Literary versions of the legend of Tristan and Isolde are suitable especially for an analysis of the issues connected with the point of view, particularly if it is understood in the literal, visual meaning, which is here closely associated with the narratological meaning. Lovers are constantly hiding, being followed, then found in the farthest recesses and exposed to gaze of the others, hostile or sympathetic. These gazes decide about their fate; a gaze is therefore an instrument of power, control, and judgment. In the first place, though, a gaze is the instrument of understanding and interpretation, which in many scenes are both shown as complex, problematic and non-obvious. Therefore, the opposition between favorable and hostile gazes is not always so strong: especially the gaze of King Mark, torn between the contradictory feelings for his wife and nephew, is characterized by ambivalence. This ambivalence can also be discerned in the changeable attitudes of some characters, hesitations of narrators and in numerous variants of particular versions of the legend.

Modern reality is ambivalent, heterogenous, ambiguous and unpredictable. The living conditions it creates aren’t easy for adolescing people forced to realize many developmental tasks. Among theese tasks is forming a mature vision of reality. This article presents the postmodern view of the world from the perspective of young people, based on research conducted on high school graduates. It shows young people as very reflective, critical towards certain aspects of postmodernity but at the same time, due to highly developed adaptational skills, able to find their place in the world and make use of its possibilities.

This article concerns Bronisław Malinowski’s ethnographical theory  of magical word. His theory was a revolutionary one for two reasons (1)  he claimed that magical word is not an instrument of understanding of „primitive mentality” (2) he argued that analysis of magical word  demanded abandoning  of  textual  bias  which  entailed  our  seeing  linguistic  genres  as semantically autonomous texts. Malinowski was not so interested in the question of literacy. He  remarked, though,  that  writing  determinated  our  linguistic  reflection  and  that  magical word, as another oral linguistic genres, demanded a radical rejection of textual conceptions of  meaning,  language and folklore.  Although  Malinowski’s  methodological  stipulations were not always consistent and his rejection of textual bias was fairly half, his abandonment of the conception of „magical world view” which is  a foundation for uses of magic is still up-to-date.

The main task of the research was to investigate and differentiate the historical stages of the formation of Ukraine’s geopolitical view, based on the Ukrainian statehood history and works of key researches, which had been directly influenced by the evolution of its geopolitical consciousness and thinking. In the article, three main historical stages of Ukraine’s geopolitical view formation were differentiated and the reason why the state’s geopolitical view gradually transformed into the state’s geopolitical interest after Ukraine attained independence was substantiated. The article includes a SWOT analysis of Ukraine’s geopolitical location, based on which the state’s geopolitical interests of local, regional and global levels were represented. As Ukraine is in the field of geopolitical orientation of many countries not only in Europe but also around the world, the study of the state’s geopolitical view formation and current transformation is topical and can be useful for foreign researchers.

The need for value-oriented upbringing is obvious and necessary, though difficult in the world full of contrasts, conflicts and plurality of worldviews. Upbringing to values is aimed at preparing children and young people to individual, conscious selection and hierarchization of values and being guided by them in all areas of their personal and professional lives. Axiological education helps to gain the ability to distinguish between good and evil, truth and falsehood, selfishness and altruism. A pedagogical approach to values has become the subject of many scientific considerations and discussions among parents and teachers. The main purpose of the article is to try and locate the meeting points, but also the substantial discrepancies developed in the course of history, the aesthetics which devises its own notion of landscape and the empirical sciences, humanist geography in particular, which resorts to a broader understanding, incorporating it into the notion of environment. By drawing upon the Renaissance idea of landscape, I point to three factors: landscape painting along with the perspective, theatre and the development of cartography, which significantly contributed to the evolution of an aesthetic notion of landscape. The environmental aesthetics may however play a conciliatory role between the traditional, aesthetic presentation and the standpoint of humanist geography, if one takes into account the assumptions of the latter in terms of shaping the renewed cultural notion of landscape.

The article is exposing some results of the study in bee-keepers’ spell as a featuring trait of Ukrainians’ world-view practice; the present research is the first work of such a kind in the home ethnology. The spell belongs to that sort of ritual text that might be characterized by a vivid and most active speech with its fully evident magical strength. Spell as a genre of folklore refers to peculiar items owing to its archaic nature as well as to utilitarian functionalism, especially verbal destination, unity of sacral and profane articulation. The world-view ground of spell has been always heterogeneous as that originated and developed through the ages  with  fixing  so  prime  of  human world-consciousness  as  historically  later  (Christian) epistemological and axiological picture of the reality. In the paper the bee-keepers’ spell has been  considered  because  of  its  religious  and magical  contents  that  has  quite  significant spread so in everyday bee-keeping practice (occasional aspect), as in the contents of yearly religious  festivals  (the  calendar  one).  The  aim  of  bee-keepers’  spell  has   been  getting a concrete practical result, i.e. successful functioning of apiary.

The general aim of this outline is to indicate the diverse merits of women’s personal document literature for the study of women’s independence discourse. The specific objective is to identify the various points of view (understood as a linguistic category) that emerge in the texts regarding war and to reconstruct the image of war that emerges from the narratives of the female authors. Consequently, it can be said that the value of women’s personal document literature for researching women’s independence discourse is determined not only by its different perspective (presumably distinct from the male or official perspective) but also by the internal diversity within this discourse, which is connected to the broadly understood ideology.

The meaning of emotions and the meaning of words- emotions’ labels are described in studiem about emotions. Although there are some differences between these two domains, most studies about understanding emotions use lexical approach. On the other hand, the nonspecific limits inspired by language can be noticed in the area of changes in emotion meaning. Two studies were conducted and metaheuristic postulates were involved with the aim of breaking these limits. The denotation and emotional complexity were examined/analyzed in the first study. In the second study the atypical connotations taken from the psychology of creativity were used. The outcomes were discussed in relation to abstraction and metaphor as a result it is possible to go beyond literal understanding of emotions and express emotions verbally.

The article is an attempt at analysing the biographical episode which inclined Proust to rework Bergotte’s death in In Search of Lost Time. Renzi shows how literature (or more generally: art) and life intertwine. By analysing fragments of Proust’s famous novel as well as his records and letters, the author presents the French writer as an avid fan of Vermeer’s paintings. He also touches upon the history of the influence of the Dutch painter on Proust’s works.

When we examine the empirical investigations of motivation in second and foreign language learning, even those drawing upon the latest theoretical paradigms, such as the L2 motivational self system (Dörnyei, 2009), it becomes clear that many of them still fail to take account of its dynamic character and temporal variation. This may be surprising in view of the fact that the need to adopt such a process-oriented approach has been emphasized by a number of theorists and researchers (e.g., Dörnyei, 2000, 2001, 2009; Ushioda, 1996; Williams & Burden, 1997), and it lies at the heart of the model of second language motivation proposed by Dörnyei and Ottó (1998). It is also unfortunate that few research projects have addressed the question of how motivation changes during a language lesson as well as a series of lessons, and what factors might be responsible for fluctuations of this kind. The present paper is aimed to rectify this problem by reporting the findings of a classroom-based study which investigated the changes in the motivation of 28 senior high school students, both in terms of their goals and intentions, and their interest and engagement in classroom activities and tasks over the period of four weeks. The analysis of the data collected by means of questionnaires, observations and interviews showed that although the reasons for learning remain relatively stable, the intensity of motivation is indeed subject to variation on a minute-to-minute basis and this fact has to be recognized even in large-scale, cross-sectional research in this area.

The aim of the article is to present the linguistic image of Polish scholars and research- ers whose profiles, biographies and obituaries were published in the Warsaw weekly newspaper Wędrowiec (Traveller) in the second half of the nineteenth century. Ana- lysing the collected texts, the author distinguished a set of seven aspects which were taken into account by the journalists of Wędrowiec to present the profiles of the schol- ars. Those aspects are the following: the subject of research, scientific achievements, journalistic and publishing activities, didactic and educational activities, science-pro- moting activities, organisational activities, awards and distinctions. They were deter- mined by the points of view adopted by the authors of the texts. There are three domi- nant points of view: the one of an expert, a Pole and a positivist. These points of view coexist and complement each other. The expert and specialist informed the reader in detail about the scientific career and achievements of the scholars. The Polish publi- cist expressed his joy at the international success of his countrymen. He observed their research and scientific achievements with attention; especially those that influenced the development of fields important for the country. The positivist and journalist noticed and emphasised the utilitarian dimension of the scientific and research activities of the scholars.

This paper presents an exploratory case study of the classroom motivational dynamics of an English as a foreign language (EFL) teacher at a Japanese technology college. The article examines how motivation evolved in-context over various timescales through interactions with affect and identity. An introspective research journal generated rich, qualitative data concerning fluctuations in teacher motivation over one academic year. The analysis also drew on student journal data to provide a different perspective on teacher reflections. The study applied a thematic analysis, with “theoretical comparison” (Corbin & Strauss, 2008) to understand teacher motivation from a “person-in-context relational view” (Ushioda, 2009). The article utilises the properties of complex systems to render insight to the evolution of teacher motivation as open to influences “external” to the classroom, yet fundamentally tied to adaptive experiences with a particular class group. A variety of diagrammatic tools are also employed to illuminate the relational development of teacher motivation, affect and identity constantly occurring over interacting timescales.

While perennial in the research landscape, empirical work investigating second language (L2) study emotions has proliferated in the past ten years (Dewaele, 2019). Nevertheless, this article argues there is space for more holistic yet detailed, social yet individual perspectives when conducting such research. As one avenue, the paper explores the potential of a “small lens” approach (Ushioda, 2016) to delve into particular emotional events in situ from learner-internal and learner-external points of view. It details an example of such an approach put into practice, in which the author examined the emergence of emotionally significant episodes for English as a foreign language undergraduates in Japan during short conversation sessions. The research explored data from discursive (video-recordings and transcripts of short conversations) and introspective (learner journals) angles. As a result, it was possible to observe the ways in which students’ emotional moves were both afforded by and acted on those of the other through their social interactions, and through interactions with additional aspects of their ongoing psychologies and relationships. The article thus aims to promote further situated L2 emotion research examining the dynamic interplay between various aspects of learners’ psychologies and the co-formed social context.
