Opis:
A certificate proving the holder’s proficiency in a foreign language for specific purposes (LSP) should guarantee that the person submitting such a document is able to perform specific professional tasks using the particular foreign language. Therefore, an examination measuring such competencies should meet certain requirements and have certain characteristics. What are the differences between testing languages for general and for specific purposes? Are these differences visible in existing certificate examinations? Do the language certificates issued on the basis of LSP examinations give employers a guarantee that the employee can handle professional tasks which demand the use of the foreign language in question? In an attempt to answer these queries, the article will outline the theoretical principles behind testing languages for specific purposes and try to compare the theory and practice through an analysis of several LSP exams available on the market. Reflecting on the observations, it will also try to determine why the reality is often so distant from the theoretical foundations.

Opis:
Not often do we encounter a specialized foreign language course at a university humanities department. However, why should foreign lan-guage students not be provided with practical knowledge which may be useful in future professional life? The article presents an experi-ment conducted with the participation of MA students of German studies at Warsaw University. The aim is to teach language skills, as well as convey professional knowledge in the CLIL formula, which is becoming more and more popular. It is consistent with requests of students themselves. Logistics is a useful introduction to various branches of the economy. Considering that the German language is becoming more and more important in business-related professions, the topics discussed in this course may be required in logistics, for-warding and other areas. In addition to traditional logistics topics, such as transport, storage and waste disposal, we also discuss topics such as business correspondence or negotiations and practice translations.

Opis:
In our globalised world, citizens need to develop increasingly specialised language skills in order to meet the needs of industry. However, the resulting increase in the number of LSP courses to meet this need has not been followed by an increase in the provision of specific training for LSP teachers, as a number of national studies have pointed out. The objective of this article is twofold: first, it aims to find out whether there is a global (international) lack of specific training offered to LSP teachers that could be identified through a large-scale study; secondly, its purpose is to show whether a truly global response to the need for such training is an effective and viable solution. By studying two datasets – a needs analysis and feedback from participants in an LSP Teacher Education MOOC – we show that the lack of specific training in the teaching of LSPs is a global need and that a global response to this need, in the form of a MOOC offering cross-linguistic training applicable to all specialised varieties of all languages, seems to be an effective and viable option, as long as it is able to combine local and global scales, in a resolutely ‘glocal’ approach.

Opis:
Languages for specific purposes (LSP) are taught in two different contexts – for academic and for professional needs. In the first case, they are primarily tools for acquiring and processing knowledge, which is possible by knowing a number of terms. That is why B2 is indicated as the optimal level for starting their acquisition. LSP for professional purposes are primarily intended for effective communication and can be taught independently from general language proficiency. In this paper, the authors describe the findings of a survey in which Chinese students of Polish language and culture were asked to express their opinions on the publication Truchcikiem z Kopernikiem. The analysis aims to show if this book is a suitable tool for training LSP in an academic context. It covers levels from A to C (CEFR) and offers training of language in higher education for academic purposes as well as practical language training in situations typical for everyday life at the university. The respondents, representing A2-B1+ proficiency levels, found the book useful for language learning (70%) and for studying in Poland (92%). At the same time, however, 45% of them considered that the exercises were too difficult (for 50% they were adequate), which was explained by the high complexity of vocabulary. They also expressed their expectations for a higher number of grammar tasks in the book.
