Opis:
Since ancient times, curiosity (curiositas) was perceived as a misdeed, negative passion resulting from an irrepressible drive in the pursuit of knowledge and associated with conceit. However, its positive aspect did not go unnoticed. This was associated with moderate inquisitiveness, which did not exceed the limits of cognition, and was determined by the existing worldview (curiositas versus studiositas). There existed a conviction that women, being closer to nature and unable to control their emotions, were more likely to succumb to undesirable curiosity; the mythical Pandora and biblical Eve being cited as examples to further underscore the point. Hence, they were taught the ability to refrain from wanting to satisfy their curiosity. In spite of this, 17th century Europe witnessed the emergence of women, many of whom were authors of scholarly essays and dissertations, works of encyclopedic nature, of textbooks and manuals on natural philosophy, “books of secrets”, of women’s writing, and of poems describing the universe. In the Republic of Poland, though, this type of creative activity was, for quite some time, met with utter incomprehension or no acceptance, if not outright criticism.

Opis:
The next parliamentary elections in Poland will be held on the basis of the amended elec- toral law. The changes introduced involve a quota system: the ballots are required to provide for at least 35% of women and at least 35% of men. Nearly a hundred years passed from 1918, when Polish women first won voting rights, till the President of Poland signed the so-called parity law. It would not be true, however, to say that this was a century of struggle for the equality of rights of men and women in our country. It was only after 1989 that efficient steps could be taken in this area in Poland. Therefore, the quota system that has been introduced, to be tested in practice soon, is actually the consequence of twenty years of endeavors. The advocates of such a solution consider this to be the first step towards electoral parity. Following the solutions that numerous European countries have introduced, public debate in Poland increasingly more often refers to proposals to ‘spread’ the quota system, and then parity, also to other domains, such as management or education. The opening of a serious debate on these issues will to a large extent depend on the results of the recent quota changes of the electoral law.

During my research I found many similarities related to women’s image retained in proverbs of both nations, but also some differences. There are common characteristics conditioned by the similarities of women’s position and role in the Korean and Polish history. For example, women were, in both cultures, the inferior sex, illogical beings, the objects subordinated culturally and legally to men, the creatures prone to betrayal, chatty, clever, sly, mischievous, vain, extravagant and quarrelsome. Despite the apparent misogyny, the proverbs—both Korean and Polish—acknowledge in various aspects, the existence of women, who are better and nobler than men, also signal significant influence of women upon men. In addition, the authors of proverbs appreciate such positive qualities of women as feminine goodness, gentleness, economy, being a good companion of life for a man, etc. In contrast, clear differences between the image of women in the Korean and Polish proverbs are related to the fact that in the Polish proverbs the dominant image of women is the image of a person who is clever, often associated with the devil, which in the Korean proverbs does not occur at all. Another significant difference between the Korean and the Polish proverbs consists in the presentation of a tragic fate of women who, in the former Korea depended absolutely on men, believing in many superstitions associated with women.

Podgórnik creates pictures of unsubmissive and indyvidualistic women, which must exist out of main discourses: patriarchal and feministic. But the most important in this poetry is language used for poetic but subversive descriptions of painful experiences, also by using intertextual references.

The paper discusses the position of women in Romani society. The author presents the var- ious roles a romni (Romani for woman) plays. She refers to the rules of the moral and ethical code (romanipen) that significantly affects female behavior, determines the relationship be- tween females and males, and assigns women a lower position in society than men. The paper also discusses the ‘impurities’ that constitute a specific weapon Romani women can wield against men. The author observes the changes that are taking place in the world of modern romnis. They are increasingly more educated, professionally active and make independent decisions con- cerning their own future. It should be borne in mind, however, that they continue to live in a closed community that guards its traditions, language and privacy. To change the life of Romani women would mean their leaving this community and abandoning the fundamental principles of Romani life, which is difficult. Romani women do not struggle for these princi- ples to be abandoned completely, thus giving them equal rights. They continue to guard their traditions and hearth and home.

It is undoubtedly true that a number of British women turned their back on religion, from the beginning of the period of the cultural revolution of the 1960s and onwards. To what might we attribute these defections and the taking up of a new nonreligious identity?  Was it the change in sexual mores and the rise of second wave feminism, the increase in women entering higher education opening up new worldviews to them or increasing affluence? This article examines a variety of factors through the eyes of self-identified women atheists/humanists most of whom have lived through that period. It notes that, while these factors may well be significant to different degrees for different women, the turn to atheism, specifically, results largely from women having been damaged by religion and the deep emotional impact thus left behind. The turn to atheism is not a uniform experience as the women are enmeshed in differing types of ‘emotional regime’ which affects how they respond.

Opis:
Nowadays, more and more fields of knowledge undertake research on homosexuality issues. Analysis of that topic takes place on many basis depending on researcher’s subject of interest. Pedagogy peculiarly concentrates, among other things, on individuals’ relations with their origin families – the combination of non-heteronormativity and functioning in family environment in the context of life’s quality is a new approach which, so far, had been poorly described. Presented article aims to deliver knowledge and findings connected to quality of life of homosexual women to extent of their relations with family members. The research was conducted in accordance with qualitative trend, mainly by individual case method. The applied technique was an interview and the data collection instrument was its questionnaire. The examined group included eight intentionally selected women that come from podlaskie and śląskie provinces. Gathered information was transcribed, coded and categorized within the scope of selected elements of construct such as life quality. Women’s statements were presented in accordance with descriptive-comparative approach, so firstly, their subjective feelings had been described and then that report was related to some objective factors. Depicted results are the part of the answer on research problem which is: ‘how interpersonal relations of homosexual women are created?’. Analysis and interpretation of gathered data show three models of relations appearing between questioned women and their families of origin, those are: acceptation of non-heteronormativity, ignorance of that sexual orientation, repression/avoidance of receiving an information about homosexuality with sporadic attempts at ‘converting’ their daughters/sisters. Women who were accepted by their families (two of them) are characterized by high subjective and objective level of life quality to extent of interpersonal relations, social life and mental condition. Those who did not ‘came out of the closet’ to their relatives (another two) and those who were rejected by them (four of them) are described as women with low level of quality of life among contacts with other people (objective factors), but some of them think differently – they describe those relations as positive. That discrepancy in evaluation might be a result of using so-called tactic of apparent mysteriousness – questioned women and members of their families pretend that homosexuality does not exist. The family relations are disordered in most cases; because of it life quality of homosexual women is lower than other members of our society. Appropriate education in terms of toleration could improve their situation, what is more, forming support groups for parents with non-heternonormative children also might help.

Society attributes to women a number of features, qualities, defects and social functions. These traits shape a cultural image of women, and this biased picture is functional in social relationships and it is reflected on the terms a language uses to refer to women. The purpose of this paper is to describe the perception of old women in Roman society by means of the associations and connotations carried by Latin terms anus, anicula and vetula.

The increase in women’s participation in political life in recent decades has resulted in research explaining how women’s presence (or absence) changes the form, nature and content of politics. However, a gender perspective is still lacking, especially in the relationship between political participation and violence. Violence against women in politics is increasingly recognised around the world as a significant barrier to women’s participation in political life. The aim of the research is to find out whether politically active women are more exposed to violence (physical, psychological, symbolic, sexual, economic) than politically active men and whether violence against politicians is related to belonging to a political party. The research conducted among Polish politicians (n-88) confirms that both women and men who are politically active experience violence. However, women are more often attacked psychologically, symbolically and sexually. Politicians acting under the banner of a party are much more likely to experience violence than non-partisan politicians. Physical violence is very rare, and the level of experiencing violence in all its forms decreases with age.
Wzrost udziału kobiet w życiu politycznym w ostatnich dziesięcioleciach zaowocował badaniami wyjaśniającymi, w jaki sposób obecność (lub nieobecność) kobiet zmienia formę, charakter i treść polityki. Nadal jednak brakuje perspektywy płci, szczególnie w odniesieniu do związku pomiędzy udziałem w życiu politycznym a przemocą.

What opportunities and risks are associated with their functioning in the organization depending on its paradigm? Does women’s leadership change its meaning and lose its specific character, with the development of human individual and social consciousness? If so, how does it take place?

Opis:
This paper describes the role and the place of the woman in African society, with particular focus on the issues of leadership, peace and security. Although women in Africa are more numerous than men, their position is not an enviable one. Thus this work will attempt to describe the causes which prevent the female kind from coming to the fore and being truly equal to men. In order to achieve that aim, one should consider the place of the woman, not only in the traditional society but also in what one sees as the contemporary realities of Africa. The author demonstrates that in most African countries, women had long been excluded from enjoying political rights, and that they have gained such entitlement only recently. Among the reasons which would account for this absence of women in the realm of leadership, one should draw attention to the patriarchal model of authority one acquires as a child and the burden of ancestral tradition which hinges upon the primacy of the male. There are also the additional burdens imposed over time by religions, which had always relegated the woman to the background. The woman has always been associated with the weaker sex, while being the one who gave life. The scope of this paper is limited to the presence of women in the public sphere, that is to say to their leadership in the affairs of peace and security, where women have or may have a certain influence. Certain difficulties encountered by African women with respect to leadership are also experienced by women in other parts of the world. With a few exceptions, all societies have been and continue to be governed by the same principles of exclusion. In Africa, just as everywhere else, there is no need for profound studies to conclude that feminist literature is not particularly abundant. This paper represents an exploration of a subject of no minor importance, namely the leadership of women in preventing and management of conflicts in Africa. Nevertheless, it is limited to a general view and does not analyse specific cases in each of the African countries.
