Opis:
A Hundred Years of the Project Method in PolandThe text presents the development of the project method in Polish education throughout the last century. The project method was introduced into Poland after regaining independence, and it was implemented during the inter-war period (1918–1939) in some schools, both in urban and rural environments. Nevertheless, the method was at that time treated as a pedagogical novelty andexperiment, rather than a natural part of school life. After 1945, education, like other aspects ofsocio-political life, was influenced by the communist propaganda, and the project method, supporting autonomy, democracy and empowerment, was not promoted as a valuable educational approach. After 1989, when progressive trends appeared in Polish schools, the project method gained somepopularity but it was not until 2008 when it was granted national and formal recognition. Then, the new core curriculum was developed, and the project method became an obligatory part of school reality. The revival of the project method was connected with the alarming findings concerning social capital in Poland. In this situation, making students cooperate within projects seemed aremedy for the decreasing social capital. As the author points out, formal introduction of the method does not necessarily mean its effective accomplishment, which should be accompanied by spontaneity and authentic engagement. What is more, as the author shows, after decades of theabsence of this method in Poland, and the lack of the relevant socio-cultural background, teachers might find it difficult to implement a project so as to contribute to the increase of social capital. All these areas need further investigation. Nevertheless, the author hopes that the text will contribute tobetter understanding of contemporary challenges and opportunities related to the implementation of the idea of projects in Polish education.

Opis:
In times of prevailing mass pop-culture there is almost no space for traditions and customs connected with folklore. Educationalists and music teachers continue to pursue progressive methods demonstrating the artistic values of folklore. Project-based learning is a method which can be the beginning of forming an attitude of respect and cultivation of national heritage. This method may not only can develop social abilities, teach self-reliance and organization, but also create an opportunity to find interest even among most difficult problematic issues. A recent project ‘Muzyczna Kawaleriada z Uśmiechem – Regiony kulturowe Polski’ has already created a possibility for researching if the above method can be applied for musical education for grades 4-6. Folk culture, especially songs and dances, has become a subject of observation for teachers and at the same time an evaluation for students. A questionnaire was used for that purpose. All three stages of the project, preparation, realization and presentation as well as the results of conducted research show that project-based learning is an attractive and effective method of music education. Certain values of the beauty of Polish folk songs and dances are also indicated.

The Story With No Punchline“To dance the silence” reveals the story of a documentary which could have been produced but it never was. The film was intended to present the world of silence trough three different characters working together ona dancing project – Caroline, Ann and Katherine. Caroline, 15, at that time, is outstanding ballet dancer. The dreams of her coach, Anna, is to train her so well so the girl will join the National Dance Theatre. But Caroline does not dream. For her – the future does not exist. As for the others who share her fate – the deaf people – who due to their deafness are deprived of abstract thinking. Catherine who is the costume designer of the dancing show “Other Worlds” has no such problem – even though she is deaf, she has learned how to speak and hear with the help of an hearing aid. She is a successful business woman with happy family. The idea of the film – and the article – was to explore Wittgenstein’s words “The borders of my language are the borders of my world”.

Opis:
In 2008 Chris Anderson wrote a provocative piece titled The End of Theory. The idea being that we no longer need to abstract and hypothesis; we simply need to let machines lead us to the patterns, trends, and relationships in social, economic, political, and environmental relationships. According to Anderson, the new availability of huge amounts of data offers a whole new way of understanding the world. Correlation supersedes causation, and science can advance even without coherent models and unified theories. But numbers, contrary to Anderson’s assertion, do not, in fact, speak for themselves. From the neuroscience’s standpoint, every choice we make is a reflection of an, often unstated, set of assumptions and hypotheses about what we want and expect from the data: no assertion, no prediction, no decision making is possible without an a priori opinion, without a project. Data-driven science essentially refers to the application of mathematics and technology on data to extract insights for problems, which are very clearly defined. In the real world, however, not all problems are such. To help solve them, one needs to understand and appreciate the context. The problem of landscape becomes, for this reason, critical and decisive. It requires an interdisciplinary approach consisting of several different competencies and skills.

In this paper, we are considering the social aspects of the object “Porta Macedonia” as a part of the project “Skopje 2014”, its political and cultural meanings, its symbolic aspects and its reflection on identity policies in contemporary Macedonia. We read buildings and monuments of “Skopje 2014” project as texts, interpret them as symbols recognizing as signs of multilayered ideas and interpretations of the nation under strong political patronage. The text shows how a monument in a very short period creates multiple layers of symbolism which, depending on social contexts, can be read in different ways.

The aim of the paper is to analyse an ongoing Polish-German project devoted to the Polish philologist Zygmunt Łempicki (1886–1943) and to present the potential, structure, risks and chances of this endeavour involving scholars from Heidelberg, Warsaw and Wroclaw. The Łempicki grant is a work in progress and the author attempts to present how it came to be, starting with the application for the grant, and continuing with the way the cooperation was initiated and the first meetings held, in order to finally present the perspectives for the project’s outcomes. The paper attempts to present its dynamics in order to guarantee a unique insight into the challenges the head of the project meets with. The perspectives for research into the history of German philology in Poland are illustrated and discussed on the example of the specific initiative carried out by means of a cooperation between numerous institutions from different countries.

The theme of the text is a new methodology of university education based on research and practice. I present formed eight years ago in the Department of Drama and Theatre Performances of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań specialization Interdisciplinary Curator Projects and crowning festival. At the same time I am outlining the broad context for the change in performing arts. Specialization is, on the one hand, a response to the need, expressed more and more by students and determined by the Bologna System, measures linking theory and practice in universities. On the other hand, is a reaction to the changes in performing arts that have created new jobs: theatre curator and producer.

The cult of a slim and beautiful body is no longer characteristic only for women. The male body is becoming more frequently subjected to the pressure of modelling. The use of different regimes increasingly intends to fulfil the requirements of attractiveness and physical perfection, also among men and boys. The discourse of disciplining the male body and its expectations also influence socially acceptable ways of performing gender. Employing a qualitative analysis of bodybuilding motivational films’ content, the author points out the key elements of the body project image in such materials. The possibility of identifying bodybuilders with experts in body modification, resulting from the specificity of the discipline, allows one to believe that the regimes and training tools presented by them can influence the perception of the body modelling process by men. The author presents four elements used to develop an image of the male body project – (1) conditions necessary for the project, (2) tools used in the project, (3) ways of controlling and evaluating the project, (4) side effects of the project. Based on them demonstrates how motivational bodybuilding films can affect changing ways of performing masculinity.

Scientific research and student education aimed at preparing students to practice their profession under the conditions of civilization and technological changes play a special role in geography teaching. It is important to be aware of the impact of key competences which are necessary for every person to function in the modern world and are needed for self-fulfilment, personal development, social integration, flexible adaptation to any changes and which determine the success in adult life. Proper development of such skills contributes to the correct interpretation of natural and socio-economic phenomena and processes. The aim of the article is to present and discuss research work and teaching activities pursued by the Department of Geography Didactics and Ecological Education at the Faculty of Geographical and Geological Sciences of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, aimed at the use by students of various educational concepts and the resulting key competences necessary for their future work. Students also have the opportunity to develop soft competences, such as communication, courage of expression, self-esteem or responsibility for the group, to which employers have paid special attention in recent years. Therefore, comprehensive preparation of the student requires the implementation of specific educational concepts. The most important ones include bilingual education; CLIL, inquiry based science education (IBSE), project method, fieldwork, geographical educational trails, participation, as well as the use of geoinformation technologies, GIS and ICT.

The joint teamwork of the whole class on the project helped them to enter the social life of the school, becoming a good plane of inclusion. However, according to the studies, the problem is the knowledge and awareness of possibility of applying this method by primary education teachers to support the school functioning of children with special educational needs including those with mild intellectual disabilities.

Much research supports the everyday therapeutic and deeper socialneurophysiological influence of singing songs alone and in groups (Austin, 2008; Cozolino, 2013; Sacks, 2007). This study looks at what happens when Japanese students teach short English affirmation songlet-routines to others out of the classroom (clandestine folk music therapy). I investigate 155 student-conducted musical case studies from 7 semester-long classes (18 to 29 students per class) over a 4-year period. The assignments, their in-class training, and their results are introduced, with examples directly from their case studies. Each class published their own booklet of case studies (a class publication, available to readers online for research replication and modeling). Results show that most primary participants enjoyed spreading these positive songlets as they became “well-becoming agents of change” in their own social networks. “Well-becoming” emphasizes an agentive action or activity that creates better well-being in others, an action such as the sharing or teaching of a songlet. The qualitative data reveals a number of types of well-becoming such as social and familial bonding, meaning-making, teaching-rushes, and experiencing embodied cognition. The project also stimulated wider network dissemination of these well-becoming possibilities and pedagogical insights.
