    Digital games are a medium of constantly growing socio-cultural significance, which strengthens and expands their potential to influence players. Participation in digital games, however, is indirect and thus accomplished through an avatar – a hero, an object or a more abstract structure that allows the player to impose his will in the game world. At the same time, male avatars embody a specific type of masculinity, symbolically affecting the user. This mutual interaction can be of particular importance in shaping the ideas and views around one’s masculinity or its patterns in the cultural and social dimension. In this sense, players learn from games how to be a man. This article constitutes an attempt at capturing the leading types of masculinity among the main protagonists of the most popular digital games. The study shows that many popular games reproduce the stereotypical narratives of dominant masculinity as understood by Zbyszko Melosik. The article contains an attempt at indicating the reasons for this state of affairs and the possible consequences for the players.

    Artykuł odnosi się do książki Reprezentacje i konstrukty dzieciństwa w literaturze oraz kulturze XX i XXI wieku, red. Alicja Dąbrowska, Robert Mielhorski, Beata Morzyńska-Wrzosek, Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Kazimierza Wielkiego, Bydgoszcz 2022. To zbiorowa monografia poświęcona prezentacji obrazu/figury dziecka w literaturze fikcyjnej i intymistycznej, literaturze dla dorosłych i dla dzieci, a także w podręcznikach, w teatrze, fotografii, kartach gratulacyjnych, malarstwie. Sposób ukazywania dziecka w przestrzeni sztuki zmienia się. Współcześnie portrety dziecka wahają się między reprezentacją a konstrukcją jego obrazu, ale zdaje się przeważać przekonanie twórców i świadomość odbiorców, że każdej prezentacji jest bliżej do kreacji niż do „mimetycznego odwzorowania”. Autorzy prezentują szeroki wachlarz ujęć, co omawianą książkę czyni ciekawą lekturą.
    The article refers to the book Representations and Constructs of Childhood in the Literature and Culture of the 20th and 21st Centuries, edited by Alicja Dąbrowska, Robert Mielhorski and Beata Morzyńska-Wrzosek, Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Kazimierza Wielkiego, Bydgoszcz 2022. This is a collective monograph devoted to the presentation of the image/figure of the child in fictional and intimate literature, literature for adults and for children, as well as in textbooks, theatre, photography, congratulatory cards, and painting. The way the child is portrayed in the art space is changing. Contemporary portrayals of the child fluctuate between representation and construction of his or her image, but the conviction of the creators and the awareness of the audience that any presentation is closer to creation than to “mimetic representation” seems to prevail. The authors present a wide range of approaches, which makes the book under review an interesting read.

    The Upper Silesian conurbation is a unique area in Poland due to its polycentric nature, expressed in the interaction of a group of cities. The paper describes the transformation of the image of the “metropolis” in the Silesian Voivodeship, addressing the issues of complex relations between the cities of the Upper Silesian Metropolitan Area. The results of the qualitative content analysis of strategic programs of the municipalities participating in the metropolitan union since 2017 highlighted two main categories of the concept of “metropolis” – a chance and a threat. Then, the selected aspects shaping the identity of the institution of metropolitan management were demonstrated based on the regional press discourse analysis. Thus, this paper explores a path of metropolitan integration of the municipalities in the face of the emergence of a new metropolitan institution – from rivalry tendencies based on the historical and cultural divisions of the region and the revival of local identities to conciliatory attitudes.

    The aim of the article is to present the theory of social representations which is not well-known in the Polish pedagogy and which may constitute an interesting theoretical and methodological perspective for the study of the educational discourse. The theory itself is interdisciplinary and therefore may be useful in research carried out within various academic disciplines both in the humanities and social sciences. Theoretical analyses will also concern the possibilities of conducting research of educational discourse within the framework of the social representation theory with the application of the collective biography writing which may be perceived as the critical discourse analysis.

    The purpose of this article is to provide a theoretical framework for the contemporary process of political communication. It emphasizes the changing roles of the senders/receivers within the process and it postulates unprecedented opportunities offered by the emergence of the New Media. As for the empirical research, we discuss the results of the study that has been conducted to further the understanding of how the younger generation, aged 20-25 (herein referred to as Digital Natives), process and comprehend the news media content, with special attention to political messages. It was initially hypothesized that the main source of information about politics and the surrounding world is the Internet and the social media in particular. The paper discusses the results of the study showing that the alternative news websites and social media, understood as the opposite to what is known as the mainstream media, have been gaining ground. Concurrently, the study discovered the students’ declining interest in traditional institutional mainstream-controlled media (i.e. press, radio or television).

    This contribution proposes a reflection on the representations and perceptions that Alsatia students have of their German language learning in the context of the Upper Rhine. After explaining the challenge of teaching and learning German in this cross-border context, we will present some significant quantitative and qualitative results in order to establish a sort of diagnosis of the decline in bilingualism observed by interregional institutions.

    W latach osiemdziesiątych dwudziestego wieku kibuce dotknął poważny kryzys gospodarczy i demograficzny, który zagroził ich dalszemu istnieniu w formie społeczności spółdzielczych. Rozwiązaniem było podjęcie kroków inspirowanych ideami wolnego rynku. Wzrostowi efektywności gospodarczej i przeorganizowaniu wspólnoty zgodnie z nowymi regułami towarzyszyły skutki w sferze politycznej, co widać w zmianie sposobu głosowania członków kibuców w wyborach do Knesetu. Główna teza artykułu głosi, że zorganizowanie społeczności kibuców według nowych zasad wprowadziło do nich nowy dyskurs społeczny, który całkowicie zmienił sposób, w jaki jednostka określa się w kategoriach społecznych i politycznych. Politycznym produktem ubocznym było to, że partie lewicowe, które w przeszłości stanowiły prototyp tożsamości socjalistycznej, zaczęły być postrzegane jako nieadekwatne wobec nowej tożsamości społecznej, w której nastąpił stały wzrost poparcia dla partii centrowych. W celu prześledzenia zmiany tożsamości politycznej, postanowiliśmy zbadać z bliska trzy kibuce znajdujące się na różnych etapach procesów zmian: kibuc Deganya A, kibuc Mizra i kibuc Ein Dor. Celem badań było nie tylko ustalenie, która grupa w kibucu zmieniła swoją tożsamość polityczną, ale przede wszystkim zbadanie, w jaki sposób przyczyniło się do tego zdobycie nowej wiedzy społecznej. Wyniki ujawniły duży rozziew w postrzeganiu rzeczywistości, głównie między dwiema grupami wiekowymi w kibucu. W przeciwieństwie do starszych, młodsze pokolenie zastosowało neoliberalne reprezentacje społeczne do zdefiniowania siebie, społeczności i systemu politycznego. Partie lewicowe, podobnie jak dawne kibuce, zaczęto postrzegać jako przestarzałe, nieskuteczne, a zatem niemające znaczenia w głosowaniu w wyborach do Knesetu.
    In the 1980s the kibbutzim suffered a severe economic and demographic crisis, which endangered the continuation of their existence as cooperative communities. The solution was to adopt steps, taken from the ideas of the free market. Beyond the increase of economic efficiency, the rearrangement of the community under new rules was accompanied by political influence, as can be seen in the change of the voting pattern of the kibbutzim members to the Knesset. The main argument is that the arrangement of kibbutz society under the new rules brought into the kibbutz a new social discourse that completely changed the way in which the individual defines himself in social and political terms. The political byproduct was that the Left parties that in the past served as a prototype for the socialist identity were perceived as not relevant to the new social identity, in favor of steadily increasing support for the center parties. To track the change in the political identity, we chose to examine from up close three kibbutzim found at different stages of the change processes: Kibbutz Deganya A, Kibbutz Mizra, and Kibbutz Ein Dor. The objective was not only to identify which group in the kibbutz changed its political identity but primarily, to examine how the penetration of the new social knowledge contributed to this. The findings revealed a large gap in the perception of reality primarily between two age groups in the kibbutz. Unlike the older generation, the younger employed neo-liberal social representations to define itself, the community, and the political system. The left parties, like the old kibbutz, were perceived as old, inefficient, and thus not relevant for it in the voting for the Knesset.

    This article provides the results of classroom research involving university students training to be secondary school teachers of geography and history. The research is based on the analysis of a word association test on Europe and the European Union. The results constitute an approach to the geographical and historical representations these students have of their own European continent. This is a fundamental question considering that this collective group is training to teach the contents and values of European geography in secondary school education. From here on, our intention is no other than to carry out an exercise of synthesis and overall reflection on the test results and introduce issues which could generate some debate in the educational community.

    In the undertaken study, the understanding of the concepts of citizenship and nationality by the Polish young people, I assume that these categories are essential in terms of shaping the national identity of the individual. The system of concepts that define the personality of a human, the ability to reflect on their content, correctness, common connection, allows individuals to unite into a certain community. Thus, the analysis of linguistic ways of describing non-linguistic reality is also associated with the description of the mental representations of the individual, and therefore the ways – in cognitive processes – to relate to the world, to make an image of the world, to create knowledge about the world.

    Le présent article prend en compte l’impact sur les représentations de l’espace historique et linguistique occitan de la création de la nouvelle région administrative Occitanie – Pyrénées, Méditerranée, issue en 2016 de la fusion des anciennes régions Midi-Pyrénées et Languedoc-Roussillon. Cette région ne correspond en effet que très partiellement à l’Occitanie linguistique historique, ce qui risque de délégitimer aussi le nom et même les pratiques de la langue – déjà, d’ailleurs, largement pulvérisées.
    Artykuł opisuje skutki powstania nowego regionu administracyjnego we Francji – Oksytanii, utworzonego w 2016 roku z połączenia dwóch wcześniej istniejących regionów: Midi-Pirenejów i Langwedocji-Roussillon. Region ten tylko częściowo pokrywa się z Oksytanią historyczną i językową, co może prowadzić do delegitymizacji zarówno nazwy regionu, jak i praktyk językowych, które już teraz są w dużym stopniu zagrożone.
