    Opis:
    The main of this article is to present the results of a pilot study carried out among 476 students of selected foreign languages at Warsaw University. The research covered the following  issues: (1) students’ interest in various courses included in philology studies (literature, linguistics, foreign language didactics, etc.); (2) the dominant motivation for undertaking philological studies and (3) students’ initial career plans. The research is diagnostic and descriptive and it will be continued at over a dozen Polish universities. The main goal of this project is to build  a social representation of foreign language studies in Poland today. The Polish Association of Modern Languages (PTN) is a patron of the study.

    Opis:
    The aim of the article is to reflect upon the possibilities offered by triangulation in qualitative research, with particular emphasis placed on action research. Various types of triangulation have been presented, including the most recommended multiple triangulation. A variety of advantages and functions of triangulation have been shown, first and foremost the ones which refer to dynamic, systemic and multicausal phenomena. All the theoretical considerations have been illustrated by the author’s own research conducted in Poland, in one of the bilingual sections with Spanish language in the secondary school. The research concerned the development of students’ discursive competence within the genre of an intercultural comparison, and its conditioning. The research used multiple triangulation: of data sources, of researchers, of methods and of data analysis, as well as temporal and special triangulation. The investigation is finished with conclusions of methodological nature.

    Opis:
    The following paper addresses online learning in the Covid-19 pandemic and focuses on foreign language learning in the context of foreign language courses in higher education. The aim of the study is to investigate e-courses which the pandemic caused to become a substitute for face-to-face courses. Interviews were conducted with students from the University of Gdańsk and the Academy of Music in Gdańsk to find out their opinions. The research findings showed that organisation-related aspects, such as time saved, convenience or the ability to work professionally and study at the same time, were recognised as positives of online learning, while the actual educational goals, such as effectiveness, motivation and group collaboration, were seen rather as negatives of the situation. The work of teachers and their commitment were viewed positively. We did not recognise any major differences between online teaching and face-to-face interaction in this respect.

    This article’s main aim is to present the results of research concerning the barriers in foreign language learning. It analyses various obstacles indicated by 342 students from both philological and non-philological departments. Those factors have been subdivided into three groups, each dealing with a different type of barriers: external objective barriers, barriers associated with behavior and competence of the teacher as well as concerning language courses, and, finally, cognitive, affective, and personality related barriers.

    Opis:
    An exceptionally linguistically talented student should have all the predispositions to be multi-linguistic. The reason is that such skills, at least potentially, assume high predispositions to learn all foreign languages. And even though the process of language learning and its efficiency depends on many other factors, one of them is the assessment of one’s skills and potential by the linguistically talented student. The aim of the article is to present convictions of students identified as linguistically talented with respect to their skills and achievements concerning foreign language learning. A large part of the paper deals with the presentation of theoretical aspects related to linguistic skills and a short analysis of selected factors that influence the development of linguistic skills in students, in particular the assessment of own skills and possibilities by students (self-assessment).

    Opis:
    Adapting foreign language teaching to the requirements of studentswith special educational needs requires prior diagnosis of the developmental potential of the pupils concerned. Because of the educational and rehabilitative character of foreign language learning in studentswith language and speech deficiencies, the diagnosis addresses the possibilities of using foreign language learning in developing general and linguistic competencies in both languages (native and foreign). The article presents the aims of diagnosing linguistic communicative competencies in the context of foreign language teaching. The differences between speech diagnosis and diagnosis performed for the needs of foreign language teaching are discussed, based on cases of pupils with deficiencies in their native language (Polish). The evaluation of the students’ competencies involved reformulation as an instrument of linguistic diagnosis; learning strategies were also considered in the assessment.
