Opis:
Based upon web-published materials, the article analyzes the eulogies composed in the Church Slavonic and Ukrainian languages, which have arisen following Kiev’s Maidan and its subsequent developments in the period December 2013 – December 2014. The texts under analysis come from Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate and from the Patriarchate of Moscow itself, from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchate and some other texts. Initiatives from the laity are also taken in account (e.g. Ruslana Lyžyčko). The prayers under analysis show historical and political influences. In the Muscovite texts and in Patriarch Kirill’s statements, the attempt to impose the idea of a Russian Commonwealth (Russkij mir) is quite evident. This idea is based upon the unity and brotherhood of a people united by the christening of the Prince St. Vladimir. There are also charges brought against Greek Catholics and non-canonical Churches. The texts composed in Ukraine are either more decisively patriotic and anti-muscovite, with statements backing the European project (the Kiev Patriarchate Ukrainian Orthodox Church), or more religious in general terms, with a plea for fundamental Christian values and declarations of loyalty towards the State (the Moscow Patriarchate Ukrainian Orthodox Church).

Opis:
One of the important issues discussed in discourse texts of the radical Orthodox Church movement in Russia is the area of man’s sexual life, including the issue of homosexuality. In the studied texts, resources of nominations referring to sexual orientation and homosexual people are relatively small. The group of lexemes referring to homosexuality, mainly male, most numerously represented in the studied material and most diversified grammatically is the word-formation nest of words motivated by the proper noun Sodom (Содом). The elements of the word-formation nest with the stem содом- are usually used in the text because, due to their significantly axiological character, they make unnecessary the use of other strongly axiological units belonging already to lower stylistic registers. It is also not surprising that in the conservative and Orthodox Church circles the units of biblical origin prevail, and the richness of their forms definitely confirms their current importance in the studied discourse.

There is no single dominant religion with which most of the populace would iden-tify. The churches are largely regional in nature. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church - Kyiv Patriarchate, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church - Moscow Patriarchate, have become, for the politicians as well as for the people, the symbols of two “Ukrainian projects”. Their simultaneous functioning for almost twenty years, have become inter-twined in the process of formation of a political nation, which subsumes all identities of the post-Soviet territory of Ukraine. The fact that certain politicians equate the issue of belonging to a particular denomination with the problem of loyalty to one’s own state, obstructs the dialogue among orthodox churches and does not benefit social consolidation

Opis:
In Serbia, in the aftermath of 5 October 2000, the process of desecularization, including the revitalization of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC), overlapped with the democratization of its political institutions, as well as with the political and social pluralism. The desecularization of the Serbian society had already started in the socialist Yugoslavia, but the process itself intensified in the early period of political pluralism and establishment of the democratic political institutions. Is Orthodoxy compatible with democracy, viewed not only as the will of the majority or an election procedure, but also as a political culture of pluralism and rule of law? Is Orthodoxy possible as a “civic” church, in line with the European political tradition of democracy and pluralism? The author contends that the contemporary Orthodoxy, including the SOC, accepts globalization in its technical, technological and economic sense, with a parallel tendency towards cultural fragmentation. Thus one needs a consensus between the SOC, state and society in Serbia concerning the basic values, such as: democracy, civil society, pluralistic discourse, secular tolerance and individual human rights.

The aim of the article is to present the concept and actions taken by the Soviet diplomacy and the hierarchy of the Russian Orthodox Church to subjugate the Orthodox communities in the communist Balkan countries. The mechanism of the subjugation of the Balkan churches has been included into a comparative perspective and integrated into the broader concept of the Moscow Patriarchate towards gaining a leading role in the Orthodox world in the first years after the end of the Second World War. The process of dependency and its effects are reflected in diplomatic documents, but also in those produced by the Orthodox Churches themselves. The key element for gaining central position in the Orthodox world by Moscow was the organisation of anniversary celebrations and conferences to integrate the community and to involve it in the implementation of plans towards Soviet political domination. The results of these efforts were very limited in relation to ambitions outlined by the leadership of the Soviet state, revealing differing positions of the major patriarchates, as well as a real strength of authority and prestige that the Ecumenical Patriarchate invariably enjoyed.

The aim of the text is to show the position of the representatives of the Orthodox Church of Greece with a special attention dedicated to the Metropolitan of Thessalonica Anthimos. The extensive quotations from different statements by the Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church and the Metropolitan of Thessalonica (sermons, interviews, publications) are interpreted. The idea is to help the reader with no or a weak command of Greek language to show the background, shape and key concepts of Greek criticism regarding Macedonian issue. Moreover, the aim is to show the influence of sacral and secular sphere over the politics.

The article discusses 21 designations for Christian clergymen from Churches other than Catholic from the 16th century. They are general names of Orthodox and Protestant clergymen as well as the names of high-ranking priests and dignitaries of those Churches. The names mentioned have been excerpted from the published volumes of Słownik polszczyzny XVI wieku (“Dictionary of the 16thcentury Polish Language”). The article presents their origin and a consecutive history. What must be noted is quite big variety of the names of clergypersons of the denominations other than Catholic in the Polish language of the 16th century. Additionally, we can notice stability of those basic, most common designations. They are generally continued in contemporary Polish, not only in its specialist ecclesiastical variety.

Meletius Smotrytsky’s creative output is almost entirely of a polemical character, since this form and style of scholarly discourse was predominantly used in his times. This method of writing brought him both notoriety and fame. He is to be credited for permanently accommodating the developments of humanistic ideas in the early Baroque period. On the other hand, his changing ideological and religious attitudes, a phenomenon at that time widely regarded as completely natural, led to his recognition as a poet of historical-cultural idealism and religious self-awareness of the Russian people. For Smotrytsky, participation in the life of the Orthodox Church and the Kiev Catholic traditions was the basic principle of scholarly reflection. And owing to his influence this standard also defined the direction of polemical religious conceptions in the first half of the seventeenth century.

The article deals with the modification introduced by the Uniates to the Orthodox treatise Zercalo bogoslovii (1618), published in Pochaiv in 1790. The Uniate publishers created the Uniate roots of treatise, changed the language – a simple speech was replaced by the Russian Church Slavonic. Initial pages with the old title and preface to the reader were removed from the book, the title was rewritten, a new preface was written. The editors extended and corrected the content of the treatise, but they did not change the entire dogmatics – they did not add a chapter about the primacy of the Pope, and the dogma about the origin of the Holy Spirit was only partially changed in the spirit of Catholic theology, which sheds new light on the religious and cultural contacts between the Orthodox and the Uniates in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

This paper focuses mostly on the religious aspects of the Cossacks’ uprisings in the first half of 17th century (mainly the 1625, 1630, 1637 and 1638 uprisings), and discusses their impact on the origins, the course and following peace negotiations as well. The paper is based mostly on Cossack primary sources like manifestos, proclamations issued by the leaders, together with the directions which were to be followed during the peace talks, and the not Cossack sources as well. They prove how the religious aspects, namely the appeals to defend the persecuted orthodox confession, contributed to the character of the developments. Another question was, to what extent the religious engagement of the Cossacks uprisings at that time was caused by a sincere concern for the Orthodox Church situation, or perhaps there were other reasons, not having much in common with the faith. The analysis discusses also the Cossack delegates’ actions and policy on the Commonwealth Sejm in the years 1631–33, during which they firmly demanded restoration of the status the Orthodox Church had before 1596.

The article discusses the specific of sanctity of Parascheva of Tirnovo in the Russian Orthodox Church, an anchoress the most venerated by the Eastern Church. The pattern of holiness formed in the late nineteenth century is far richer and deeper than in other Slavic Orthodox churches. It is based on the Trinitarian, Christological, Marian themes, as well as on the strict hesychastic asceticism proper for hermits. The functions of the saint are also wider – she serves as a teacher, protector, defender, guardian of the state, the highest authorities (tsar) and the faithful – which is not typical for the sanctity of women, but rather for the holy hierarchs, bishops as pastors of the Church and the nation.

The dispute about the autocephaly of the Macedonian Orthodox Church (MOC), one of the questions within the discourse on the Macedonian national identity since 1967, gained new significance after 1991, as a consequence of the political emancipation of the Republic of Macedonia (RM). This issue is strongly associated with other concerns, such as the country’s internal integration and the struggle to strengthen its sovereignty. In order to support the MOC the authorities attempt to rally the ethnic Macedonians around the idea of national independence and diminish the influences of other Orthodox Churches on the followers of this denomination in RM. Year 2002 saw the failure of the religious consultation and an imminent schism within MOC. It prompted the authorities to act as a guarantor of the undivided jurisdiction of the MOC over the country’s entire territory. This course of action resulted in worsening of the relations with the neighboring Orthodox Christian countries, since the governments cooperate with their respective Churches to contest the independence of MOC. Moreover, since 2002 the issue of MOC’s status is frequently presented within the context of accusations against the RM’s authorities of breaching the civil and religious rights.

Opis:
The liturgical calendar used in the Orthodox Church in Romania dates back to the remote times of antiquity. The structure of the calendar was decisively formed in the period of Byzantium and its use was upheld by the tradition until the 20th century. The article describes the organization of the Orthodox calendar in Romania. It is divided into three cycles which designate the most significant holidays as well as customs and habits observed by the believers. The basic course is the daily cycle, which allows monks to live according to a specific rhythm determined by prayer, work and rest. It consists of seven prayers that fall at the same times of day and night. The weekly cycle includes seven days of the week starting with Sunday that is the first and at the same time the last day of the week on a symbolic level. Orthodox religion associates particular days of the week with remembering the mystery of faith, a saint or a group of saints. The liturgical week is an icon in the middle of which the Orthodox place Jesus Christ, thus it is often called a Weekly Passover. It symbolically invokes the history of salvation. The annual cycle is divided into the moveable and immoveable feasts (derived from Easter). The Orthodox Church appoints them according to the spiritual, not historical order. The spiritual order displays God’s plan to save humanity. This routine makes a full circle every year, with the same holidays placed along the course. A deliberate plan to destroy spiritual culture by communist authorities led to partial disappearance of Orthodox traditional customs or transformed them into a folk spectacle. The Communism has fallen and we can witness the resurrection of the Orthodox culture. There is a great return to the liturgical texts as well as to belles lettres created in the Byzantine time. Beside them, the old beliefs, habits and rituals molded in the Byzantine Christianity are slowly brought back to life.
