In this paper I intend to review some theories of the article, paying attention to the relations they establish between reference and +/–definiteness of a noun phrase (NP). The prototypes of +/–definiteness in Spanish are the definite and indefinite articles and NPs determined by them. Nevertheless, the actual reference of a NP depends mostly on its use (a speech act) and varies according to its pragmatic context. Reference and definiteness are mutually related concepts accompanied by pragmatic and semantic implications. I wish to make a critical overview of some proposals in this field of research.

Opis:
In this paper we present RefGen, a reference chains identification module for French. RefGen algorithm uses genre specific properties of reference chains and an accessibility measure to find the mentions of the referred entity. The module applies strong and weak constraints (lexical, morpho-syntactic, and semantic) to automatically identify coreference relations between referential expressions. We evaluate the results obtained by RefGen from a public reports corpus and we discuss the importance of the genre-dependent parameters to improve the reference chains identification.

The aim of the article is to rethink the way in which images convince us to adopt the perspective of another, which is the image itself. Starting from W.J.T. Mitchell’s theory on the desire and subjectivity of images, and Gottfried Boehm’s theory of the imagery, I look at a photographic and narrative album of Gerhard Richter and Alexander Kluge. This turns to itself for self-presentative and self-referential purposes. However, they do not aim to explore the essence of their medium, but “drag” the viewer into or out of the performance. I analyse situations in which we are forced to transfer our gaze to the materiality and objectivity of a picture, to its own existence. Such situations reinforce the effect of compassion, going far beyond literal meanings and content, which can be managed discursively.

This text analyses the Homek magazine published by Ruch Społeczeństwa Alternatywnego (RSA) [Alternative Society Movement] – a community of people with neoanarchist views first co-creating the underground Solidarność and later functioning independently. Homek, as an underground newspaper, was initially published bi-weekly, then monthly and later irregularly. This article focuses on, firstly, the RSA community’s position on hostile attitudes (including the so-called hate speech) and, secondly, on the use of the term walka [fight] as what we believe to have been a self-creation device.

The author attempts to reconstruct a short history of modern Polish literary studies not from the perspective of schools or methodological orientations that are usually applied, but from the perspective of what is known in sociology as cultural themes. This point of view offers the opportunity to (re)construct the process of continuity /discontinuity in the whole field of research focused on the problem of reference, which has been recognized as the most important one in Polish studies (as well as in Polish literature, and art) since its beginning in the first decade of the 20th century. In the broader scope the article attempts to rearticulate the definition of the discipline conventionally called “the theory of literature”, and to propose a new way of writing its history.

The article is an attempt to interpret The Five Obstructions, a film by Lars von Trier and Jørgen Leth that is a documentary record of a real meeting between the two directors, and of the project they undertook. According to plans, Leth was supposed to make five new versions of his film The Perfect Human from 1967. The result of Trier and Leth’s cooperation represents a hybrid of genres, difficult to classify by means of standard categories. Most of all, however, the film is self-referential, and therefore, the article discusses different aspects of documentary work in general, including the originality of a work of art, the issue of difference and repetition, the situation of the creator, and the concept and status of a work of art. Ultimately, the interpreted film provides a potential starting point for formulating a thesis on the documentary as a set of artistic conventions and rules for creatively engaging art and reality.

The aim of this paper is to define and to analyse the fantastic universe of short stories by Manuel Baixauli published in the volume Espiral (2010), an original and highly significant example of modern fantastic literature that has abolished the real and imaginary borders, that is to say a significant example of fantastic literature conceived as a language phenomenon. The conception of reality integrates and naturalises the supernatural and the irrational in a vision that joins multiple dimensions and perspectives of reality. The self-referential component is also of essential importance in this fantastic, which assimilates and exhibits themes and motifs of inherited traditions in a fully conscious way.Baixauli reflects on the ways of perception and representation of reality, in a proposal in which he combines elements that come from some forms of genre whithin the fantastic tradition. And he does it with full awareness of the linguistic and cultural condition of the referents he uses, exploring implicit meanings, metaphorical value, expectations they generate, etc. A literature that, from the point of view of fantastic literature, opts for hybridism and self-reference.

This review is a short presentation and an analysis of the book Кой, кога, къде в простарнното житие на св. Константин-Кирил (Vita Constantini: who, when, where) by Maya Ivanova and Tsvetomira Danova, published in 2021 in Sofia. The book consists of two main parts. The first and most extensive part is a kind of lexicon with 177 entries: personal name and by-names of actual historical figures; biblical and mythological characters; names of ethnonyms, tribes and languages; geographic names (including names of sacred objects), difficult and archaic words. Part II contains the text of the Vita. The book is a handbook intended for a wide groupof lay audiences, including Bulgarian Studies scholars abroad. This handbook is a coherent and well-thought-out entity. The study combines the condition of scientific credibility with the feature of accessibility. There is a need for similar teaching aids in the didactic process of students of Slavic studies.

Opis:
Contrary to what non-practitioners might expect, the systems of phonetic notation used by linguists are highly idiosyncratic. Not only do various linguistic subfields disagree on the specific symbols they use to denote the speech sounds of languages, but also in large databases of sound inventories considerable variation can be found. Inspired by recent efforts to link cross-linguistic data with help of reference catalogues (Glottolog, Concepticon) across different resources, we present initial efforts to link different phonetic notation systems to a catalogue of speech sounds. This is achieved with the help of a database accompanied by a software framework that uses a limited but easily extendable set of non-binary feature values to allow for quick and convenient registration of different transcription systems, while at the same time linking to additional datasets with restricted inventories. Linking different transcription systems enables us to conveniently translate between different phonetic transcription systems, while linking sounds to databases allows users quick access to various kinds of metadata, including feature values, statistics on phoneme inventories, and information on prosody and sound classes. In order to prove the feasibility of this enterprise, we supplement an initial version of our cross-linguistic database of phonetic transcription systems (CLTS), which currently registers five transcription systems and links to fifteen datasets, as well as a web application, which permits users to conveniently test the power of the automatic translation across transcription systems.

Opis:
Functionally-oriented linguistic theories, such as cognitive grammar (CG), offer nuanced descriptions of the meanings and uses of grammatical features. A simplified characterization of the semantics of the English active and passive voice grounded in CG terms and based on the reference point model is presented, as it is the basis of the instructional treatment offered to one of the groups in the quasiexperimental study reported in the paper. The study compares the effects of feature- focused grammatical instruction covering the form and meaning/use of the English voices based on CG with those of teaching based on standard pedagogical grammar rules. The results point to relatively high effectiveness of both instructional options in fostering the use of the target structures in both more controlled and more spontaneous performance, with traditional instruction being more successful than that based on CG with respect to the latter. A possible explanation of this superiority is that the subset of the participants (n = 27) exposed to the traditional explanations found them simple and easy to apply, contrary to the situation in the other group.

In this paper, I present Christine Korsgaard’s style of building a conception of animal rights protection based on a concept of Kantian provenance, namely “end in itself”. Considering that an end in itself in Immanuel Kant’s philosophy includes only human beings, the American philosopher needed to modify (extend) the meaning of the abovementioned concept. This study aims at showing this change of the meaning in categories derived from Fregean semantics (sense and reference). Moreover, I will attempt to prove that by broadening the extension of “end in itself” Korsgaard uses a strategy called ethical extensionism and situates the revised (naturalized) categorical imperative ipso facto within environmental ethics. I start with elucidating Korsgaard’s views on the meaning of “end in itself” before she took interest in animal rights (set out mainly in Kant’s Formula of Humanity and The Sources of Normativity) and then I synthetically describe her animal rights philosophy with a special regard to the category of “natural good”. The second part of the article explains the methodology used in the paper, while the last part is intended to be an interpretation of Korsgaard’s thought.

The urgency of this paper is conditioned by the importance for the Ukrainian literary process of examining the peculiarities of literary works devoted to the Russian-Ukrainian war (2014–?). In the article, the author reviews the genre status of Andriy Sova’s Zvit za serpen ‘14. The research indicates the syncretic character of Sova’s reportage and reconstructs the social and cultural conditions for the creation of the text. In addition, the author draws attention to the language of reportage (idiostyle), which is saturated not only with emotions, but also with technical and military terminology. It was found that Zvit za serpen ‘14 contains a specific chronotope conditioned by the dynamics of events in 2014. Another important aim of the research was to investigate how Sova strengthens the reference pact with the reader. As a result, it was recognized that Sova’s strategy is to declare the truth (“I am describing only what I have seen”), frequent quoting of other soldiers, as well as posting photos, which strengthens the documentary character of the book.
Актуальність цього дослідження зумовлена важливістю для українського літера-турного процесу вияву своєрідності літературних творів, що присвячені проблематиці росій-сько-української війни (2014–?). Мета наукової розвідки — здійснити аналіз жанру репортажу Андрія Сови (Плохіша) Звіт за серпень ‘14. Унаслідок здійсненого дослідження не лише з’я-совано тип жанру аналізованого тексту, що має гібридний, синкретичний характер, оскільки поєднує різні, часто гетерогенні жанрові ознаки, але й визначено специфіку суспільного та культурного контекстів, що призвели до його виникнення. Охарактеризовано систему ознак ідіостилю Андрія Сови (Плохіша), до яких належать: суб’єктивізм, емоційність, схильність до вживання професіоналізмів тощо. Крім того, розкрито структуру текстового хронотопу дослі-джуваного тексту, що зумовлена динамікою подій 2014 року. У розвідці виявлено й основну письменницьку стратегію, за допомогою якої відбувається “зміцнення” референційного пактуавтора із читачем; простежуємо наявність безпосередніх відавторських заяв декларативного характеру, як-от: “пишу лише те, що бачив”, розлогих прямих цитувань учасників боїв, залучення візуального ряду у вигляді фотографії, що ілюструє документальний характер видання.

The aim of the study is to show the possibilities of using corpus analyses for theintroduction of light verb constructions in German during foreign language lessons. The corpus analyses of three selected light verb constructions Maßnahmen ergreifen, einen Beschluss fassen and Bericht erstatten show the co-occurrence of these units and enable the creation of syntagmatic patterns and the allocation of individual light verb constructions to thematic areas. The results of the analysis confirm the thesis that syntagmatic patterns are an aid to learners of German, as they present their use in a sentence and show the partner words with their syntactic function. This method can present the context of use and the thematic area of the light verb constructions. The results of the analyses are also a guideline to placing the syntagmatic patterns in German-Polish dictionaries to help learners to use them and communicate with them correctly
