentality as well as into the students’ own cultures, as expressed through their native languages; and stimulating students’ mediation skills. The article also provides examples of exercises to aid the discovery of different types of conventional metaphors and establish an understanding of their function. It concludes by emphasizing the importance of developing collections of exercises and projects – in both printed and interactive forms — to support language learners. Overall, the article promotes the use of conventional metaphors as an effective method for improving linguistic and communicative competence in foreign language learning.
