    The article presents the role of Zofia Nałkowska in inter-war Polish literary culture. Her activity in the structures of literary life was combined with personal commitment to promotion of young talented authors. While she maintained close bonds with the political elites of the Polish Republic, she also functioned above the ideological divisions, actively supporting authors who were opposed the state. As the only woman she was member of the Polish Academy of Literature. Her participation in the official forms of public life forced her to spend time mostly in male company. At the same time, Nałkowska’s most important relationships, both with women and men, developed in private space.

    The article presents an unofficial discussion that took place between one of the most prominent Polish critics of the late 19th century and Antoni Lange, a raising poet of the 90s, whose work had gained little attention from the older colleague. Mentioned briefly in Chmielowski’s Współczesni poeci polscy in 1895, Lange responded to some of the critic’s fterwards. Chmielowski did not respond to that directly, however, his review of Lange’s volume of poetry published at the time and the will to defend his claims using the adversary’s poetry as a pretext shows that the young poet had succeeded in provoking the respected critic to take defensive position. The two writers, discussing an ongoing ‘crisis’ of poetry, present their own perspectives on the roots of the situation. Chmielowski’s claims from the beginning of the 20th century prove that the dispute, unofficial as it was, was won by Antoni Lange.

    Opis:
    The article concerns the relationships between terms, frequent in Polish literary criticism, such as “women’s literature”, “women’s press”, “women’s writing”, “literature written by women” and ”Feminist literature”. The author discusses three research books that have been published recently in which slightly different categories have been applied and which, at the same time, focus on the female element of cultural texts. In addition, the author points at multiple tendencies, frequently dissimilar and distinct, in the approach to the relationship between gender and the text. At the same time the author emphasizes a certain disposition manifested by researchers to employ the gender category to judge literary works. Hence, it seems to be quite justified to reopen the Jy women to show them in a new light. The same applies to the surrounding discussions on relevant titles — just as it is the case with publications by Joanna Krajewska, Jerzy Strzelczyk and Kamilla Łozowska-Marcinkowska.

    The subject of the article is a pioneering in Poland critical conception of the fantastic developed by highly esteemed prewar author of the fantastic literature, Stefan Grabiński. The crucial, remarkable comments referring to fantastic literature were comprised by Grabiński in his extensive essay entitled On fantastic literature. The dissertation in question was never published in whole, however, to find its issue while his life in merely two short parts of it in press edition. In the first part of the article the archival documents were used (mainly the letters) which enabled the reconstruction of puzzling history of the manuscript of said essay now probably lost forever. In the second part, basing on the published parts of the essay, as well as other critical statements of the Polish writer, the main aspects of Grabiński’s theory were discussed. Upon the profound analyses made therefrom it appeares that Grabiński perceived and gave the fantastic genre a unique meaning and value, notably owing to its specific privileged language exposing metaphysical expression of the Mystery. The writer managed to depict in accurate, innovative and convincing way the character of fantastic literature, both in terms of historical and anthropological origin of this kind of literary creativity, and its aesthetics, social and philosophical attributes what makes these researchers innovative and even anticipativewith reference to the corresponding studies of postwar literature theoreticians of fantastic genre (e.g. L. Vax, R. Caillois, T. Todorov). Discursive statements on the issue of fantastic literature of Grabiński are further related to much wider phenomenon which was focused on developing critical analysis of fantastic literature in Poland in the first decades of the twentieth century.

    Celem artykułu jest prezentacja spuścizny Stefana Balickiego (1899–1939) oraz perspektyw badawczych, jakie otwierają materiały źródłowe tworzące zbiór. Archiwalia literackie i biograficzne dokumentujące życie i twórczą aktywność poznańskiego pisarza i pedagoga pochodzą z rodzinnych zbiorów autora Chłopców, które zostały przekazane Bibliotece Raczyńskich w 2003 roku. W spuściźnie Balickiego szczególne miejsce zajmują rękopiśmienne bruliony z wierszami i dzienniki, prowadzone w latach szkolnych oraz w okresie działań wojennych, przed osiedleniem się pisarza w Poznaniu. Archiwalia te stanowią zarazem ważny przyczynek do badań nad początkami twórczości Balickiego, naznaczonej intensywną pracą poetycką, którą pisarz niemal zupełnie porzucił w okresie dojrzałej aktywności literackiej. Bruliony zawierają autografy kilkuset tekstów poetyckich powstałych w latach 1916–1922, w ogromnej większości nieopublikowanych. Ważnym dokumentem pracy zawodowej są nadto dzienniki prowadzone przez Balickiego – pedagoga, nauczyciela poznańskiego Prywatnego Gimnazjum Humanistycznego im. A. Mickiewicza. Spuścizna, do tej pory w niewielkim stopniu dostępna badaczom biografii i twórczości Balickiego, jest też ważnym dopełnieniem archiwaliów dotyczących pisarza, zgromadzonych w innych polskich bibliotekach i ośrodkach dokumentacyjnych.
    This article discusses the literary and critical output of Stefan Balicki (1899–1939) as well as rich research perspectives offered by examining the source materials available in the collection. Literary and biographical archival materials that document the life and artistic work of the Poznań-based writer and educationalist come from the family archives that were handed over to the Raczyński Municipal Public Library in 2003. Hand-written notebooks with his own poems and diaries kept in his school years and then during the war, but before Balicki settled down in Poznań, have a particular place in Balicki’s literary and cultural legacy. Collectively, the archival materials constitute a disparate yet fascinating corpus of biographical, literary and critical fragments, and at the same time are an important contribution to investigations into the beginnings of literary works of Balicki, especially those that were charactersied by intense poetic endeavors soon to be almost completely abandoned by the writer in his mature years of literary activity. The notebooks include autographs of a couple of hundreds of poetic texts, largely unpublished, that originated between 1916 and 1922. Another important documents in Balicki’s professional work are his diaries kept by the Balicki-educationalist and teacher of the private A. Mickiewicz Gymnasium in Poznań. These materials, still awaiting to be properly scientifically addressed by biographers and researchers, are a valuable complement to the archival material concerning the writer currently available in other libraries and documentation centers in Poland.
