Opis:
Sustainable mobility planning is a new approach to planning, and as such it requires new methods of public participation, data collection and data aggregation. In the article we present an overview of Public Participation GIS (PPGIS) methods with potential use in sustainable urban mobility planning. We present the methods using examples from two recent case studies conducted in Polish cities of Poznań and Łodź. Sustainable urban mobility planning is a cyclical process, and each stage has different data and participatory requirements. Consequently, we situate the PPGIS methods in appropriate stages of planning, based on potential benefits they may bring into the planning process. We discuss key issues related to participant recruitment and provide guidelines for planners interested in implementing methods presented in the paper. The article outlines future research directions stressing the need for systematic case study evaluation.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of the analysis of 25 biographical narrative interviews conducted between 2020–2021 with people from working-class backgrounds who, in the process of becoming academic workers, experienced the costs of cultural mobility. International literature suggests that upward mobility is not only a source of satisfaction or prestige but also suffering for academics from the unprivileged classes. Therefore, in our paper, we aim to answer two research questions: (1) what adaptation strategies do academics from the working-class use to deal with difficult experiences?, and (2) what resources do they mobilize at different stages of life (childhood, school years, the beginning of a research career) to implement these strategies? The analysis of empirical material allowed us to distinguish a number of practices that, in the long term, enabled the interviewees to develop an academic career, e.g., collaboration with “significant others” (of higher social positions), hiding deficits of a capital, context-dependent manifestation of various sets of cultural practices, or the rebellion against the rules and norms present in the family or academic environment. Based on these practices, we define six categories of adaptation strategies: “hacking the system”, “hyper-productivity”, “borrowing capital”, “class manoeuvring”, “indirect career path”, and “resistance”.

This article examines diverse travel narratives about steamship voyages to Asia in the first two decades after the opening of the Suez Canal, with special focus on journeys through the Suez Canal, Red Sea, and Indian Ocean. Sources include Polish, Serbian and Russian authors: Julian Fałat, Vlado Ivelić, Lucjan Jurkiewicz, Milan Jovanović, Vsevolod Krestovskiy, Karol Lanckoroński, Bronisław Piłsudski, Paweł Sapieha, Henryk Sienkiewicz, Ivan Yuvachev, Hugo Zapałowicz, and Ivan Zarubin. Given this variety of sources, consisting of 12 accounts in 3 languages, written by different types of travellers with dissimilar social backgrounds, it is possible to demonstrate a variety of phenomena that may be associated with steamship voyages. The two main issues examined here are: 1) the coexistence of multiple mobilities in the era of steam power, 2) different experiences of time while voyaging.

Black Death, global plague of the 14th century deeply changed the society of Medieval Europe. This unexpected catastrophe killed from 30 to 60 per cent of the continent’s population remaining the most deadly of all known wars, epidemics or natural disasters up to date1. It was an impulse to a profound transformation of European society, religiosity and art that opened doors for the Renaissance. Time of the catastrophe had a clearly liminal character, well described in Boccaccio’s Decameron. It is far too early to predict the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the world in long-time perspective, as we know little about how and when the disaster will end, but mechanisms of the liminal period are already to be seen and can be described, so is the influence of the virus on global economy, mobility, culture. There are similarities even in human reactions – from the hostility towards Asians (pogroms of Jews as a reaction to the Black Death) to ‘corona-parties’ (similar to the plays described by Boccaccio).

The paper presents results of qualitative research on PhD holders working at Polish universities, regarding their international mobility. The respondents’ opinions on mobility, their experiences of it (e.g. experiences of study visits), as well as obstacles, which prevented mobility were taken into consideration and analysed. Special attention was given to family issues (related to partners and children), language competences and working conditions. Declarations regarding mobility were compared to data on the respondents’ sources of income. For some of them the partner’s income was a primary means of livelihood. Therefore, we argue that demanding more mobility from the researchers may be counter-productive, since the mobility of the family could put the partner’s income at risk.

The study investigates the linguistic and cultural experiences of Erasmus+ students from Portugal at the University of Ostrava in the Czech Republic. Special attention is paid to the chal- lenges encountered by the students in both communication and coping with cultural differences, as well as to their language needs, ways of communicating, attitudes towards the Czech culture, and the role of English in communication. The research tool was a questionnaire covering a number of questions related to the purpose of the study. As the results show, while the intercultural experience was generally enriching and the participants appreciated some interesting aspects of the Czech culture, they were particularly disappointed by the limited number of Czechs able to speak English and some of the academic teachers’ low levels of language proficiency in English. In fact, this is not limited to the lack of language skills, as communication problems can also lead to the perception of the interlocutor as unpleasant and unhelpful.

Prezentowany tekst rozpoczyna się od krótkiego omówienia kilku wpływowych badań na temat mobilności pracy w ramach historycznego i współczesnego kapitalizmu. Później, opierając się na ustaleniach z ostatniej książki autora, Border as Method, or, the Multiplication of Labour (napisanej razem z Brettem Neilsonem), przechodzi do namysłu nad znaczeniem upowszechnienia się granic w epoce globalizacji z perspektywy „późnego” kapitalizmu. W ostatniej części autor skupia się na podmiotowym wymiarze polityki migracji, dostarczając w tym kontekście wielu przykładów z różnych części świata (w tym z regionu Pacyfiku).
The talk starts with a short discussion of some influential works on the mobility of labour in historical and contemporary capitalism. Drawing upon a book I recently published with Brett Neilson, Border as Method, or, the Multiplication of Labour, I then discuss the significance of the proliferation of borders in the global age from the point of view of “late” capitalism. In the last part of the talk I focus on the subjective stakes of the politics of migration, providing instances from many parts of the world (including the Asia-Pacific region).

In the current landscape of higher education in the UK, international students play a key role. It is an environment in which they not only cross borders physically but also transition through various identities as they develop their professional and linguistic confidence and skills to fully access and contribute to their programme of study and beyond. The aim of this paper is to outline the results of an empirical investigation into Chinese students’ perceptions of their study experiences in the context of student mobility and English-medium instruction in higher education. It reports on a study of two groups of Chinese students – one group studying in an English-speaking environment, the other in their home country where instruction is delivered through the medium of English. Semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted at each site which focused on the transition of “crossing borders” for educational purposes. The data was analysed using thematic analysis (Clarke & Braun, 2016). The main finding was that both groups experienced remarkably similar learning issues, despite being located in very different learning environments and crossing different types of borders.

The article recapitulates basic information on contemporary Polish international migrations. First, consecutive waves of migration of the 1980 are presented, followed by later developments of the late 1980s and 1990s of the twentieth century, up to the beginning of the twenty first century being a result of the political consequences of the enlargement of the EU (namely Poland’s joining the Europen Union and the subsequent Schengen agreement in 2004). After that certain ‘push factors’ occurring in Central and Eastern Europe are being described and the term: ‘individual factors’ is introduced. The main goal of the analysis presented in the article was to propose a possible strategy for answering questions regarding different intensiveness of the emigration from Central and Eastern European countries, bearing in mind that the quality of life in individual states – sources of that emigration – were comparable. In the analysis, available data from the Eurostat, government statistics, and sociological surveys were used.
Artykuł zbiera podstawowe informacje na temat zjawiska współczesnych polskich emigracji. We wprowadzającej części artykułu dokonano zestawienia kolejnych faz emigracji, po to by następnie zająć się interpretacją uwarunkowań i źródeł jej najnowszych fal po 2004 r. Na podstawie rekonceptualizcji podstawowych założeń XIX-wiecznej teorii migracji omówiono czynniki wypychające w Europie Środkowej i Wschodniej, aby wprowadzić pojęcie „czynników indywidualnych”.
