Opis:
This paper is first of all informative. In the first section, it gives a survey of innovative Master Studies for European secondary teachers, being prepared by an international team from eight countries. Among five main training areas, there are Intercultural Studies, which are to be implemented in another country during a mobility semester. The second section of the paper describes briefly four intercultural modules developed in the EMETTStudies: Education systems in the European Union, Intercultural communication,Selected aspects of European culture and Intercultural education. The third part of the paper gives an example of the teaching material which can be used to raise students’ intercultural awareness. The material is based on a literary text made into a contemporary play, focused on the universal theme of a journey, set in the Polish Tatra Mts. The author of the paper shows how such a material can combine elements of three intercultural modules: Intercultural education, Intercultural communication and Selected aspects of European culture. Finally, the paper points out the role of a language of international communication in the implementation of EMETTStudies during the mobility semester.

Being a reflective teacher is a highly appreciated quality of a good teacher. Reflection is considered to be essential in the job of teaching since it prompts to modify and improve the process of teaching and learning. As experts suggest reflective skills can be practiced and developed due to various teacher education models, programs and techniques. One of the techniques is a teacher portfolio that can consist of many tasks provoking teachers and teacher-trainees to reflect on their teaching. This article presents some research on the content of English teacher-trainees’ reflection and their metareflection. The research outcome provides some knowledge of what they reflect upon, if they do at all, and whether they perceive reflection as valuable in the process of learning teaching.

Opis:
The job of the teacher of Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) requires the ability to teach learners of diverse profiles. Diversity of target groups in training entails diversity of language and learning needs. This paper aims to answer the question: how should LSP teachers be educated so that they can fulfil these needs and expectations? It is suggested that this can be done by preparing and implementing a suitable teaching programme which takes into account the specific character of different educational contexts. The reflections presented here are based on analysis of the Polish educational situation in LSP training. On the basis of these observations, several practice-oriented proposals will be formulated, which could be implemented in the process of language teacher training. Consideration is given, among other issues, to the pedagogical instruction that future LSP teachers need (which depends on the educational context of their future work), the scope of specialist knowledge in the given field that they will find indispensable, and the amount of knowledge of discourse and genre analysis with which they have to be equipped.

Opis:
In professional research literature learner identity, motivation and autonomy are frequently the focus of attention. Identity is believed to be responsible for beliefs and opinions about the process of language attainment. Although much more has been written on learner identity, teacher identity is usually marginalized. The study summarized in this paper focuses on students – future teachers of English (N=32)- who attend M.A. EFL seminars to obtain full teaching qualifications. The students were asked to give answers to seven questionnaire statements referring to their present teaching careers and their former studies. It appeared that students coming from educational backgrounds other than university frequently show gaps in knowledge of second language acquisition theory and practice. What is more, as the ELT seminars cater mostly for students from institutions outside the university, considerable remedial work is needed in order to make it possible to prepare the students to write their M.A. theses independently.

The fact that a successful language instructor has to be a reflective practitioner is undeniable. However, observations made during teacher training courses reveal trainees’ reluctance to self-evaluate their conduct and poorly-developed reflective thinking skills. In an attempt to aid the future teachers’ progress in this area, a series of written tasks was introduced during a course. These included: self-evaluation of one’s strengths and weaknesses, pre and post-microteaching reflections. The analysis of these narratives provides an insight into the trainees’ self-evaluation processes and demonstrates a gradual progress in their abilities from descriptive to productive reflective thinking. Thus the results seem to confirm the positive influence of the intervention.

Opis:
The paper focuses on counteracting discrimination and exclusion in language teacher education by course design which is supportive and inclusive for all students. It also stresses the role of appropriate teacher training in boosting teachers’ sense of preparedness, self-efficacy beliefs and favourable attitudes towards inclusion and accessibility in language education. It promotes inclusive pedagogy (Florian, Black-Hawkins, 2011; Black-Hawkins, Florian, 2012; Florian, Spratt, 2013) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) (Meyer, Rose, Gordon, 2014; CAST, 2018; Torres, Rao, 2019; Novak, 2022) which allow avoiding stigmatisation and marginalisation of students with diverse needs. The paper uses the SCALED course, developed both for initial teacher education (ITE) and continuing professional development (CPD) of language teachers, as an example of good practice. It provides exemplary solutions which promote effective inclusion by increasing accessibility for students with various needs (including special needs and disabilities) through the universal design the course. The paper presents examples of universal design in relation to the course elements such as the goals, structure, tasks, content, materials, ways of providing feedback and conducting assessment.

Opis:
The present study investigates the effect of different types of task implementation on teaching L2 interactional sequences. 81 EFL learners were randomly assigned to one of three experimental groups. In the first experimental group (T1-EG, n = 27), implicit instruction appeared during the pre-task phase, while the post-task phase included an explicit focus on forms. The second group (T2-EG, n = 32) received implicit instruction in the target structures and a reactive focus on form during task performance. The third group (PPP-EG, n = 27) followed a presentation – practice – production (PPP) lesson framework. Groups’ pragmatic production was measured using written discourse completion tasks. Results showed that in the current study, all three groups reported gains, yet the implicit-explicit condition (T1-EG) appeared to be more beneficial for teaching the interactional sequences than the implicit-only (T2-EG) or the PPP (PPP-EG) framework.

A teacher of a foreign language (FL) acquires his/her professional training in the course of higher education in the field of philology, where he/she follows a training program focused on "learning outcomes that include knowledge and skills corresponding to all the requirements of the core curriculum of the teaching subject or the core curriculum of education in the profession, respectively, or the content of the classes taught" (Journal of Laws 2019, item 1450). From the aforementioned provision it should be concluded that FL teachers work in various educational institutions and with audiences with different profiles and needs, including professional ones. The article describes the scope and forms of FL/LSP teacher education in Poland, based on the results of a qualitative analysis of teacher education programs implemented in 2017-2020 at 22 Polish universities. The text presents elements of teacher specialization programs including content specific to specialized glottodidactics at different universities/degrees. They illustrate the diversity of applied educational practices and inspire to implement didactic solutions on a wider scale.

The category of reflection has a long tradition in education. The aim of this article is to focus on the reasons for the difficulties of putting this construct into practice and on educational consequences of this, as well on some paradoxes in education today. Among the main reasons for the difficulties are discussed: the interpretation of reflection, the disregard for the specifics of the profession of the FL teacher in curriculum standards and administrative regulations and the negative influence of market-oriented ideology on education and teacher training. The lack of comprehension of, and/or the misinterpretation of the idea of reflection have negative consequences for education and teacher training. The article concludes with some suggestions for the teacher and pupil education, including a broadly understood idea of reflection.

Mind mapping is primarily a learning technique based on creating pictorial notes (Buzan 2003). In the present article, mind maps were used as a tool for the study of social representations, so as to investigate a broad spectrum of ideas, beliefs, and values related to multilingualism. The study involved a group of French Philology students training to become teachers of the French language, and its aim was to determine the extent to which their initial representations of multilingualism were consistent with the theoretical assumptions of the Council of Europe’s language policy. This policy encourages teachers of foreign languages to develop multilingual competence among students. The analysis of mind maps and the transcription of the group interview leads to the conclusion that the respondents show some areas of ignorance and stereotypical beliefs that should be reflected upon in the course of their further education preparing them to the teaching profession.

Opis:
The subject of this article is the concept of learning by teaching used for the training of teachers of German. Foreign language teacher training is currently no doubt one of the most important challenges resulting from the educational policies of countries within the European Union. In Poland, the necessity for remedial, preventive or promotional actions with regard to the teaching of foreign languages seems to pertain first of all to the teachers of German (and their training facilities), as the justification for German’s presence in the Polish schools is increasingly being questioned. Unfortunately, there are numerous examples in school practice which show that the contemporary approach to the teaching ofGerman as a foreign language continues to follow a traditional, transmission model, with great perseverance and consistency. In order to change this situation, it is necessary to find some effective educational solutions for foreign language teacher training. The search should focus on those educational tools which will enable teachers-to be to meet their teaching goals and conduct the teaching process in line with the current theories of language teaching. One of many such tools, which I have decided to examine more closely, is the concept of learning by teaching (Lernen durch Lehren), initiated by Jean Pol Martin. This paper presents the main assumptions of the concept of LdL and describes a training programme (developed following the LdL approach) carried out with the students of faculty of German who are future teachers ofGerman. The conclusions drawn seem quite promising for teacher training.
