Opis:
The main features and tendencies in the formation and development of the modern media system in Ukraine after the collapse of the Soviet Union are examined in the article. In particular, the factors influencing the transition from the Soviet model of the press to the model of polarized pluralism are analyzed. The author also identifies the conditions necessary for the stable and progressive development of the media system to emerge in Ukraine, which include the development of public broadcasting, guaranteeing the independence of the media in various dimensions, the development of media pluralism, the strengthening of the mechanisms of self-regulation of the media, raising standards and increasing the diversity of forms of journalist education.

Opis:
The main question that the article poses is whether today there is still a possibility of media debate, for example on religion or the Church; or perhaps the system of mass media is governed by the logic of what Niklas Luhmann calls the thematic career. Mass media discuss various topics, but probably do not help to search for solutions for intra- and intersystem conflicts. According to Luhmann, mass media, politics, science and religion are autopoietic systems; they develop by their own rules. They are sensitive to external conditions, but primarily refer to what they have developed within themselves. Drawing upon Niklas Luhmann’s systems theory and using the analysis of the old debate (around Galileo), still without participation of mass media, and the current debate from 2012 when Richard Dawkins met Cardinal George Pell, I ask a question about its current shape. This is presented against the backdrop of the problem of how much the so-called synodality of the Catholic Church helps a given religion influence other social systems (such as science) and generally – social life. Why is it so difficult to fulfil the conditions of debate in the context of the three systems: religion (based on the example of the Catholic religion), media (mainly the Internet) and science? Perhaps it is because we deal with extremely different social systems which are mostly concerned with their own internal development. Moreover, the situation of reflection on the phe- nomenon of religion and social systems always becomes complicated by a specific global situation, both in the Church (e.g. synodality), and outside it (e.g. pandemic, war, new social movements).

Opis:
Niklas Luhmann (1927–1998) is one of the most distinguished sociologists of the twentieth cen-tury and the author of systems theory, which to a great extent has been accommodated into lin-guistics. Dietrich Schwanitz (1940–2004), an anglicist, is one of the most interesting interpreters of Luhmann on the basis of literary studies. Schwanitz is also known as a writer and author of the novel Campus (Der Campus, 1995). The main character, a sociologist, Hanno Hackmann, is wrongly accused of the sexual harassment and rape of a student. His reckless romance is exploited by various people in the university milieu to achieve their own goals. In fact, these people are, however, only the representatives of various social systems, especially politics and the media. Striving for re-election, the university rector needs this matter for his campaign, and the media are only interested in a scandalous story to be exploited for some time. Social communication does not reflect reality, and, at the same time, can be described as based on the “reduction of complexi-ty” (“Komplexitätsreduktion”). This is one of the most important concepts in Niklas Luhmann’s work. It turns out that systems theory provides the specific key to interpret the novel.
