Opis:
The article proposes a new reading of Album biograficzne zasłużonych Polaków i Polek wieku XIX (1901–1903) [Biographic album of distinguished nineteenth-century Polish men and women (1901–1903)]. It is proven that this collection of characteristically designed biographies and an unusual collective biography is an important work of Polish humanities of the turn of the twentieth century that can be placed in relation to both Thomas Carlyle’s hero concept and Jacob Burckhardt’s postulates of the ‘anthropologisation of history’. The three selected biograms (Klaudyna Potocka’s by Aleksander Kraushar, August Hiacynt Dziarkowski’s by Józef Peszke and Adolf Pawiński’s by Jan Karol Kochanowski) are case studies allowing for the reconstruction of the dilemmas and text strategies each time specifying the biographer’s unique workshop and the techniques of uncovering it.

Opis:
Sabina Brzozowska’s monograph consists of a coherent collection of comparative and historical and literary studies of various artistic and ideological aspects found in selected works of Polish and European modernism. The author focuses on the dramas by Stanisław Wyspiański, Stanisław Przybyszewski, Tadeusz Rittner, Tadeusz Miciński and on the prose by Wacław Berent, Miciński and Thomas Mann. The interpretations of the works included in the monograph show a common area of European nineteenth-century culture, especially of the modernist period. Brzozowska’s reading experience focused on uncovering the intertextual and comparative relationships between, for instance, Wyspiański’s Wesele (The Wedding) and Mann’s Buddenbrooks, Berent’s Ozimina (Snow Crop) and Czarodziejska Góra (The Magic Mountain), Rittner and Ibsen. High art literature of the modernist period found its counterpoint in popular culture, including the new media. The author reconstructed this development dynamic of modernist culture in multiple versions.

The author focuses on their theoretical texts and artistic prose. The analysis indicates a strong multilateral involvement of the reflection on the topic of character in contemporary aesthetic views and anthropological concepts.

Opis:
The so-called faraglioni painting (Faraglioni-Landscape), painted in ca. 1837 by Carl Blechen (1798-1840) and held at the National Museum in Poznań is one of his most unusual achievements. What can be seen in the picture are rocks protrudingnear the shore of Capri, the so-called faraglioni – a characteristic motif of romantic painting. Still, Blechen was interested in more than just a mimetic representation ofthe rocks. Experimenting with extremely changing light, he intended to find the limits of visibility. Such attempts at playing with optical phenomena were typical for his works painted after his visit in Italy in 1829/1830. Examining color effects conditioned by changes of light was for Blechen a kind of necessity. It should be remembered that dioramas were particularly popular in that period. In Berlin they were shown, among others, by the Gropius brothers for whom, according to the records, Blechen was working. In dioramas, illumination from the back was just as obvious as presenting pictures in changing light. Blechen found the changing intensity of illumination interesting, which can be seen in his paintings.

This article concerns the book Prus. Śledztwo biograficzne [Prus. A biographical investigation] by Monika Piątkowska, a new biography of the nineteenth-century writer that enjoys great readership. However, it contains many superficial interpretations and simplifying applications. Piątkowska argues that in his stories and novels, Bolesław Prus included many autobiographical elements. This interpretation key fails. The schematic depiction of the psychological layer of literary works, the lack of references to previous studies of the work and life of Prus, disregarding the intellectual dimension of his biography – these are the most significant drawbacks of this book. The author of the review shows examples of the researcher’s simplifications and lack of competence.

The article’s aim is to present Bolesław Prus’s [Aleksander Głowacki’s] early literary endavours in the light of the reception of Hippolite Taine’s psychological studies at the turn of the sixties and seventies of the nineteenth century. The Author challenges the common conviction of the fact that Taine’s work has not been a strong point of reference for Prus before 1880 and shows how the strategies of gaining knowledge described by the French philosopher are reflected in the structure and peculiar fragments of Prus’s Warsaw sketches. The syncretism of those literary pieces, that join Prus’s column writing style with journalistic interventionism on the one hand and romantic musings of the literary wanderer, a figure at the core of the stories, on the other allows to show writer’s indecisiveness as a sign of positivistic doubt in approachableness of the nature of reality and of every singular experience.

The text presented here is a chapter from Jacques Rancièreʼs La nuit des proletaires, an extended version of the author’s doctoral thesis. It focuses upon prospects for workers emancipation following the unsuccessful revolutionary attempt of July 1830. Rancière does not comment on struggles of power and instead, emancipation is seen here mostly as an intervention into the aesthetic. Aesthetic identification, popular spectacles, grassroots press, the selection of readings and even the design of rooms are all presented as genuine tools of the emancipatory effort. Rancière shows that workers culture, although syncretic and full of calque, turned out to be subversive enough so as to undermine class divisions.

Opis:
The article attempts to reveal a reconstruction of Piotr Chmielowski’s critical thought regarding the poetical works written by Adam Asnyk (pen-name E...ly). The starting point for the discussion is a set of variations for different editions of Zarys literatury polskiej as well as other works of the critic elucidating the specificity, importance and the character of the poetry of E…ly. The article attempts to show why it was just the figure of the poet that was necessary and constituted a model figure for revealing the attempts of saving continuance of not only Polish poetry but also national culture and heritage. In his critical reflection, Chmielowski tries to find continuity between the Romantic paradigm and the post-January insurgency paradigm that was to define the obligations and the status of poetry, as well as to identify, uphold important question for Chmielowski himself as to why it was necessary to find among the generation of post-insurgency Poles a figure that would resemble Ignacy Kraszewski, a man-institution, and thus provide an exemplary model, necessary and much needed model figure in upholding and maintaining national consciousness and in preserving continuity. It is the culture and literature of the latter half of the nineteenth century that Chmielowski investigates in search of poetry and the poet as an icon of the nineteenth centuryness and modernity in the post-January insurgency non-poetical times. Asnyk can be seen, in Chmielowski’s terms, as an icon of the modern poet, a keystone figure who straddled the line between what can be consolidated and what was left to be saved in order to preserve the paradigm of Romantic poeticalness and the necessity for adjusting to new cultural circumstances and contemporary expectations on the part of receivers.

The aim of the article is to present the linguistic image of Polish scholars and research- ers whose profiles, biographies and obituaries were published in the Warsaw weekly newspaper Wędrowiec (Traveller) in the second half of the nineteenth century. Ana- lysing the collected texts, the author distinguished a set of seven aspects which were taken into account by the journalists of Wędrowiec to present the profiles of the schol- ars. Those aspects are the following: the subject of research, scientific achievements, journalistic and publishing activities, didactic and educational activities, science-pro- moting activities, organisational activities, awards and distinctions. They were deter- mined by the points of view adopted by the authors of the texts. There are three domi- nant points of view: the one of an expert, a Pole and a positivist. These points of view coexist and complement each other. The expert and specialist informed the reader in detail about the scientific career and achievements of the scholars. The Polish publi- cist expressed his joy at the international success of his countrymen. He observed their research and scientific achievements with attention; especially those that influenced the development of fields important for the country. The positivist and journalist noticed and emphasised the utilitarian dimension of the scientific and research activities of the scholars.

Opis:
A Diary of a Journey to Italy and Switzerland in 1815–1816 written by Rozalia Dunin-Borkowska is one of few preserved descriptions of a journey to Italy made by a Polish woman in the early 19th century. Rozalia and her husband Stanisław embarked on their expedition on 27 May 1815 in Lvov; they went to Italy and spent nine months there, from October 1815 to July 1816. The Italian tour started in Venice and included Padua, Bologna, Florence (twice), Rome, Naples, Milan and Geneva. The spouses spent the journey actively although their main goal was to learn about the culture of the Italian Peninsula. Undoubtedly, their time in Italy was filled with admiring the works of art and visiting the most famous art galleries in almost every city on the itinerary. Consequently, the journal is full of reflections on the aesthetic value of Italian works of art. Rozalia Dunin-Borkowska was an informed traveller: while she admired the sights and paintings, sculptures and other works of art, she did that in a thoughtful way. She needed quality time to form her own opinions. Her journal demonstrates very well that visiting foreign countries was an intellectually stimulating experience. Getting to know a new culture significantly broadened the horizons of 24-year-old Rozalia. As her journal suggests, she was well-prepared for her European journey. The outstanding lesson that she learnt allowed her to reap the rewards of the tour and satisfy her intellectual aspirations. The Diary is a great source of experience accumulated by a Polish traveller; it provides an opportunity to find out about Rozalia’s cultural life, her preparation for the journey and how the trip affected her. Furthermore, Dunin-Borkowska’s testimony was compared with Katarzyna Platerowa’s and Teofilia Morawska’s diaries due to the fact that all three of them shared certain common features. Namely, their cultural background, material status and, most importantly, the travel itinerary. They were all well prepared for their respective journeys; they were also well educated, fluent in foreign languages and, above all, they were curious about the world and interested in learning about a new culture. Each of these travellers was influenced by the European journey which provided educational values combined with unforgettable experiences.

Włodzimierz Pawluczuk opisuje grupę związaną z Prorokiem Ilją w perspektywie religioznawczej i antropologicznej. Obaj autorzy pokazują światy, które musiały odejść w niebyt, ale Pawluczuk widzi w nich rezerwuar wartości duchowych.
The article is an attempt of showing how two contemporary works which refer to the form of reportage depict the late 19th century experience of the multinational Austro-Hungarian Empire (Pollack). On the other hand, it shows how this loss is experienced by regular people on the eastern edges of the Romanov empire. Pollack takes a look at the inhabitants of former Galicia from a multicultural and civilisational development perspective. Pawluczuk describes the group formed around the prophet Ilja from the perspective of religious and anthropological studies. Both authors show worlds which had to go away, yet Pawluczuk sees it as a reservoir of spiritual values.

The article presents the life and educational activities of Blessed Marcelina Darowska, the co-founder of the Convent of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and her views on upbringing of young women. Mother Marcelina’s perception of education of girls in the 19th century seemed modern and beyond her time. In her opinion, there was a need of putting a stop to producing “parlour dolls” and provide young women with practical education. For the betterment of the country, she set up schools in Jazłowiec, Jarosław, Niżniów and Nowy Sącz. The girls attending the schools were brought up according to the system developed by Marcelina Darowska, based on religious and patriotic values. The Convent of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary continues the work commenced by its founder; over time Mother Marcelina’s message remains valid and serves the subsequent generations of young Polish girls.

Opis:
Poznańska „Książka wpisów wędrujących czeladników introligatorskich” jest dokumentem unikatowym i rejestruje działalność Stowarzyszenia Introligatorów w Poznaniu w drugiej połowie XIX wieku. Zawiera wiele wpisów niemieckich i polskich wędrujących czeladników, szukających w mieście zatrudnienia. „Książka” jest cennym i ważnym dowodem na istnienie bogatego życia rzemieślniczego z zakresu introligatorstwa w XIX-wiecznym Poznaniu.
From its inception bookbinding has been inseparably linked to science and arts, and closely connected with books, both hand-written and printed. Throughout centuries, thanks to favourable social and historical circumstances triggered by a constant growth in the number of various publications, bookbinders organized themselves in guilds. The guilds included master book binders, journeymen and young apprentices in the craft. During their 3-4 year long traineeship, apprentices learnt their trade and professional tricks of trade. On finishing the apprentice period they became journeymen. One of the stages in the development of their professional career involved, according to custom, traveling and offering their services. This, besides maintaining craft standards, was in intention to provide them with an exchange of experiences, which was to improve the level of craftsmanship in the country. Poznań “Register of the entries in the book of journeymen bookbinders” is a unique document and records the activity of the Association of Bookbinders in Poznań in the latter half of the nineteenth century. It includes many entries made by German and Polish journeymen looking for employment in the town. The “Book” is a valuable and important proof for the existence of a rich professional life of the then bookbinders in the town.
