On books and letters in David Jones’ 84 Charing Cross Road (1987)]. „Przestrzenie Teorii” 32. Poznań 2019, Adam Mickiewicz University Press, pp. 93–114. ISSN 1644-6763. DOI 10.14746/pt.2019.32.4. 84 Charing Cross Road (1987, dir. by David Jones) is the story of 20-year-long (1949–1969) correspondence between the American writer Helene Hanff and London antiquarian Frank Doel. The letters (edited and prepared for printing by Hanff) were published under the same title in 1970. This article is a precise analysis of the film work, particularly in the context of the two most important elements of its narrative and semantic plane (excluding the strictly historical introductory part). The first is a letter, understood mainly in its artistic function, the second, a book, both as a material object and a medium of literary content. Treating the epistolary material with ingenuity worthy of respect, the filmmakers managed to create one of the most convincing images of literary culture in the history of cinema, albeit one rather forgotten nowadays.

    This paper synthesizes relations between Polish democratic system and literary practice in the 16th century. The paper analyses phenomena that project social practice of deliberation on what is important to the community, including political community, and are rooted in the idea of noble democracy – idiosyncratic, mixed political system. The author focuses her interest on the idea of concordia. Consensualism was achieved through debates, political disputes or agons. Deliberative culture also encouraged other distinctive literary forms such as dialogs (political dialogs), polemical treatises, speeches or political satires.The paper underlines the significance of the Protestant Reformation to the Polish Renaissance culture, which introduced modernising tendencies and which expressed the ambitions of influence, participation, public activity, and co-deciding about the community. It stimulated modern way of thinking and shaped the model of discursive society and democratic Church.

    A review of the book entitled Literature – new media. Homo irretitus in the literary culture of the 20th and 21st centuries (Literatura – nowe media.     This study examines the changes within Czech literary culture since 2000 in relation to the process of remediation. The starting methodological point is in examining a structure of a literary system within a model proposed by Siegfried J. Schmidt. The impact of new creative approaches which utilise interactive network media and also of available publishing platforms are observed in terms of the increase in the size of the literary active group of the population. The study further investigates publishing options via the Internet used mainly by amateur authors, complementary phenomena in print production, as well as the impact of these innovative forms on the dynamics of the book market. The ways in which texts are received are examined particularly from the point of enhancing the role of the reader within interactive media and attention is paid to the qualitative changes within the reception frameworks (transnational and non-literary contexts). And finally, the ways in which literary phenomena are handled is largely related to the reflection of the critical state of the current literary criticism and new virtual formats of critiquing literature. The study shows that the evolutionary changes which were brought about by extending the use of digital media within literary communication have been so extensive that the Schmidt model of analysis has proven insufficient.
    Studium poświęcone jest zmianom następującym w czeskiej kulturze literackiej po 2000 r. i związanym z rozwojem mediów internetowych. Metodologiczny punkt wyjścia stanowi analiza modelu systemu literackiego o strukturze zaproponowanej przez Siegfrieda J. Schmidta. Zwrócono uwagę na nowe metody twórcze, posługujące się specyficznymi możliwościami interaktywnych mediów sieciowych, oraz wpływ publicznie dostępnych portali wydawniczych na wzrost aktywności literackiej części populacji. W tekście analizowane są zarówno możliwości publikacji w sieci internetowej, wykorzystywane głównie przez pisarzy amatorów, jak również komplementarne zjawiska występujące w produkcji drukowanej oraz wpływ innowacji na dynamikę rynku książki. Procesy recepcji rozpatrywane są przede wszystkim w związku ze wzrostem znaczenia roli czytelnika w mediach interaktywnych, a szczególną uwagę poświęca się jakościowej zmianie ram recepcji (ponadnarodowa i pozaliteracka kontekstualizacja). Podejście do zjawisk literackich jest w dużej mierze związane z refleksją nad złym stanem współczesnej krytyki literackiej i nowych, wirtualnych form oceniania literatury. Artykuł zawiera konkluzję, że zmiana ewolucyjna, którą ze sobą niesie rozpowszechnienie się mediów cyfrowych w komunikacji literackiej, była tak zasadnicza, iż Schmidtowski model systemu literackiego okazał się niewystarczający do jej opisu.

    Artykuł jest próbą przyjrzenia się miejscu spotkania: kina dokumentalnego i kultury literackiej, pojmowanej tu w kontekście „zdarzeniowości” i jej dwóch konkretnych przejawów, czyli poetyckiego slamu i spotkania autorskiego. Rozważając to zagadnienie, trudno poprzestać na wniosku, iż dokumentalna kamera, towarzysząc slamowej rywalizacji lub spotkaniu z pisarzem, musi ograniczyć swój udział wyłącznie do nieskomplikowanej funkcji archiwizacyjnej. Analiza wybranych przykładów (warto od razu dodać – katalog filmowych tytułów, uosabiających sformułowane rozpoznania, nie jest bogaty) dowodzi, że wspomniany „styk” zawiera w sobie potencjał znacznie szerszy: dokument potrafi skutecznie uchwycić choćby unikalną dramaturgię zdarzenia, jego semantykę wpisaną nie tylko w słowo, ale i obraz, kryje on w sobie też niemałe możliwości interpretacyjne. Innymi słowy, jeśli ujmować filmowy dokumentalizm jako „dodatek” do literackiego zdarzenia, to tylko ze świadomością tych nie zawsze oczywistych, lecz istotnych znaczeniowo implikacji.
    The article attempts to examine the meeting-point of documentary film and literary culture, understood here in the context of the “event” and its two concrete manifestations, i.e., the poetry slam and the public meeting with an author. In considering this problem, it is difficult to accept the conclusion that the documentary film camera, in following the competition at a slam or the meeting with the author, must limit its participation exclusively to a simple archival function. An analysis of chosen examples (it should also be immediately clarified that the list of film titles embodying the diagnosis here formulated is not extensive) shows that the “encounter” in question contains much broader potential: a documentary can, if nothing else, effectively capture the unique dramaturgy of the event, its semantics as inscribed not only in the word, but also in the image, and conceals within itself great interpretative possibilities. In other words, if we treat film documentarianism as an “addition” to the literary event, we can do so only with an awareness of these implications, which are not always obvious but are certainly significatively relevant.

    This article examines the concept of Byzantinism that Julien Benda employed in his book La France Byzantine. In the fin-de-siècle European sensibility, Byzantinism was transferred from political to literary level, but Benda created an epistemological break when he asserted in his book that Byzantinism is literature in its normal function. Furthermore, of Byzantinist character is especially the modern literature (e.g. Valéry or Mallarmé). Thus, labeling modern literati as Byzantinist writers served as a critical tool for Benda, who condemned the degradation of modern intellectuals into clerks. This transformation of literary normality affected also pure thought as is manifested in the ambiguous manner of expressing their ideas by modern thinkers (this being a mixture of idealism and apocryphal thinking, which renders ideas rather abstractions than instruments of rationality). An example of such a Byzantinist use can be found in the manner Emmanuel Levinas exploited Husserl’s phenomenology. Finally, Benda engaged in a discussion with Paulhan’s view that literary philosophy is a form of critical terror. The position of Benda is that of a rationalist, whereas Paulhan is a thinker who focuses on the use of language. For Constantine Tsatsos (1899–1987), on the other hand, a Greek philosopher and author of a philosophical novel entitled Dialogues in a Monastery (1974), the Byzantine moment is a part of great continuity of Greek culture, which is characterized by various structures in its period of long duration. One of these is the synthesis of Hellenism and Christianity that can be seen in Byzantium, where the transposition of the philosophical (Platonic) Eros to the mystical one plays a major role. This development is of paramount importance not only for the whole European culture but also for all questions of beauty and morality. The present paper concludes with a brief discussion of Richard Rorty’s account of pragmatic reason, which makes it possible to show how contemporary philosophy can be placed in the context of the debate about Byzantinism.

    This is a review of Lwowska krytyka literacka 1894-1914. Tendencje i problemy by Katarzyna Sadkowska, an attempted monograph of the most outstanding and most representative literary criticism phenomena observed in modernist Lvov at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The book offers a dominant interpretation strategy typical of the cultural history of literature, presenting the analysed texts in the context of diverse relations. The monograph focuses on the achievements of Ostap Ortwin, Karol Irzykowski, Stanisław Womela and Tadeusz Sobolewski. The author has reconstructed many formerly unknown segments of modernist literary criticism in Lvov.

    This paper outlines the main reading strategies of ecocriticism. Its main theoretical interest lies not in the pure extraction of literary motifs of Nature, but in the deconstruction of the diversity between Nature and Culture, representing Nature as the postmodern significant “Other” relating to contemporary environmental problems and thus exposing literary approaches in the past ( includingpostmodernism ) as anthropocentric. The main part of this paper focuses on the example of the application of ecocritical strategies in Đuro Sudeta’s modernist and impressionistic novella Mor, which leads to the suggestion of reforming conventional readings in traditional literary history.

    W powstałej po kryzysie uchodźczym perspektywie - koniecznej edukacyjnie - społecznej (nie)obcości przywołuję ideę i przebieg przeprowadzonej w II Liceum Ogólnokształcącym w Chojnicach lekcji akademickiej. Na szerszym tle pogromów (i przemocy społecznej) i w węższym kontekście pogromu kieleckiego porównano podczas tej lekcji trzy wiersze: Pieśń o zabiciu Andrzeja Tęczyńskiego [anonim, k. w. XV], należącą do szkolnego kanonu tekstów poetyckich średniowiecza; Pieśń o zabiciu „Nurta Nowego”[„Arkusz” 1996, nr 11] – współczesny żart literacki i środowiskowy, oparty na parafrazie tekstu kanonicznego; Juliana Kornhausera Wiersz o zabiciu doktora Kahane [z cyklu Żydowska piosenka, z tomu Kamyk i cień, 1996] – odnoszący się bezpośrednio tematycznie do pogromu kieleckiego (4 lipca 1946) i będący aluzją literacką do pieśni średniowiecznej. Ramą kompozycyjną tekstu uczyniłam wiersze empatyczne Anny Szumańskiej z 28 lipca 1946 roku (bezpośrednia reakcja na pogrom kielecki) oraz współczesny, „interwencyjny” wiersz Piotra Mitznera pt. Obraz (z tomu Siostra, 2019).
    In a perspective resulted after a refugee crisis – necessary in education – social (un)foreignness, I summon an idea and a course of a academic lesson carried out in II secondary school in Chojnice. On a wider background pogroms (and social violence) and in a narrower context of pogrom in Kielce a three poems were compared during this lesson: Pieśń o zabiciu Andrzeja Tęczyńskiego [anonymous, end of 15th century], which belongs to school canon of medieval poems; Pieśń o zabiciu „Nurta Nowego”[„Arkusz” 1996, nr 11] – current literary and environmental joke which is based on a paraphrase on a canonical text; Julian Kornhauser’s Wiersz o zabiciu doktora Kahane [from the cycle Żydowska piosenka, from the book of poetry Kamyk i cień, 1996] – directly referring to the pogrom in Kielce (4th July, 1946) and being a literary allusion to medieval song. I made the Anna Szumańska’s emphatic  poems from 28th July, 1946 (a direct reaction for the pogrom in Kielce) and a current “interventional” poem by Piotr Mitzner entitled Obraz (from the book of poetry Siostra, 2019) the compositional frame of my article.

    This paper focuses on the influence of the semiotic organization of the digital message on the creation of aesthetic meanings in digital art. It presents  modifications in the sphere of text presen-tation and focuses on functions that it play in creation of literary meanings. Moving, sound created, changing shape and color texture is the place of creation of meanings as well as the inter- action of the semantic of the texture and the semantic of words. New digital tools, e.g. program-ming, the interface are important part of new semiotic code that shapes literature (e.g. linking facilitates the creation of new forms of plots, the interface is a part of literary discourse, the cursor is both the medium of meanings and the tool of text working). The paper concludes that digital technologies redefine the ontology of the literary text and art discourse.

Autor w interpretacji wykorzystuje pojęcia praktykowania postpamięci w ujęciu Marianne Hirsch, stylu literackiego Marielle Macé i „opowieści przestrzennych” Michela de Certeau. Tekst stara się prześledzić zmiany zachodzące w podróżniku i reportażyście ze względu na kontakt z konkretną przestrzenią geograficzną.
    This article explores Ziemowit Szczerek’s work of reportage, Mordor’s Coming to Eat Us: A Secret History of the Slavs. In his analysis, the author applies Marianne Hirsch’s conception of post-memory practices, Marielle Macé’s conception of literary style, and Michel de Certeau’s “spatial stories.” This text attempts to map the traveler and reporter’s transformations prompted by contact with actual geographical space.

    Opis:
    Following the iceberg model of culture, the present study offers a view of a poetic text and its translations as the tips of cultural-linguistic icebergs. This assigns to the translator the task of navigating the meanders of the source and target languages as well as diving below the surface of words. This thesis is exemplified by an analysis of English translations of Wisława Szymborska’s poem Rozmowa z kamieniem with its keyword kamień and its underlying cultural-linguistic foundations, supported by the concept of linguistic worldview. Hopefully, in this framework the human factor in translation still is, and will always be, irreplaceable.
    Opierając się na modelu kultury jako góry lodowej, niniejszy artykuł proponuje spojrzenie na tekst poetycki i jego przekłady jako wierzchołki kulturowo-językowych gór lodowych, gdzie zadaniem tłumacza jest nawigacja poprzez meandry języków: źródłowego i docelowego, i zanurzanie się pod powierzchnię słów. Przykładem jestanaliza angielskich przekładów wiersza Wisławy Szymborskiej pt. Rozmowa z kamieniem wraz ze słowem-kluczem kamień i jego kulturowo-językową bazą. Narzędziem analizy jest pojęcie językowego obrazu świata. Autorka wyraża nadzieję, że w takim ujęciu czynnik ludzki w przekładzie wciąż jest i zawsze pozostanie niezastąpiony.

    Opis:
    During the times of Dositej Obradović (1739–1811), i.e. the period of Enlightenment in Serbia, advanced ideas were best spread through literature and the translation of contemporary authors was very common in Serbian literature. Obradović was the first to point out the importance of translation to the Serbs. He advocated the development of literature and culture modelled after more advanced cultures and based on the translation of useful works; he also believed that translation must adapt to the nature of target language. His views particularly influenced same writers from the region of Croatia, namely Pavle Solarić and Jovan Došenović, who were friends also. Solarić translated philosophical, geographical, historical and other documents, while Došenović, under the influence of others, compiled an arithmetic book, as well as the first collection of lyric poetry in recent Serbian literature, with the use of the imitatio procedure too. Translation influenced the genre, subject, style, and especially the linguistic development of Serbian literature.

    Opis:
    Among the people who created the ambiance of the Poznań literary life in the interwar period were priests-men of letters, such as the poet Ewaryst Nawrowski, the authors of reportages and memoirs - Nikodem Cieszyński, Ignacy Posadzy, Józef Kłos. An important part was played by priests-men of learning linked to the University of Poznań and the Poznań Seminary who presented their works at sessions of the Poznań Society of Friends of Sciences but also gave talks to more general audiences during events held both by Church and lay organizations. This group included among other such priests as Bronisław Gładysz, Kazimierz Kowalski, Władysław Hozakowski, Edward Warmiński. The Church culture forming center was the St. Adalbert Booksellers, an important publisher of Polish and world literature, which also published a cultural journal for the intelligentsia called “Tęcza”. Another such center was the Principal Institute of Catholic Action, publisher of the “Kultura” weekly, one of the leading journals of this profile in Poland.
