Opis:
The increasing number of migrant learners in Polish schools poses a new challenge not only for teachers of the language of school education, i.e. Polish, but also for teachers of other subjects, including English. Depending on the migrant learner’s country of origin, English may be his/her foreign, third (or additional) or even first language. This situation increases the heterogeneity of the language group and raises new challenges, which according to Ruiz’s (1984) conceptualization could be approached by the teacher either as a threat to the monolingual policy in the classroom, or as a resource that has the potential to enrich foreign language lessons by developing plurilingual and intercultural competences. On the basis of available research (Rokita-Jaśkow, 2019, 2021), the article presents the challenges teachers face along with suggestions for teaching solutions.

Opis:
The article investigates relationships between national/ ethnic identity and languages used in the school context. The impact of imposed, attributed, regained and selected identities on first and second language proficiency is analyzed on numerous examples drawn from the areas of history, literature and culture. Approaches to bi-and monolingualism and bi-and monoculturalism are then presented with special emphasis on the role of stereotypes. Linguistic factors which influence success and failure are discussed vis-à-vis immigration and re-emigration. Attention is given to difficulties encountered by students using restricted L1 codes as well as to problems faced by pupils lacking proficiency in the language of schooling. Implications are sought for language education in the school system.

The aim of this paper is to relate the concept of ESP to the idea of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) to work out a platform for the conceptualization of academic language as a context-reduced means of communication (Bernstein, 1971; 1999). Subsequently, the concept of talk-types (Moate, 2011) will be presented as a way of counteracting language de-contextualization and engendering restructuring of knowledge and the language itself. Theoretical considerations will be supported with the presentation of research on classroom interaction. It is aimed at highlighting how expert language is mediated in content learning with types of classroom talk and how the process of languaging (Swain, 2006a) facilitates both “taming” (Lankiewicz, 2013b) of the elaborated code and acquisition of expert knowledge.

Although language learning strategies are a well-researched topic, there are still some aspects which need further investigation and one of these is the application of strategic devices in the second and third language. The following article seeks to compare how learners of two foreign languages use strategies and shows both differences and similarities between the application of strategic devices by presenting the results of a research project in which a questionnaire and an interview were used as the research tools. Strategies were found to be used more often when learning the L2 than during the process of learning the L3. Dissimilarities were observed in the specific types of strategies used, especially in the case of metacognitive strategies, while similarities were noted in the use of affective strategies.

Opis:
Intercultural communicative competence in Russian word stress acquisition refers to effective and appropriate management of interaction in various conversational situations that require specific orthoepic habits in the area of contemporary Russian accentual system. Every natural communicative situation needs informal, spoken language rather that standard Russian taught in classroom environment. Therefore, contemporary spoken Russian with its accentual characteristics needs to be examined. The research conducted on the group of Russian, Belorussian and Ukrainian youtubers indicates that the analyzed speech contains some specific derivatives which are characteristic of colloquial Russian: semelfactive verbs and their past participle forms with stressed suffix -ну́(ть)/-ану́(ть), masculine derivatives with stressed suffix -о́с, neuter nouns with the suffix -ов(о)/-ев(о), masculine nouns with the stressed suffix -а́к/-я́к, -а́н/-я́н, -о́н, feminine nouns with an accented suffix -у́х(а)/-ю́х(а), deverbal nouns with suffix -ёж, diminutives with suffixes -чик, -у́шк(а)/-ю́шк(а), -а́шк(а)/-я́шк(а), relational adjectives with stressed suffix -о́в(ый). Furthermore, there is no significant difference between Ukrainian, Belorussian and Russian analyzed material in terms of accentuation apart from one tendency, which does not seem to appear in Russians’ speech. Ukrainians and Belorussians tend to stress root in short verbs of past tense feminine forms.

Opis:
Although a dominating paradigm in foreign language teaching in the past decades has been to use foreign language as often as possible, voices are now being raised that there is a place for students’ mother tongue in a language classroom. As the present article shows, both the critics and the supporters of the monolingual principle put forward commonsensical arguments in support of their stands. These arguments are outlined in the first part of the present article together with a brief look at the history of foreign-language-only approaches in language teaching methodology. What follows is a report on a study conducted by the author among 20 teachers in Poland with the aim of finding out the extent of and reasons for using mother tongue. The study demonstrated that on average teacher talking time in 60% comprises foreign language. Students’ first language is primarily used for teaching grammar and translating vocabulary.

Opis:
The article investigates the teaching of French as a third or additional language (De Angelis, 2007) at the beginning level to international students from different language backgrounds and their learning of that language, as perceived by the students themselves, as well as revealed by tests. Special attention is paid to the areas of difficulty perceived by the students, their perception of the similarities and differences between French and their native languages as well as between French and other languages they already know, especially English, and of the teaching strategies, which included cross-linguistic awareness-raising. Assessment of their progress in French is also considered. The study involves a combination of two methods: long-term classroom observation and assessment of 29 students, and a questionnaire filled out by 20 of those students. As the results show, the participants’ awareness of similarities and differences is fairly high, but their attitudes towards awareness-raising, feedback, etc. vary considerably. The tests are both formative and summative (but also providing feedback). However, the feedback was mutual: apart from giving feedback to the students, the author could also modify her teaching according to their problems and wishes concerning the French classes.

Opis:
This study explores the link between language and culture in the context of translating specialist texts. The starting point is the assumption that each text contains a cultural element, even if it is “only” a professional text. The illustration of the theoretical considerations is a comparative analysis of translations (from French into Polish) of press articles in the field of economics. The analysis of selected press materials shows that their cultural value is not a peripheral phenomenon, but constitutes an important sense-creating element. In the process of their translation, the translator's tasks include not only changing the original linguistic structures, but also changing the cultural perspective embedded in the text. The carriers of the cultural point of view are both single lexical units, as well as linguistic constructions and complex conceptual networks. Based on the research, the authors conclude that it seems particularly important to sensitize students to respect the genre standards of the target language and to understand the need to reconceptualize the original conceptual metaphor and change the deictic perspective of the text.

Russian language acquisition by Polish students is understood as effective and appropriate interaction in various conversational situations. This requires specific habits in the use of the contemporary Russian linguistic system. The use of a language can be examined in a natural communicative situation, which needs informal, spoken language. The usage of English loanwords in spoken Polish and Russian is frequent, which is why the characteristics of spoken language in contemporary spoken Russian and Polish needs to be examined. Research conducted on a group of Polish, Russian, Belorussian and Ukrainian Youtubers shows that their speech contains some specific derivatives which are characteristic of colloquial Russian and Polish. It also contains groups of English loanwords: assimilated nouns, verb and adjective derivatives with productive suffixes. The study shows that English loanword adaptation differs in Polish and Russian, which reveals system differences between two related languages. Comparison of the most productive word formation processes in Russian and Polish can help to overcome language interference and improve the teaching of Russian to Polish students in general.

Opis:
In the recent years the number of migrant children in Polish schools has grown considerably. Many of them barely speak our language, most of them do not know it at all. Thanks to the state language support program most of the pupils within a year or two learn how to communicate in Polish. This ability however is often of little help during subject lessons due to immense differences between communicative and an academic language variety. The text presents the results of a preliminary study undertaken to prove that academic lexis makes on migrant children tremendous demands and to show that due to its specificity and quantity its teaching has to be both, explicit and well-organized. To achieve the research goal of the lexical material was excerpted from one of the history textbooks for primary school fourth graders and then subjected to detailed analysis which aimed at its structured organization. The paper ends with pedagogical implications: it presents some strategies for developing lexical competence of migrant pupils which can help them to meet the challenge and learn subject vocabulary more effectively.
